I'm by no means a professional captain or anything, but I do spend a ton of time on my boat...these videos make me feel so much better about my level of skill. They're hilarious and some people should just stay off the water...
Two of the most common loading mistakes is not knowing the sweet spot depth for your trailer and boat combo. Keeping the runners at the perfect depth will help the boat center itself on the trailer even if you come in a bit sideways and when approaching the trailer not reacting quick enough to counter the stern drift. Too many people want to steer a boat like a car. Not going to work. The #1 main mistake people make is putting the trailer in too deep as Dan has pointed out here😊
@bonniejosavland3227 I took my truck out and rented a haul to teach my wife how to back up properly? DBD Don't be dumb. It didn't work and divorce was a close first. 🙃
All you have to do is watch your back tires are when you reach that certain spot just put it in the same spot/distance in our out of the water . Plus I watch for it to start to float when I’m backing it in .
I was watching an upload the other day, and my husband joined in, we were giggling like kids, we used to have a boat, but after one too many fusses, him idling at 60 mph me a chill wife, that doesn’t need to be yelled at to help properly, , he would even yell at friends when they went out 😂😂couldn’t take it anymore😂😂, my ideal day is not to fight at the end of a glorious morning/afternoon in Florida, he sold the boat, I think it was smart, thank you for capturing, some of the most awesome meltdowns, whoops moments, etc., shout out to your wife, you said you were looking into purchasing a boat, might it be everything & more, can’t wait to see👍🏻👍🏻✌🏻💕
Ohhhh he doesn’t own a boat???? Hmmmmm but I bet he’s in the excellent at it all category. 😉 You’re correct when describing some boating days. You come back tired, could have had weather etc etc etc and the boat ramp can test the strongest relationship.
Hello from Germany. Here we need a licence for boats with more then 15HP. IWM (inland waters; motorized craft) and CWM (Coastalwaters motorized craft). When I see this guys I really think this is a good thing. Even when trailering isn't part of the test but docking on the jetty and the general handling is.
I agree but unsafe people will still make it behind the helm. Stupid is sneaky. All you can do is be as aware, educated and experienced as possible. The actions of others are beyond our control.
Agreed! And its not just boater education that needs to be addressed. Add to it Trailering a boat. I live in South Carolina and have a 27’ boat which I use on Lake Murray and the coast. I’ve been boating for decades and have seen it all. I’m talking about the people hauling boats at 80 mph on the highway. No safety chains. Boats to far aft on the trailer so its swaying. No transom straps. I was in the construction equipment business so hauling equipment was a daily occurrence. It only takes a second for a locking pin on a trailer hitch to be over looked. A 2’ ball being used when a 2 5/16 is the proper size… Trailer bearings not being maintained.. Dry rotted tires.. And the typical no trailer lights. All these issues can result in a catastrophic event…
I'm a new boater and in AZ they don't require a class. I took it regardless. 20 bucks, 6 hrs. Saving money on insurance even. What's crazy also AZ doesnt require insurance either
What is wrong with these men that can’t put the boat between the two white markers!! WOW!! I grew up in the South and you would be hard pressed to find a man that couldn’t drive a truck and trailer anything. These must be transplants!!
Don’t worry about embarrassing yourself since everyone on the docks or ramp, if they have ever launched or retrieved a boat, have embarrassed themselves. Just learn from Big Dan’s videos.
My #1 rule with my wife (or anyone else with me) is to NEVER stand between the boat and the truck while either are moving. After watching these videos I can't help but wonder how many people are injured between boats and trucks.
Agreed.. You’re a common sense guy!!! Back in the 1990’s on Lake Murray SC, a group of people were swimming with their boats rafted up off an island. A guy fired up his twin engine boat.. He didn’t check at all to see who was near him and literally backed the boat into a lady. It was just horrific. Obviously her injuries were awful. If memory serves she survived and healed up…We swim off our boat all the time and constantly monitor who and what is closing on us.

Good heavens! I can’t believe that these people put their trailers in so deep. When are they going to learn that you can’t float a boat onto a trailer.
My wife wanted to learn and asked me to teach her how to back the trailer down the boat ramp so she can help out. She picked it up faster than a lot of men and also makes a lot of men look bad when she backs our 24' boat trailer down the ramp like a boss on the first attempt and even right to the perfect depth! We're a hell of a team and fast as a NASCAR pit crew when it comes to launching and trailering our boat. Then there's the opposite kind of people like many in your videos who just shouldn't own a boat or anything with a trailer for that matter, especially when time is of the essence like at the boat ramp on a busy day. I'd hate to be "that guy" who's taking forever and a day holding up the boat ramp. I always try to respect people's time, especially at the boat ramp and even more so when it's busy af.
The last video clip had me laughing out loud! 😂 The unfortunate thing is that they clearly didn’t learn anything about getting the boat on the trailer, and it seems they’ll remain clueless forever.
It seems like quite a few boaters with outboards or stern drives don't understand how to use their unique directional thrust capabilities (forward and reverse) to better manuever their boats. Some power boaters also appear to think that a boat turns like a car, as though the bow should steer like front wheels(!)
Watching these videos I never realized that the Japanese have taken over the outboard market and Mercury is the only domestic maker with the bankruptcy of OMC and the discontinuation of Johnson and Evinrude. Johnson and Evinrude were the goto outboards when I was a kid in the 70's
Are you saying you don’t have to take a test ( theory and practical ) we all have to here in Australia to get your recreational skippers ticket before you can go out on the water 🤦🏻🇦🇺
You know I was honestly wondering after watching all these ramp issues for years if these boats where harder to run than my bass boat. Well after this past weekend I can honestly say these people just have no training or common sense😂
There was definitely a stronger current that day. I know because I was actually operating a boat he filmed. Glad he was amused. At least I wasn’t the worst one out there that day 😂
One thing I haven’t noticed on any of these trailers is side bunks. I have had them on my trailers and they do help to keep the boat within an inch or two centered on the trailer.
I just took out my 24' pontoon a few weeks ago for the first time. Thankfully it didn't go like this! I expected it to and expect future trips to look like this.
I spent many of summers on a very busy lake and my grandparents house was right next to the launch. The biggest contributing factor is obviously inexperience but alcohol is definitely more often the leading cause of the foolishness. I feel that a lot of the problems is not listening and lack of precision throttle and wheel control? ;-) I was just thinking; I wonder if adding lights to the white vertical guide(?) polls so they make lanes on the water would help any? ;-D
You know you say the trailers are in to deep. Funny thing is here in AZ. I’ve seen many load their boat perfect, first time trying and their trailers be in the water pretty deep. Especially pontoon boats. The issue come on the steep ramps and pulling the boats out of the water if they don’t have 4X4.

The wooden things with carpet are not just to hold the boat. They are guides also. Sure wish people would learn that the deeper the trailer is the harder it is to trailer a boat. Trying to line up the bow with the winch post is nearly impossible.
There is always that one guy who tries to load his boat up with 0 throttle with the bimini top up in 20mph side wind. Put the dang bimini top down if it's windy before loading! If not at least don't back your trailer in near as deep as you usually do and come in very hot, but you better hit it square on when you do or your going to have all sorts of issues.

Thank you for that. An arrogant attitude at the boat ramp when someone is doing their best but struggling, does not help. It makes it much worse. I guess some people were just born with excellent trailer backing, boat loading skills. 😉
I learned to back a boat trailer from an old fishing buddy . We launched his boat on a week day and he told me to tow the trailer up to the parking lot and take as much time as I needed, we were the only ones there, to practice. I practiced for about 45 minutes and had no problems after that.

Use the current and wind tu your advantage instead of fighting it and do remember the slower u go the less steering effect you got and please remember once the boat is on trailer first shut down the engine and trim that engine
A lot of these folks have trouble loading their boat cause they have the trailer way too deep. When the bow gets to the front roller, the bunks aren't even touching the bottom of the boat, so it doesn't center properly. 🤦♂️

Simple solution learn to recognize the correct depth your trailer needs to be, most usually only back in till you can see the top 1 ft. of the bunks on the trailer. Now get out of your vehicle and look at the water depth on the back tires. Now learn to use your side mirror and you only have to get out of the truck once. Your Welcome! Why are all these people afraid to get their tires in the water? If you drop your trailer in correctly you don't have to gun your boat to get settled up on the sled....
#intoodeep is thectake away message!
This is painful to watch having grown up working on the water.
Never understood why people think the boat needs to float all the way to the bow stop.
😊 2/3 of them don't know how to put trailer in the water .
Lol righttt
If they are having this much trouble with calm water would hate to watch with the wind blowing
