I landed a temporary help desk position and it was really thanks to this video because I had the guts to continue to apply even after several generic Emails saying they chose another candidate.

Thank you for all your videos. You have inspired me to pursue my dream, I have been an automotive mechanic for the past 8 years, but have never been passionate about it.. computers have always been my passion, since middle school I was building/fixing/troubleshooting computers. Now I’m working my full time automotive job while taking online classes through Coursera, the google cert. I have recently applied to a couple places, despite not having professional experience. I wasn’t really expecting anyone to call back, but I got an interview coming up, which is super exciting.. sorry for the long comment, I just wanted to let you know that you are helping people around the world with your content. Keep it up!

Thanks for your motivational videos. I spent 17 years teaching. The last 2 years I taught in a computer lab. Our IT dept was understaffed and I had to maintain it either by myself or help over the phone. I thought to myself, “why am I not getting paid (better) for doing this?!” And started studying for A+. Any advice for someone with an education background (specifically Social Studies) who wants to switch to IT would be greatly appreciated.

I applied for a support tech position with no exp., No degree, and no certifications in the IT Dept at my place of employment. Though that role was filled with someone else, the IT Director offered me a position as a Hardware Deployment Specialist (to gain hands on experience) with 4 hours a week (with current position) for now as I finish my IS degree and as the company pays for some of my tuition. Customer Service background, wear a freaking suit to the interview, and you are already a step ahead. She shared with me after the fact that 9 out of 10 applicants were walking in in street clothes which very much ruined any chance, despite the IS degree, certifications, and other criteria. So thus starts my IT journey. Though I knew my chances were minimal, The IT Dept carved out a position for me to get involved due to other attributes. It is possible!

I think the biggest concern for me when I finally get my Comptia A+ cert is the lack of knowledge when it comes to knowing how to fix someone’s issue. After looking for helpdesk job postings in my area, it gave me no confidence about being able to do the job. I’m wondering if you have any advice for this issue of mine? Maybe a video of the most common problems people bring to you, to get fixed (besides resetting someone’s password of course). This might help me prepare for the real world.

Have an associate degree in CS, a+ cert, network+ cert, CCNA, plus a few others and cannot get a help desk job. You’ve probably made 50 videos on “how to get a held desk job” and everything I read says all you need is an interest in IT to land a job. It’s way tougher than you make it sound. You better be ready to apply for months on end before landing a job or need to know someone who can get you in

I wasn’t too discouraged about applying for an help desk position. I’m currently a Crim major but realized that I want to get into Computer Science for a career. So I’m picking up a minor in either IT or CS to learn at least something before I graduate with my bachelors next year. I’ve been doing security ( retail, corporate and residential) for 4 years which is basically customer service. I do plan on taking certification programs and classes for programming, website design and graphics in the future but this video just cemented I can get this position when the time is needed. If anyone has advice for me feel free to comment.

But i'm damn good with computers both hardware and software. I can solve problems that my family and friends have with computers very quickly.

Sorry if I am 10 months late on your reply. Hopefully you can see my reply when you get a chance. So another way to practice Linux or any other operating system is if say you own one computer and you have one operating system whether is windows or a mac computer, I suggest you download either Oracle Virtualbox or VMware and you can download a Linux OS iso. Meaning its a virtual operating system that you can install on a "virtual application." So if you haven't discover virtual machine yet, you can thank me later. There are a bunch of tutorials on virtual machine. Just for your information, to ensure compatibility with your system, do a bit of a research before hand to ensure that your computer will work on Intel or AMD depending on your CPU. I have an AMD cpu so it is difficult to run a Mac OS on my PC whereas if I got an Intel CPU, it would run properly. I tried running Mac OS on my virtual machine, and I got a 4:3 aspect ratio which I don't like, then I tried attempting to change the resolution to a 16:9 then the screen started to flicker. So I'm sure it is compatible with Intel and runs better, but not AMD. Happy learning! 😊

@@supercoolmunkee yeah, no vm works in a windows 10 home machine. Most people have just home so that doesn't work. They could do like I had to and grab kali linux iso 32 bit so you could take it to any computer and do it if you wished, winraw to extract the iso from the iso you downloaded and rufus to put it on a thumb drive. Also you have to go to the bios or uefi and turn off secure boot and change the boot order to the usb you made first and then just remember to not have it plugged in while starting your computer. Works wonders for me.

You're probably doing something wrong. Have you tailored your resume? Have you made sure they look good and professional? Have you looked at local and regional businesses? School districts? Do you have any hands-on work with computers? Have you helped any friends or family with their computer issues? Do you have any IT certifications?
Sometimes it is easier to get started smaller businesses especially if they're desperately looking for someone. School districts also a good place to check. The pay may not be great and career advancement may be limited, but its a start.

Too simplistic, I have 4 years at selling electronics for Walmart, cashier on occasion which I hated!!, Like everyone else!!...People are brutal, even if you know your thoroughly studied answer, you must be at the top of your game at all times!!.
They just throwed me on the floor and I made several awful mistakes despite common sense because I was dealing with psicos, male and female, and my co workers with lack of education, were throwing me under the bus!!
-"No! let them take the 10 dollar items at front!!,(right in front of the costumer!) That is humiliating and that after the costumer yelling at me because I treated him like a "thief" he said.
No one covered that for me like many other details.
Now, I'm a veteran, and when I shadowed new people I thought them in detail, I wasn't hiding the thruth of holidays with nasty people, thieves, ot people that will acused you of being racist for not helping them in a split second like a servant, while you are explaining OLED, technology to nice costumers, Others because would blame you of "bad costumer service" because their own ignorance wouldn't let them understand technology, any kind of technology!! that being said, after I explained to them in simple terms.
I became the best and seeked for my knowledge by costumers, after a while, but it wasn't a walk in the park!!.
Setting up phone accounts , observing % discounts, explaining everything about computers, differences, operating systems speeds, capacities, difference display technologies, expensive gamer systems, videogames, vodeogame consoles, phones, tv adapters, streamers, photography, cabling, stupid phone cases, and peripherals. Hotspots, different phones and their operation...And more much more...No one wanted to answer the phones while working on the floor!! It was the most difficult part because people are more abusive when they don't face you!! Of course I had the gutts to do it, and had to make my co workers not relying on me, out of laziness and fear...At least with me they had the surprise when coming over of realizing, they were dealing with a wounded veteran expert -much before- in many other fields but I was able to put them in place, with a hard Seargent's look .
Apply yourself, if you are going to do it, and keep cool, calm and collected no matter what...If you can't do that, it is not for you...I'm injured I had no choice.
I'm looking for a job as an IT Admin....I didn't think I had to do help desk...But at least, I have vast experience now.
