By personal experience, help desk is a good entry position. From there, it diverges. Either you love people and go into more admin roles or you hate people and go more into programing/development.
I have this same question and this was great. I’m just really impressed at how supportive the IT community is. I’m leaving higher education which is full of red tape, egos, and thievery. Just simply robbing these kids with overpriced education.
Yes many colleges are way too overpriced. Currently working an entry level IT job and my employer is covering my associates lol. Good enough for me atm.

I love helping people with a passion and working alone is fine once in a while but with a great team of people is awesome. I have loads of customer service experience. I love learning stuff about tech! Just listening to this video, I see my self more in IT. I took cosmetology class being a artist and while I was talking with my teacher she came out and said I could see you more involved in IT work, why I can't remember how the conversation started for her to say that but eventually I drop the class! Now that I watch this video, WOW I can see my self doing this line of work and it is amazing how she had the foresight to see that in me!
I appreciate this video more than you know. I feel so lost when it comes to where I want to end up. Enrolled in school and they’ve basically told me I have 2 classes I can take that will overlap with most of the career paths, and after that I’ve basically been told I need to decide what my major is. It’s overwhelming because I keep seeing these videos where people get 2 years into a path and decide they don’t like it, and I don’t want that to happen. It seems asinine for me to have to pick a major or a specialization so soon before I even learned the ins and outs of the jobs. I’m terrified to make the wrong choice.
Your videos are very helpful for me thumbs up! I am looking to get started in this field due to back injuries I can no longer work construction. So far you have given me clear insight into what my path should be and where to start thank you. You have a sub from me and will continue to watch your content cheers
Just want to say this video is amazing. I’m not the most computer savvy guy but I’m a hard worker and love to learn and I just signed up to get all my certifications in IT and three of the certificates are the ones that you talked about so I’m really glad you mention them makes me feel a lot better about choosing the school that I did. It all comes down to 15,000 just wanted to know if you think it’s worth it.?
Hey Johnny Cash, I love your music, especially that cover of Nine Inch Nails - Hurt - That is honestly the best cover song I've ever heard in my life...I thought you were dead though? All kidding aside! I'm glad you found this video useful! Sounds like you have a good path set ahead of you. As far as the $15,000 that sounds like a lot of money to me. You can join Pluralsight, ITProTV, Skillsoft or CBT Nuggets for less than $1,000 a year...some of them you can get their yearly price around $500 or less. Then the certification costs are around $300 a pop. So you could save yourself a ton of money by doing it that way. However if you feel more comfortable being in a classroom setting I completely understand! I hope this helps! Good luck!
I would say self study is the best path to IT Certification I believer COMPTIA has their own online training with live instruction will save you a bundle.
Thank you for this video as all of your videos are filled with so much info that really helps me out. I'm currently using pluralsight right now as we speak and I absolutely love it! I love the fact that you ca test your knowledge on your subjects of interest to see where your IQ score for each subject you're assessed on. I just score a 118 on the Security Fundamentals and I'm new to IT. Right my background is in logistics and I have over 12 years experience in it and I'm looking to change careers because I want career where I'm constantly learning something new everyday!

I already have a bachelors in criminal justice and I am almost 40. I believe this video has help me to narrow things down. I just now need to find Boot Camp for coding the 8+ and security plus certification so that I can get started in the business thank you.
I actually browsed the CompTIA website but didn't notice it had such a great PDF with an overview. Great video by the way. I hadn't realized Security+ was so relevant.
Hey thank you for this video. This is going to help me a lot. Currently im working as a machine operator with experience in the dairy industry. However ive studied occupational health and safety as a diploma to start work as an H&S advisor. My real interest is a career somewhere in IT, im pretty much in the same boat as the person who asked the question. So now i have a little info on where to go.
Your video on this matter is awesome man! It was of a such great help! I recently got my bachelors in MIS, and I have been all over the place trying to find my way through! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. Your videos are very helpful for me to understand the IT industry. This will also be a good start for me to further study this subject.

I’ve done research if you need a college degree to get into IT. I’ve read on the CompTIA website that it’s a myth that you need a college degree to get an entry level job in IT. A family friend who works in IT told me the same thing and that certifications and experience run the IT world. On the other hand, I’ve searched on google jobs, IT careers, and I want to be able to work at home. 95% of the job postings required or preferred a bachelors degree in computer science or related. I’ve been trying to look for someone who works in IT to get advice from. I have 19 credits left to finish my associates degree and I’ve been constantly debating if I want to finish the degree and then pursue a bachelors to look good on my resume to put on a job website so that companies who are hiring will want to reach out to me for having degrees plus certifications. Nearly everyone I know tells me to get a degree because it can’t hurt and that’s what today’s world has come to. I’d like to start a career early, but I have not shadowed anyone in IT so I don’t even know if it would be something I would like to do. I’m not too big of a big fan of college overall, but I don’t really know what to do. What kind of advice do you have for me? Will a degree help me to look good for other companies?
Great video. Really appreciate all the information. I spent the last 2 decades in the Coast Guard working on boats. I just retired and I no longer want to turn a wrench for a living. I’ve always been really interested in IT but other then writing reports ( Microsoft etc) I’m not very good with computers. I think I’m gonna enroll in a 2 year degree at the local community college. My question is do you think this is something that anyone with the right effort and schooling can learn ( even later in life)? I ask because everyone I know that’s ever done IT work have been hackers, coders, computer guys since they could walk. Thanks again for the great video. I’ll check out the sight.

I’ve literally taken only 3 classes that actually let me get “technical” experience. I’m studying for my A+ certification right now. I hope to have it before I graduate in May. I just really wanna get real technical experience. It just seems like even for the entry level help desk jobs they don’t wanna hire me because I have literally no experience. Well done vid! One lady at my work said she used to be an accountant but then changed roles into be a programmer and doing things with sql. Maybe that person you answered the question for would like the same!
5:28 curious but what kind of job can you get where you don't have to help people? jobs like plumber, waiter, pharmacy technician, pharmacist, manager grocery store, sales, even software engineers are helping out their colleagues and customers out a lot of the time -- being bugged by newer software engineers. the list goes on and on. i can't think of a job where you don't spend time each part of your work day helping someone some of the time.
Hi Zach, I'm pretty much in the same boat as that lady who asked where to start. I've seen quite a bit of your material on here, and noticed that you seem to be a heavy advocate for ITprotv in most of your other videos, but in this one you highlighted Pluralsight. I'm kind of older to be just getting into the IT field, and for that reason I'll be targeting certifications, and pick up college as a mid game event, after I've been in the field a while and have a good standing. Anyway, I've been fairly persuaded, by you and some lengthy online reasearch, to use ITproTV as my main study guide. I'll be getting their premium package because I really love the idea of hands on labs, but it is a little expensive, though, I should be able to wing on a monthly basis; however, should I reconsider to a less expensive Pluralsight? Also, thank you for your work. Seeing some of your videos really put my header in the way of an IT career.
Hey Chris! Thank you for leaving this comment and watching the channel as well as doing your due diligence! The companies I promote are the ones that I believe in and have vetted personally. I'm a huge believer of using multiple resources to study from. I don't mean you have to sign up for a multitude of things simultaneously but switching things up and utilizing different teaching styles can be helpful. With that said, sometimes I can't promote multiple resources in one video. This doesn't mean that one is better than another. You may find that you will enjoy ITPro.tv more and that's great! I feel like it's my responsibility to not only share the most informative knowledge about this field as I can, but also share the most valuable resources that you can learn from as well. I put in a lot of work to make sure that the companies I talk about are going to be something that you my viewer are going to find value from. The last thing I want to do is talk about a crap product and you come back upset with me because I reccomend that. That will only tarnish my reputation and that is not worh it to me. I'm here to help people first and foremost. The fact that I get sponsored from these types of companies will always fall further down the line in order of importance. I apologize for the lengthy response, however I want to be sure everyone understands where I am coming from. To give you the best answer to your question though, they both offer free trials. Utilize those to see which you enjoy the most.
Currently in school for CBIS, with a focus on Network+ and Security+ because i work on an AF base currently, and have gotten to know quite a few IT officials. I might have an easy way into the system if i play my cards right and get the right certifications in time.
I can vouch for Pluralsight being great but it can be quite pricey and I think most schools and public libraries give access to Lynda for free. Pluralsight recently took up Code School which was an amazing site to learn all sorts of programming (especially for beginners) but in fun ways. I haven't seen what it has become on Pluralsight but I imagine it's still just as good.
Your videos is one of the most illustrated videos that I’ve seen, and I learn how to start my career and how to lookout for better understanding how it’s going to be my life in the it field, because I remember that coding in the past wasn’t my passion but how to make thing done a solve a problem yes 👍, so I’m going to starting my journey to the google it support certificate, and then the comptia A+ certificate. And see if I learn and develop a better understanding of the field and what a really want to do. Thanks for your videos and also, I want to ask you something, is a way to get certifications but free or almost free like, very cheap? Are they worth it? Thanks 🙏🏻
I’m currently a police officer and part time security specialist contractor, I’m in a degree for cyber security. I have no certs or experience but I want a career change. Can I get into IT while I’m in school still?
After coming across your videos online i decided it was time to start my IT journey! I start IT professional on Monday. Its a year long program. U had mentioned that it would be good to intern a IT job for experience amd i actually got hired on at a college doing learning IT! My question is i am highly interested in programming/developers. What route should I take?
I suggest researching IT jobs to get an idea of what the job is like and see if it is something that may interest you. I work in school IT support. My main job is to provide tech support to the teachers and staff at my assigned school sites. I reset passwords, reset Chromebooks, replace keyboards, troubleshoot and fix SMART Board problems, some printer problems, and a myriad of other things. If you don't like working less technically savvy people, you may not necessarily enjoy working in a support role.
I've learned a lot from your videos..now i need a piece of advice from you.i've recently received an offer from mnc based in usa for service desk engineer..plz guide me what should be my future roadmap...i have decided to get into IT through this because i really enjoyed solving pc issues and helping people witj there problems.i also have a knack for security.
This channel is GREAT it brings things down to earth! Question though, I'm 29, working in the insurance industry making 50k a year and I want to get into Network Admin...is it an unrealistic goal to want to get enough certifications to skip the help desk thing and jump into something at least on a network tech or Jr. Network Admin role paying at least the same or close to what I'm making now?
I know your comment is 3yrs old but how’s it going now? Did you ever make the jump? I’m kinda in the same situation you were talking about. I don’t want to take a huge pay cut just to get into IT.

I submitted 100 applications with 0 experience, 0 certs and no school. With also a felony for marijuana. And I got an entry IT support job. You can do it. It was from indeed but you should apply on many platforms. I submitted almost 100 applications before I landed this job.
For the MCSA certification, would you recommend Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2016?
I find this video very helpful to me. Thank you very much, and please keep uploading informative videos in IT like this. 👍
This was SOOOOOO informative!! Thank you!
Hellow? Alyea

the roadmap link no longer works.
Well done vid! One lady at my work said she used to be an accountant but then changed roles into be a programmer and doing things with sql. Maybe that person you answered the question for would like the same!
Keep up the good work Seth.
Thank you very much for making this video, very valuable information.
How Seth Regan knows so much about I.T ?!
Good info., this vid has renewed my interest in the IT field.
You're awesome! Thanks.
Great video! I'll keep this in my back pocket when recommending different IT paths to my friends.
thank you for sharing!
Currently in school for CBIS, with a focus on Network+ and Security+ because i work on an AF base currently, and have gotten to know quite a few IT officials. I might have an easy way into the system if i play my cards right and get the right certifications in time.
Great presentation. Very informative and thought provoking.
Yea your video is really helpful. Thanks a lot
Thanks 🙏🏻
I have a bachelor’s in cybersecurity but not many certifications. I have not found a job after several hundred applications
Informative! Thank you
Don't forget Network+ - you can't really keep a Network secure if you don't even know how to manage it.
Very informative. You're a great Talker. Thanks.
I’m currently a police officer and part time security specialist contractor, I’m in a degree for cyber security. I have no certs or experience but I want a career change. Can I get into IT while I’m in school still?
Great video Zach. Thanks for the info.
What camera are you using for this video???
Your videos are very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
Very useful video. Huge thanks!
Thank you for the video. I was in the same boat as well. This is definitely some good information.
I'm happy to be able to help in any way that I can! Good luck to you!

You are very welcome! Glad I could help!
An amazing and really helpful video!
Very useful video. Already getting very motivated
One thing I’m having difficulty is….what the right fit is for me in IT! How can I better determine what path I want to take?
I suggest researching IT jobs to get an idea of what the job is like and see if it is something that may interest you.
I work in school IT support. My main job is to provide tech support to the teachers and staff at my assigned school sites. I reset passwords, reset Chromebooks, replace keyboards, troubleshoot and fix SMART Board problems, some printer problems, and a myriad of other things. If you don't like working less technically savvy people, you may not necessarily enjoy working in a support role.
How does one continuously learn in this field? What sources do you go to/use to stay up to date?
Thank you so much. Can you tell me what hourly salary I should expect in entry level IT ( help desk), and where can I study for the comptia a+?
Legend mate, very helpful!
without a college degree can i get a job in IT with a huge salary

Best teacher 🌷
Thank you, I definitely do what I can!
What is the perfect it environment to work in? Ex: From home,in the industrial are,in an office..etc.
Very helpful, thank you!
@@Daniel_Scott89 your timing is so uncanny 😅😂 I've been studying SQL and JUST received a job offer for a Technical Consultant role paying $85k, I literally start March 28th and I'm pumped to be able to make a career transition with such solid pay! Sr level position in this role which I should strive for within 3-5 years starts around $120k/year as well, keep at it man!
Thanks bro, very informative and interesting. 👍👍
