  • The mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro has said his city is "on its knees" after facing an unprecedented flooding event this month.
Water levels rose above 1.5 metres three times in a single week - it's never risen to that level even twice in a single year.
While the damage is still being assessed, there are fears there could be irreparable damage to some of Venice's historic treasures.
The famed Saint Mark's Basilica was flooded for just the sixth time in 1,200 years, but the fourth time in the last two decades.
The haunting sirens that warn Venetians of the acqua alta, or high waters, are becoming more frequent.
Mr Brugnaro has blamed climate change, saying Venice is "in the trenches" in the fight against rising tides.
But is there more to the city's woes, and can the floods ever be stopped?

As a geologist, I appreciate volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis… People die in all of them. The phenomena are awe-inspiring and appreciated for what naturally powerful events they are.
But it’s bittersweet because I know that humans who take advantage of the resources that such at-risk areas provide, inevitably get killed by the very processes that help civilizations to thrive.

That’s very inappropriate for a tourist to say the Venetian government needs to “get its act together”.
You do realise the geographical hindrance that they face. Plus it will cost around £7 billion for 100’s of steel gates to stop the water.
You’re acting like it’s a walk in the park. I’m sure they are trying to do everything they can to protect their own country and city. Stupid comment.

First of all I think it is brilliant that they built this city on water. It takes some risk and they managed to do that.. In the graph that showed the times venice has been flooded over the last decades it is obvious that the flooding is happening more frequently. That is quite a problem, imagine yourself living in Venice, would you leave the place that you live in where you have all your family and friends? Most people wouldn't I guess. It is terrible for the people who live there and I really hope they will find a solution to this particular problem. In The Netherlands they claimed land from the sea, but there has not been a flooding since 1953, I guess Venice can learn something from the Dutch here. How about the bigger picture? The reason that there are more and more floods cannot only be because of the winds that come from the northern africa and meet with the cold air of the medditeranean sea and inland winds from eastern europe. The is something called climate change happening. The sea levels are rising, that is a fact we cannot deny. The events happening, like this flooding in venice, we cannot deny. How long until we are gonna stand up and make a change towards climate change? I get the feeling that everyone is being so ignorant towards climate change. I think we, humans of the world, can stand up and do something against this climate change

What happened is many decades ago Venice drilled thousand of new wells to expand its port etc. What that did was suck the water from the mud the billion pilings were driven into.
