Poker Hands - Mike McDermott Lays Down A MONSTER?!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 гру 2024
- Mike McDermott must still be having pipe dreams about playing in the 2016 WSOP Main Event, because clearly his head is not in the game. Does he realize that he just folded top two pair on the flop? Even considering that this is a high stakes poker game of life and death, the play seems rather nitty. What does Doug Polk make of it?
Once again, Doug is here to break down the action and step into the shoes of each player. There's quite a lot to sort out here as players are opening 20x preflop, laying down monsters, betting many multiples of the pot, and making such crazy plays that you would almost think that someone just made all these hands up.
Poker Hands is a regular program on this channel and features notable hands from shows such as Poker After Dark, WPT (World Poker Tour), the EPT (European Poker Tour), WSOP (World Series of Poker), and PCA (Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure) and The Big One For One Drop. It also features top players like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Dan Colman, Fedor Holz, Phil Hellmuth, and many more.

Sorry Doug but all this is irrelevant. Teddy just ate the Oreo. He had to fold. I repeat: Teddy ate the OREO.
Did Maria Ho's opponent eat an oreo when she folded that set?
Damn it Doug what part of the Oreo cookie eating do you not understand?
@@toptenguy1 and what about Phil with the nut straight 😂
yes an important distinction indeed
Doug, we're waiting for Casino Royale final hand analysis
LekkoPlayingGames
The Casino Royale meme is fn HILARIOUS...
Calls OOP w/A-9off, loses $200 million, dies.
Alan Jankowski LeKassoufre meme is better
that hand just doesn't make any sense. how can anyone go to showdown on the river shoving with 6 or 5 bbs in a four-way pot.
dejwidkoperfild hilarius
holy shit make him do it
"If you're going to raise to 5k, don't put 6k in the pot"
Good advice.
Unless you announce it, then I think is fine :D They will give it back to you...
Doug, besides a great poker player, you're growing to be an awesome entertainer!
TY Sir! Trying to embrace the spirit of youtube.
Doug Polk Doug I am so tilted you haven't changed the title to "Polker Hands" lol. It is too perfect to pass up!
@@DougPolkPoker please analyze final hand of Casino Royale, for the lolz. Love your humor, man. Not a fan of loosely using the one time, but can you please do the Casino Royale hand ONE TIME!!! ☝️ ⏰
that bronze joke at the end cracked me up yo
When Mike says "Not hungry?" after the oreos are thrown across the room, the ultimate troll response. I just found that a hilarious moment.
its a risky move to be honest, maybe you tilt him causing him to play poorly... but the reality is that after this hand teddy KGB has 32,000 out of 40k total? putting mike extremely short, and these guys are ALREADY PLANNING to beat the hell out of him in 6 hours if he loses that last 6k. Not sure poking the bear is the best move here, plus giving away your opponent's tell.
It's been years since I play poker online. But having the opportunity to listen to the analysis of one of the best players in the world is amazing. I wish this kind of content was available when I played. Congratz Doug, keep up the good work. :)
lmao share that bronzer strat bro
Doug,
I just recently learned of you and your UA-cam vids and started following your career.
I got news for you, bro...
If for whatever reason your poker "playing" career doesn't work out, you'd make one HELLUVA poker commentator! Not only are you ridiculously knowledgeable, but you are great at communicating, put sometimes difficult concepts in laymans's terms, and also have a great sense of humor!
Keep up the great work!
Doug you are killing the UA-cam game! Keep at I really enjoy your videos and that bronzer segment at the end was great lmao!
+Just2Good3 Thanks! Really enjoyed making this video and got a good laugh at the end myself.
Doug, I know many hand histories aren't shown because the show tends to glamorize more of the "poker lifestyle" but I think it would be cool if you could find anything on 2 months 2 million and analyze a hand.
+Peter Cross Interesting Idea, will consider it
Especially the hands that they played against amosa
Peter Cross b
haha maybe analyse the casino royale hand where james bond luckboxes astraight flush and slowrolls the whole table what a classy dude
Doug - these are some of my favorite videos of yours - I've watched them several times now. And you're exactly right, even with the unrealistic play, we can still learn a great deal from analysis and "what not to do". If you're so inclined, I'd love to see some other "movie" poker hands analyzed. You could even make it a series!
Teddy KGB: " ... And in my club I'll string bet whenever the fuck I want."
At 1:45 I was going to ask if Donkey Bronze was a color but you beat me to the punchline at the end of end of the video. WP
Poker Hands is my favorite series on UA-cam right now. Keep it up Doug!
Funniest thing for me about these rounders videos are the players profile graphics :D Keep it up doug
LMAO 😂😂😂. KGB's reaction to Matt Damon folding ace five was priceless. The anger and disgust was priceless. 😂😂😂😂
2:45 worst angle shoot ever!
Worst part is how he says afterward he could have kept using that tell, but he didn't have enough time. As if needing to win 15k total in a 50-100 HU game is hard, and as if it's hard when guys are constantly betting 2-5x pot. It's amazing that not a single poker show can get the poker anywhere close to right.
The mantra is "don't call the turn to fold the river" and it's meant to apply to situations where there are very few river cards that should change the relative strength of your hand. Like if you have two pair and your opponent is representing a set or better by the turn - you decide if there's enough bluffs on the turn to allow you to call knowing your opponent will likely put stacks in on the river.
dude... your subscriber count is BLOWING UP you are a poker "Hero"!
+asdfjk; WE'RE DOING IT FAM
Really enjoyed this - great banter
Thanks for this vid :D I love all of your video's really, but this one for sure has the most entertainment value
KGB said "No checks here. I tap you." Essentially he's putting his opponent all in.
love your videos! this one was hilarious, I felt Mike should've called because in rounders the river is always the ace of spades. just my two cents
Recent subscriber. I don't play much more casual but you have a very likable personality. Will keep watching. Keep up the good work Doug.
The other take-away from this hand is that if you find a tell on your opponent, don't advertise it by laying down a monster, and showing it to him.
4:10 it's very clear what KGB said: I tap you. He's puts mike all-in.
Is very clear? He’s eating a fucking cookie as he’s saying it.
Teddy not having 42 and giving that speech made me lol
But doug... he ate the damn cookie!!
Also, if you pick a live tell that reliable, do not share it with your opponent. There's more value in exploiting that in both the short / long term than the advantage gained by temporarily tilting an already hyper aggro player.
-A fellow live player who has started playing the micros online.
0:59 Ok so... I don't want to diminish from the hilarity of your dry sarcasm. Cracked me up! But as I look at this, I assume these are $50 chips, and Teddy is raising $5000 above the $1000 that Mike bet. In which case, it all checks out. Still... awesome!
Hey Doug, Great work you are doing. Learning a lot...!! Just one question... If we use only analytical reasoning and make every decision.. wouldn't all hero calls and hero folds be bad? I mean you can not deny factors like instincts and live reads, rt? Is n't those two are as major factors of a game as much as maths? Also I feel in major tournaments isn't this makes a difference between some one who wins and some one who just makes it to the final table?
if you have a read, go with the read. if not, go GTO.
hi doug, that 1st hand was awesome, best hand in poker history, but was it real money or play money?
Seems pretty real to me
too real
KGB sounds like he says: "No checks here. I tap you."
Yeah, there's another scene where Mike says "I'm gonna tap you, Teddy" before betting. I've never heard that term anywhere else, but makes sense.
Yup, that's what he says. Tap means to put your opponent all in.
Some poker night in america hands would be interesting to do. Also you have any interest on playing on the show Doug? would love to see you on.
you really might just be the goat, mr polkster!
if you are a fan of The Sopranos, you could do that one hand where Silvio is getting fed up with the cheese, you could really dig deep into the table talk and how it correlates to hand strength!
I know you and your inner troll would have fun doing that...
You can tell Doug wasn't part of the live poker scene 20 years ago. Raising anything less than 10 BB during this time period would frequently get multiple callers so raising extra big with a big hand like KK is likely a good idea particularly heads up when players were even looser than they are now. 20 years ago it wouldn't be that unlikely for Mike to go all in with his KK and get called by a hell of a lot worse than just AA.
I can recall a game I Had about the same time period I had AA most players at the table were 200+ deep in blinds, UTG raised 5BB next player raised to 50BB me looking down at my AA after seeing two raisers I Jam all in for about 250BB and I end up getting 4 callers the best hand that called was K5off. This was a crazy time and players weren't as sophisticated as they are now.
lol this one was good doug...prob my favorite video of yours ever
Casino Royale hands ?? This series is like a small TV show! love it!
btw the oreo doesn't mean strength its when he eats it like when mike jams pre flop teddy takes a cookie opens it but puts it back
Mikey counting out his chips as if he wanted to go for a c-bet suggests that Teddy limp/called from the SB with his 42(s?). The action makes a lot more sense that way. A c-bet is mandatory on that flop, thus the physical tell serves to alert McDermott into changing his mind.
Hey, Doug! Can you review the hand where Howard Lederer got "Durrrred" by Tom Dwan? If I remember correctly it's the hand where Howard has AK and loses to Durrr with some weak pair
Nice vid Doug!To rant about Rounders for a sec, so much of any scene in Teddy's poker room has always bugged me. Firstly, the preflop action headups has the small and big blind backwards, which I've always found super irritating! But also, right before this scene they agreed to double the blinds (50/100). Within the scene in question it appears as though Teddy had $450 out preflop (two green $25 and four black $100 chips, as shown on the flop only view) however when he bets the flop the $50 looks more like $100 (one black chip) which would actually make sense seeing as he's the big blind at this new stake.
+powerofSHN22 This movie is riddled with things that don't make sense in the poker scenes. You just have to believe #Ibelieve
Fair enough lol. Keep up the good work man, I appreciate all your content!
It's Teddy's room and they post the blinds however the fuck he pleases
Doug, please review the hand where justin has QJ and Brian has AT. Justin overbet the turn with a gutter and Rast had a full house. it was the last hand of the wsop championship tournament. Thanks.
I still love the movie despite all the inaccuracies.I remember seeing it as a kid and poker seemed so romantic back then. But then came the the huds, the training sites and all the other bs that ruined the game.I truly hope poker can have another boom and we all get to play together all around the world. But besides ending segregation in Europe and making it legal in the US, it`s also on all of the sites to lower the rake, ban all external programs and make it a theory/feel based game again.Recreational players would play for longer and enjoy the game much more while the winrates of the top players would probably skyrocket.
Pandering to recs has accomplished little for the card rooms that have tried it like Bodog.
>ban all external programs
Impossible. You don't understand how programming works, as most poker players do not. Without putting a blindfold over the player's eyes and disguising him from all third party betting action, you cannot get rid of HUDs.
>feel based game again
Why?
+TheBoldImperator
PokerStars can detect whether you're using i.e. HoldemManager. So it is possible to ban HUDs.
This channel made me think diffrently about some spots. THANKS!
He didn't raise to 5k, he raised 5k over 1k, which is 6k.
Your videos are getting better and better. Great job Doug!
I don't how you kept a straight face doing this one man. Lol.
Had me rollin', thinking, then rollin' again...in that order. Good shit. Keep the comedy coming!
The ending is exactly why I love you Doug!
You should do one on that ridiculous final hand from James Bond Casino royal. Flush, full house, full house, straight flush.
Doug where did you get the shirt
Have you ever done a breakdown of Casino Royale's poker scenes?
Another great video. Killer content, quality production and ended on a laugh.
Classic vids, Doug! Re watching rn
Why did he show the laydown? Can't Teddy just eat a cookie to represent strong hands now?
That is interesting but my take on it would be that your strategy mentioned is more relevant for a longer tournament. Heads up, Mike probably wanted a quicker game. He knows Teddy has the propensity to tilt, so getting him on tilt would help ensure he makes some mistakes and gets his money in bad. Just my opinion :)
He explains why in the movie.
Joshua Thomas yeah, but folding and showing makes him SO exploitable...
He explains in the movie that he’d usually say nothing, but he’s on a clock and wants him to tilt
Might be wrong but I don’t think the tell is grabbing an oreo, but if the oreo gets split cleanly. Split poorly (nervous) folds, splits nicely (calm) raises and Mike is sure Teddy has the nuts lmao
Im a pretty novice card player: now I understand the idea about playing the percentages and wanting to maximize the pot. However, if you always do the same thing in a certain situation, don't you become predictable?
it's not about doing the same thing in certain situations.
Each situation, although similar, is also different, but in many "different" situations the betting style is similar.
In the end, it's not about being predictable, but about not being read.
Hey Doug, love the vids! To clarify, did you look like you had bronzer on because you changed the lighting or some camera setting and then actually put on bronzer for the gag?
That opening had me laughing so hard! Best opening to any of your videos I've seen so far!
Yo, Doug! Do the last hand in "Maverick" at the All Rivers Tournament... Quads Vs. Straight Flush Vs. Royal Flush!!!
Once you understood the concept that, sometimes, you can't avoid losing alot of money, you ironically start making alot more money
i love you, that's why i'm gonna to draw u for a new french poker magazine! keep ur amazing artistic work !!
I loved rewatching this movie recently with the Pro commentary On. (Hellmuth, Chan, Money Maker. Etc) cause they basically trash how unrealistic and how there's so much wrong.
So they could bring the stars in for commentary but not to help with the poker basics? 😳😲😬👏👏👏
Can you make the next series about the casino royal hands?
doug do a review on ssome 5 stud hands in the cinciinatti kid curious to see ur opinion on it
Thanks for this Doug. Good coaching
I started laughing when Doug said, "don't string bet".
Thanks for making me laugh, Dougie.
Besides those errors, it seems like we're all in agreement that both hands were played perfectly.
I know I’m late to this video, and this was probably addressed in another comment, but when Teddy listens to the Oreo opening, he has it. When he watches the Oreo opening, he doesn’t. Plus, he eats the Oreo after listening, not after watching.
Everyone has a tell. Take me for instance. When I have a good hand I undo my pants and plop my balls right on the table. Not once have I ever busted out of a game. Although I have always been kicked out before hand 10, but that is not important. And I have still made 27 trillion dollars playing $1/$2...over the last year.
End was funny, keep em coming.
LOL the best analysis ever !!!!
The faces next to each of the players is just hilarious.
he announces a raise at first, therefore there's not stringraise IMO
John Beltrán Serna
Yes, he announced raise. But you cannot go back to get more and more chips after putting out your call/first forward motion of raising chips
You can put more chips after your call if you announced raise first. Actually, you have to, because the verbal declaration is binding. However, you have to put all your raising chips in at once.
Trias00
Trias00
Trias00
Lemme clarify...
That's exactly what I meant by "going back to get more and more"...you're allowed one "major" forward motion to put chips in the pot PRIOR to verbal declaration. This hand and the one where he REALLY splashes the pot, he starts bombing stacks in PRIOR to declaring his raise amount. Highly illegal.
Alan Jankowski
I know, I disagreed with you only partially.
Breaking down the epic KGB vs Mikey HU match from Rounders?? Polker Gold.
Hey Dog Polk, love the content, keep it up
You got it wrong. Mike is playing for his life in this one game. You are using calculations based on math for winning in the long run.
Eating an oreo is a tell not just the oreo. He always cracks them but only eats them on strong hands
I dunno. The arguement that "since I am good here 70% of the time I should play it 100% of the time in order to protect the 30% of the time I am not good" kinda falls flat when you consider the fact the kid's life was on the line AND his gut told him to fold (oreo apparently the trigger).
Rounders was seriously flawed when it came to poker, but it wasnt a movie about poker, it was a movie centered around having the guts to pursue your original dreams even when it would be easier to simply give up on your dreams and accept an easily obtainable alternative life instead.
On this hand the preflop is irrelevant - Mike could have already committed half his stack for all we know; the point is his brain told him he was good but his gut told him he was not.
Because Mike's gut was what he relied on when the rest of the world told him poker was a bad idea he listened to ot instead of cold logic (which would have chosen a well paying and easily obtainable legal profession for him in any event).
So, by folding here, Mike is actually completing his metamorphosis into a man that follows his instincts against reason, using his mind as a guide and not a dictator of action.
He is going to become the man he wants to be, not just a man he could be or even should be.
And that man decided to fold - maybe he had KGB beat but realized KGB was going to draw out on him with a miracle 4 on the river after putting Mike allin with A5?
Or maybe Mike had only committed a small portion of his stack and, based on his tell, was willing to risk donuts for the chance at confirming the proverbial read on Teddy?
In any event, love your vids Doug, but you will just never be able to understand Mike in Rounders even though you have so much in common with him.
You are a math player and Mike is an example of a feel player; you guys are earth and sky.
Well, the final hand of Casino Royale has already been done... but not the final hand of The Cincinnati Kid. Why don't you tackle it? I know 5-card stud is nowadays considered too trivial to be worth any attention, but there were some crazy moves on that hand, and it would be fun.
Also, in the first opening hand with KK, Mike announced a "raise" when it should have been a "bet" because wasn't he first to act pre flop?
Preflop, the blind counts as a bet. Except you can even raise your own "bet", i.e. if you're in the big blind and somebody just called.
disclaimer, i don’t know the specifics about poker. So that being said, teddy tells mike “no checks here, i tap you”. can anyone explain this to me since I have no idea what that means? I don’t really get the scene in it’s entirety this part seems super important. thank you in advance 🙏
What movie is this from?
Rounders
Michael Lentini cocktail
Doug Polk makes me laugh...love the bronzer skit!
Is rounders the auto biography of mike matusow
After watching this clip I immediately rewatched the whole movie. I guess the hands don't hold up but the movie is very enjoyable nevertheless. :)
eating the oreo means strength
_Not_ Mike's best read of the film, IMO. "The Judges' Game" was just a sick series of reads. I've never found someone to properly break it down and prove that it wasn't bullshit. I'd love to see you take a stab at sussing or debunking it, Doug! :^D
"Judges' Game" is impossible to breakdown. We don't see the face up cards and we don't see the discards. The action isn't even clear until fourth street when Mikey enters the scene ("You've seen half the hand! How the fuck are you betting into us?")
Hard to break down a live multiway 7CS hand when we don't have most of the info. It is bullshit, of course, no amount of card skill allows you to dead read five players half a hand in, but impossible to breakdown in any serious manner.
Something just occurred to me. Mike thought he was good enough to make this run at KGB because he bluffed Johnny Chan, but we never once see him bluff KGB. Would this scene with KGB have been better if Mike made this play with 72 off suit?
What about the PLO mantra, "Never bet a straight when a flush is possible."
if you got the nut flush blocker, its fine
Teddy says "I tap you" btw, as in "I put you all-in"
How does Doug get to we need to call with 15% of our range to prevent from being bluffed when KGB bets 5 times the pot?
What's the equation here?
RoadTripperrr
1/1+5
5 being the proportion of the pot
= 16.67%
Thanks. Is there a name for this formula, or do you know where I can read about this so I can understand how it works?
"The Mathematics of Poker" by Bill Chen and Jerrod Ankenman
What is this taken from? Some movie?
"Rounders"
Thats where Hellmuth learned to play his flop straight...hummmm!!! Glad you went reverse white magic on him and save 90k ish ;)
Mike wasn’t worried about the World Series of Poker at that moment. If he goes tap Grammar was gonna kill him .
You didn't mention the most important point: when you pick up a tell, DON'T TELL YOUR OPPONENT
In his club, Teddy KGB can string bet...whenever...the F#$&!...he wants....
