    As a matter of fact, in 1912, Japan gave about 6000 young trees of cherry blossoms to US.
    The half of them were sent to DC, and the other were to NY.
    The cherry blossoms in DC have been much more famous, because they were planted and taken care of by the First Ladies and national authorities.
    But the fact seems to be almost forgotten that in NY, too, many trees of cherry blossoms were planted along the Hudson River at the same time, which include the trees in "Sakura Park" and "Riverside Park" and so on.

      @@antihypocrisy8978 Oh right. President Roosevelt of the United States, The neutral country, suspended oil exports to Japan in July and forced Japan to start a war. Thank you Yankee for forcing us to start a war and burning so many civilians to death.

      In NY the planting ceremony was held in front of the General US Grant National Memorial, which was still under construction, a month after the ceremony in DC. Why General Grant?
      He had visited Japan on his world tour after retiring the US President, in 1879, stayed two months, welcomed by thousands of people and given his useful advices to the Japanese political leaders, including the Emperor Meiji.
      They thanked him heartily for his kindness and never failed to show their respect for him.
      It is easy to imagine they would have wanted him to enjoy the Japanese Cherry Blossoms as a token of their gratitude.

      this is not unique to Japan, as the tradition originates on the mainland, specifically with China, where the Cherry and plum blossoms are immortalized in poetry and paintings and parks over thousands of years. The trees that ended up surviving in the US were in fact found on short notice by looting them from Korea. The ones you see are Korean trees, stolen by Japanese imperialist colonizers, the same brutal fascist regime that would attack Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.

What makes it so special is that you can only extract the pink colour from the tree for the 2-3 weeks when they are in flower. Magic.

    Japan is an amazing country, so unique and an advanced society.
    I have the chance to live in Montreal the only city in Canada with the largest urban park with cherry blossom trees around the city . The botanical garden in Montreal is the most important botanical gardens in the world by virtue of the extent of its collections and facilities, such as its 22,000 plant species and cultivars, ten large exhibition greenhouses, thirty thematic gardens and vast Arboretum;

      These trees were looted from Korea, a mainland country Japan was cruelly and brutally occupying at that time. They asserted themselves as superior and tried to erase Korean culture and identity. The tradition of cultivating cherry and plum blossoms comes from the mainland, and originates in China, where the displays are on a scale far more grand and spectacular than you can ever dream, and where the technology is decades ahead of anything Japan has today, as Japan has stagnated to a large degree since the 1997 Asia crisis.
