The Sad Story Of Henry The Engine (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver)

- So apparently on Last Week Tonight with
John Oliver there was an episode discussing the state of railroads in America, in that episode there was a parody of a Thomas episode
This is said episode!
Hopefully god doesn’t strike me down where I stand
Not the first person to post this but definitely not the last
In my opinion, this is the best Thomas parody ever made because it wasn’t made for fun, or for money, or for laughs, it was made to shine light on a real problem in today’s world that needs to be solved.
I mean, it WAS made for laughs, in part; but, like all good works of satire, it’s making a statement as well.
Kinda funny how it’s similar to the actual series stories. Usually a lesson is underlined without being outright said.
Thank you john Oliver for making this amazing adult parody of Thomas. I have a feeling that UA-cam’s bots are going to mark this as “made for kids”
Nah, if they had swear words it won't be age restricted
I’ve seen some Thomas parody videos that have f bombs and they got marked made for kids anyway. For example Carson’s Henry and the F***ing Rain.

This is probably the best Thomas parody I've seen. The attention to detail with the models is absolutely stellar.
Best Thomas parody since Blow Some Steam
The best part of this parody, is how accurate the models and the visuals are to the classic model series👍
They don’t actually say but did they actually get the original models or did they have to make some for the parody because I could totally see John Oliver going the extra step of getting an actual Henry model used in the original show.
@@HitchcockJohnhe would have braged that they were the originals if they were.
Saw a comment somewhere else that it was indeed an original. A guy sold one, on ebay I think, and said the address was to the Last Week Tonight offices.
Henry actually looks like it might be original - the people and other cars are generic but are similar enough
The people are a bit modernized but otherwise definitely fit the style of the original show. I'm pretty sure that fire engine is new but it definitely looks like it wouldn't be out of place in the series.@@jwace
I like that of all things, they got an original shape model for Henry. They could've just gotten his modern, post Flying Kipper look, or a more modern toy generally. Instead, they took the attention to detail to get the original shape to match the clips. That's fucking amazing
Glad to hear Jackie Daytona, real human bartender doing the narration.
For how much John Oliver stated that Thomas was a dark show, the audience laughing at stuff was arguably more sadistic, but hey, it got a chuckle out of me so who cares :>
But fr i cannot believe the ammount of effort that was put into this.
Really shows that live action models can still do wonders in this day and age
I still can't believe they got clearance To make this parody without getting sued. I just don't know how
It's a parody. You can't sue for a parody
@@realsupernova222 While I believe in this case it'd be found as fair use, you absolutely can be sued for parody. You can be sued for anything, doesn't mean the litigant will win, but when it comes to parodies they really can win if you're using copyrighted material to make fun of something else than the copyrighted material.
Thomas the Tank Engine, a quaint kids show about trains, is being juxtaposed with very serious adult matters also about trains, while making a bit of fun at the tropes of the show at the same time.
Had somebody used Thomas the Tank Engine to just make fart jokes or something similarly banal, with no greater meaning and with no real jokes aimed at the themes and tropes of Thomas, it could have been considered a parody but would have be much more vulnerable to lawsuits on copyright grounds.
This is a very general statement, focusing on American copyright law. Other countries have entirely different parody allowances in their copyright laws, the UK for example has an almost anything goes attitude in terms of using copyrighted materials to make new jokes, except for 'hateful' or 'discriminatory' content in parodies.
Never thought we'd get another Thomas parody.
I love that this is both a comment on the current state of railroads and also an amazing thomas parody
everyone, Thomas parodies are back
Message/Moral: End Precision Scheduled Railroading, and re-regulate all railroads i.e. limit freight train lengths so that passenger trains can have the right of way.
I always call Precision Scheduled Railroading “Pretty Shitty Railroading”
This was incredible!
Hey Victor! Didn’t expect you to pop up!
Wait, did my summoning spell work? 😮
VICTOR!?
Bro is luckier than anyone
Something tells me that he’s gonna recreate this but with a twist.
Thank you for making this! As an adult who grew up with Thomas, this really cracked me up and captures the feel of the classic series quite well.
Thomas parodies have returned
I know this is the version of "The Sad Story of Henry" but this is really funny and hilarious😆especially with the Fat Controller as the greedy villain .
Spam?
Wow, just... Wow. I honestly don't know what to say about this, nor about the ending. I wonder how Britt Allcroft would react to this. 😦
Personally, I think John Oliver would make a pretty good voice actor for Stepney the "Bluebell" Engine in the original CGI Thomas & Friends series.
Impressed.
@@williamhumes7332 I like the classic model style of the original Thomas series, but the part of the children's hospital burning down was little too extreme, and the freight cars that Henry was pulling were American rolling stock and not British Railway, like the Troublesome Trucks. Henry may be a big and strong engine, but even he would know that's impossible to pull a goods train THAT long.
@@gradynaylor959or as the thin controller
@@gradynaylor959its called a parody for a reason. This was made both as satire and to show what corporate greed would eventualy leads to through a popular media. This was a representation of the american railroading in a nutshell. Atleast try to understand that before nerding out all on everything.
@@rafidhiyaulhaq1107 I understand now. It was just my first time seeing this and knowing about the long train scheme in the US.
Bachmann should release old shape henry
The Henry Model is amazing. Lionel needs to take notes.
Why The Fuck Do I Have This Feeling The Team Behind Project Tigermoth Helped With This
Same lol
Although this spoof is S1 based, it has some S5 elements and Henry's faces are based on their TATMR-S7 looks.
It’s kinda cool that we get to see the behind the scenes of this.
I fvcking love Matt Berry 😍
Hilariously, the actual show features two different characters that are also named Oliver. I wonder if a writer was grumbling about not being able to use that in the actual short.
Absolutely love it. Now how the heck did they make a Henry in O Guage?
The messed up story of Henry told by Matt Berry.
3:09 Sodor Fallout be like
I know it's a parody, but it feels weird to hear trucks being called "cars", brake vans being called "caboose" and engine drivers called "engineers" (and no mention of the firemen) coming from a british voice
It’s a satire of US freight train policy so I can suspend disbelief that much.
@@francofan100 oh, right.
Sir Topham Hat is basically Dr Beeching 😂
This. Is. INCREDIBLE!
Project Tiger Moth is so back
A downside of free speech is that means foreigners can have opinions and commentaries about other countries. Normally, I don't care for hearing what a Brit has to say about the political, educational or industrial state in America but seeing how peak quality this is, I'll allow it! This is the best Thomas parody since the shorts that were shown on Fast Forward! Mr. Oliver clearly knew what to do for this one!
I mean they’re both British
How is that a downside to freedom of speech? Cause they have different opinions than you? You just sound like a major hypocrite
@@daltongalloway Perhaps I could have worded that better. In the Dangerous Freedom stance from Thomas Jefferson, no one is going to agree on everything. My stance right now is that how a foreigner views a country they do not reside in is something that is not worth listening to. My opinion on that may change or it may not. I'm willing to see how well this will age. Also, every person will be a hypocrite at some point in their life. That's just being human.
@@lukechristmas3951 no there is a difference between naturally being a hypocrite and purposefully being one. You just don’t think it’s a valuable opinion because it does not agree with your own.
@@daltongalloway If that's what you think, then alright. I'll admit, I'm not someone who watches John Oliver's show and have no current interest to. I'll take this as food for thought.
Project tiger moth episode 2: henry the bomb train
3:05
Henry:Me and my big mouth…..
This NEEDS to be a part of the lore of the island of Sodor
Fr but it would make more sense with Murdoch instead
Or Gordon, or even Hank or Sam.
No. Janes is more appropriate.
I love the models on this parody 😂
Well………..There goes that whole town😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
that henry model looks good
Am I the only one who noticed Henry was in his new shape but has his old shape firebox?
Love the model work and music. But most of all how the parody ends as a homage (and recycled footage of) Henry in the tunnel. Going as far as ending with the same quote.
I figured Matt Berry was the narator😂 I got confirmation when he said his caboose was loose
So this is what a complete series of project tiger-moth will look like? Also I’m assuming that the ho model was a Bachmann one, was the Gauge One style model was customised from a Lionel engine of some kind?
Yeah I think it was made from a Lionel engine
thomas the chav engine and blow some steam are crying in the corner rn
they use both HO and O gauge for different shots
And N scale!
@@milkythomas9029 it’s like fantastic Mr fox they make different scales for different shots

Matt berry on narration. Brilliant
it seems like henry has he's old shape and new shape untill you get to see the n scale henry and at 2:21 it looks like he's tender is a green annie/coach
3:15 I think you meant "Cinders and ashes!"
ha
A missed opportunity
2:34 😂
It sounds like Matt Berry narrating
It is
All it needs is some cyber goths dancing to the theme song over the end credits and it will be perfect.
Henry is a locomotive, not a train. Seriously, what is it with people calling locos" trains?
Actually, Henry is an engine
@@Mattcai2004 true fact
Fr trains are the things the engines pull idk what people are thinking
This entire segment was using American terminology, which I can excuse since this is mocking modern American freight train policies.
We need more of these thomas parodies haha
The narrator sounds like David Bowie
I noticed some Bessemer and Lake Erie ore cars
wish they credited who made it
This is a great parody and all
But this is absolutely something that Lazslo Cravensworth would make for children’s TV
🚂 *oh SHIT*
Did they get a thomas fan to make the music?😂
I wouldn’t put it past them to commission SudrianAfro for music.
3:15 When I find Percy dead Thomas adds:
Imagine if they got Ringo to narrate.
George is probably the better choice
@@YeomasBros.2008 ………George is dead, and was never the narrator of Thomas the Tank Engine.
@@Mr.E723 yes, George Carlin was the narrator look it up
@@YeomasBros.2008Think he was thinking of George Harrison.

I wonder if people know the part with Henry being sealed in a tunnel actually happened in the show
Without the american railcars & third rail and i wouldnt notice this was a parody lol

This gonna be a trend among the thomas and friends remake just like blow some steam
