    I was an Infantryman, light Infantry and Mechanized. Pack your items in clear zip lock sandwich bags and use till they wear out. For your main compartment and sleep system, use those Contractor grade waste bags which are black. Again use till they wear out. All typically purchased in bulk are cheap and the zip lock bags allow you to "see" the items so you can easily find at night, under tactical conditions. If done right, your items will be waterproof and can use your pack/ ruck for water crissings. Spent many years using this system so I know it works. Cheers

    Yeah, this is a thru hikers trick, I use it for all the reasons you said, although I have 4 dedicated cotton zipper bags that are thin an very light an are marked with a Sharpie as to what's in them. Another point is to put masking tape on the heavy duty Ziploc an write in Sharpie as to what there for, an the contents of each one, just an idea. Also a 55 gal trash bag inside of the ruck keeps everything dry with the contents inside, way lighter than old school ruck bags or dry bags an holds more to boot. Thx for the vid

    I take the heavy mill Plastic bags and go around the outside edges with the heavy duty clear Gorilla tape. This really makes the seems stronger and will keep them from busting / spitting apart at the seems. The smaller ones I tape up the hole bag if I need to carry something heavy in them. I have loaded lose freedom seeds up in them and they hold up well.

    My edc pack is about 30ish pounds. I'm using Kifaru zip bags and just reorganized it two day ago. I added some light weight clothes and could barely get it zipped. My pack is a Kifaru Antero and it's great. Currently running an admin pouch mollied to the outside and will probably keep that because that's where the g19, 2 extra mags and SF flashlight ride. Definitely going to go through it again today thanks to this vid. Thanks PA!

    • @PreparedAirman
      @PreparedAirman  3 роки тому +3

      Looking at the kifaru Antero bag its a 24liter pack that weights 3.15lbs. Not saying its a bad pack by any means but if you compare it to a Hyperlite mountain Southwest bag they are 54 liters and weights 1.98lbs.
      Your gaining doubling the space for 1.2lbs less at the same price point, And it's fully waterproof.
      Just a recommendation at the end of they day no one is "wrong" do what makes you happy and comfortable 😁

    Cutting weight by cutting bags is a big deal. Glad you found out. Decent ziplocs save tons of weight and as you said, you can *see* what you're messing with. Great insightful video for those that hadn't figured it out yet, and don't want to carry piles of excess weight for no good reason.

    I’m a former infantryman and current thru-hiker. I hiked the AT in 2019, and the Pinhoti in Feb of 2021. I mention that to show I have experience in both a tactical and civilian backgrounds in this area. THIS MAN IS SPEAKING TRUTH!
    I leave in two weeks to sobo the Arizona trail. With 6 days of food, and 2 liters of water, my weight is 22 lbs. Base weight is 10 lbs. (Usually 9, but carrying an extra pound of gear to increase my water capacity to 6 liters for long carries across the desert.)

    This is awesome! I have the super lightweight stuff for my main treks and EDC stuff. The only exception I have is my chest kit. I want something very tough and rugged and reliable should I get in to an emergency or for search and rescue. Other than this one thing, all my organization bags and pack are extremely lightweight. My last trek, with food and water, was only about 25 pounds for three days and nights.

    Great video and yes, please do more as you have suggested.
    The point that I am taking away from this video is that I am a box person.
    My love of MOLLE comes from my OCD, so now I must accept that I must adapt and find a middle ground between having different bags attached on the outside of my pack for quick access and having one big pack with everything thrown in willie-nillie.
    Also, your approach is more gray-man as well.

    • @PreparedAirman
      @PreparedAirman  3 роки тому

      It's definitely a balance. It is annoying to pull everything out of your bag if you need something in the bottom of your bag but the weight savings makes up for it. Plus I put more used items towards the top for easy access.

      Or repurpose.. They can make great kit for the range, or for vehicle storage of essentials. I use smaller pouch for walking trails at my house (and light maintenance), using them as tool bags and organizers, and even for stuff like gathering berries and mushrooms. Weight only becomes an issue when you need to be light.
      About the only thing I kit like that anymore is trauma stuff and magazines. Everything else is in ziplocks or cheap dry bags. If you don't need to get to it in a HURRY does it need to be that organized anyways?

    On one hand, you lose weight, but sacrifice the durability.
    On other hand you add weight, but add durability and multi use.

    • @PreparedAirman
