I've lived in Ireland for nearly 7 years. I love the country and the people so much. Hozier has a beautiful way of bottling the essence of a forgotten Irish culture that is deeply connected to nature and fascinated with death and decay.
I find it somewhat ironic though, that even though people often imagine him as a forest spirit, Ireland is completely devoid of natural or ancient forests!
Shockingly Ireland was robbed so bare that at one point only 1% of it was covered in trees. Things improved marginally and now forest cover is at 11%, but most of these forests are monocultures and offer absolutely no refuge or benefit for biodiversity!
Compare that to a country like Germany where about 30-40% of the country is covered in forests.
It's even more sad, when you consider that trees have historically been incredibly spiritually and culturally meaningful, so much so that cutting down an oak tree was a crime comparable to murder in the past!
I think it would be beautiful if people who connect with his music, would help with regenerating Irish nature. I keep thinking Hozier should use some of his wealth to restore Ireland natural rain forests!! It would be a beautiful legacy. Imagine walking though a young forest that was born out of a shared appreciation for the feelings his music evokes in us!
Oh how lovely to have my comment pinned! If anyone is interested in reforesting organizations in Ireland, I'd recommend Hometree Ireland, Reforest Nation, or the Wolfgang Reforest Project!
Do NOT support Coillte! They are a greenwashing monoculture producing organization!
Also, if you're interested in planting trees in general, switching your search engine from Google to Ecosia could be another really easy thing to do, which could create some good! They don't support projects in Ireland yet, but in many other countries!

A story I saw a while ago that really made me really happy was about an old irish farmer, who turned his 40 acres of farmland into native woodland! He did so to leave a legacy and to be buried on his land when his time comes! It's called the Martin Neary Woodland Park! Is there a better way to be laid to rest than in a forest that you planted for future generations to enjoy?
In other AMAZING NEWS Hometree Ireland just announced The Wild Atlantic Rainforest Project!
They plan to transform 4000 acres (!!) into wild woodland!
Also a loud voice in Ireland for a positive change has been Eoghan Daltun, who is one of the few people who manages a healthy woodland in Ireland! He recently published a book called An Irish Atlantic Rainforest. I recommend looking him up as he shares some beautiful photos of what a real Irish tempered rain forest should look like!

Hozier is a sort of cross between a Celtic bard and Orpheus. His often nature-centric lyrics are reminiscent of the former while the latter manifests itself in the magic of his voice, which causes all who hear it to stop and listen intently, hearts stirring.

He actually sings about mythology so often in his songs. Including the story of orpheus in the beginning of his song "Talk" Whe I realized he was singing about is I was like HELL YEAH

Just as Hozier writes songfic about mythology, so too do his listeners mythologize him back like this, but taking themselves along for the ride. It's a whole new level of art imitating life, a new kind of being drawn behind the veil by a spirit, and I'm here for it. :D
hozier fans are my favorite people. their minds are too complex for this world -- causing them to find comfort in dreams and desires. this is why they love hozier. he explains the way he sees beauty in the world and the people around him. which is something that they so desperately wish they could see.

I totally agree, it's so nice to scroll the comments and find like minded people, and speak my thoughts without given looks of insanity.
Hozier fans are the best people in the world. I went to his concert and the security had to be urging people to crowd around the entrance to get in faster because people were politely lined up in a straight file line in security and were moving too slowly. Inside the venue, only a handful of people were recording with their phones and most didn't to allow everyone behind them complete visibility of the stage.

It's like walking in the woods and then hearing someone singing from afar, you follow that voice and you see Hozier singing with the sunlight streaming through the trees - surrounded by the animals of nature as they listened to him utter poetry from his mouth. You too watched - amazed.
I once had a dream I met Hozier in a forest he had a stick and was looking at forest walls also there was a river made of music a greyhound was trying to lead me into and Hozier was like no don’t lol

something about hozier's music makes me so proud of my culture. i'm irish born and bred, but i never really felt connected with my country's roots until listening to his music. something about his melencholy + beautiful lyrical/melodical style, along with his absolutely godly voice makes me think of old ireland and the tales of celtic gods + young warriors, exploring lands new and old and meeting strange yet beautiful creatures on the way.
[edit] - this got way more poetic than i imagined, but i can't help but be completely transported by hozier's music!! i wish i was able to go back and listen to his music for the first time again.

After I discovered Hozier music couple years ago and learned where he's from I have been so passionate about your beautiful culture ever since. It has also became one of my biggest dreams, to visit Ireland. And even I'm from the Middle East, I feel somehow connected now to these old wonderful stories
i am not irish, i’m from the southern part of america. my triple great grandmother was irish, but she was only alive for a bit of my dads childhood, so sadly i never got to meet her. however, hozier also makes me feel connected.. just, to the earth. his music reminds me of sweet emotions as well as hurt and anger, but it’s all put so poetically. he’s truly moving. ireland seems so beautiful. something about that part of the world, europe, it calls to me. it’s a dream of mine to visit ireland and scotland. i feel like i would feel at home despite not being irish myself. i’m happy his music has made you feel connected to your culture, i can’t imagine how that feels.
I def think this applies to some of his songs. Others of his songs are way more blues and gospel inspired
let's call it the hozier effect :) i am not irish at all, nor celtic for that matter, but his music, as you said, transports me to a feeling or state of mind where i feel like i might've been celtic, a long long time ago.
there is something about his music that deeply resonates with who i am and it's fun to read the same for you in your comment.
The birds chirp as you walk through the brilliantly green forest, in awe and heart light as you walk barefooted on the soft moss, your spirit feeling full, you inhale deeply and exhale, the tension leaving your body. You walk for a while more before you hear a melody, mistaking it for the sound of the slight breeze in the trees and start to hum along as you continue walking. You walk for a while longer before realizing the music is getting louder. You finally see where it's coming from and your breath catches, the song changes and it's something that makes you feel like a kid again, the birds start trilling happily, even louder than before as they come to rest upon the trees around the mysterious musician, the man's calming voice carrying through the leaves and echoing into the forest pleasantly, you sit down quietly and lean against a tree to listen, content with remaining here for as long as the music and mysterious bard does.
This is utterly goregous. I clicked on this randomly, thinking it would be good background music to study to. Little did I know that I would be completely moved by this music. I feel so weirdly connected to it. Beautiful.

This is such a well curated playlist. As I was listening I imagined myself walking in a rainforest trying to get nearer to a waterfall. Behind the waterfall Hozier is singing. With each song I felt nearer and nearer to the waterfall. And when From Eden started playing it felt as if I am at the bottom of the waterfall and the music is the loudest. Such soul cleansing experience

I adore Hozier's music, and as a Pagan, his music has always hit home in a way that isn't very usual (Similar feeling from Avi Kaplan, I suggest y'all take a listen)
I absolutely LOVE this playlist/mix/experience. It's comforting and feels similar to laying in soft grass under the dappled shade of a tree with your hands tangled in your lover's, maybe turning over to just cuddle in the cool warmth too lost in each other and relaxing to notice the bugs.

Change is inevitable. You can't always control your circumstances, but you can rise to meet change to the best of your ability, with fortitude, kindness of heart, integrity and dignity.
Going into the forest sounds fun and all but not if you are paranoid and have dense senses specially towards your surroundings. My friend and I explored a forest together a couple of times, but we had a particularly bad experience one day. We'd usually stay on trails but that day, we decided to go deeper. Being in an unfamiliar place she got anxious and i was unfamiliar with the wild life in it. A big spider crawled unto my back and i didn't even noticed until i saw it coming out if my shoulder, there were holes all around too. And we got to see a moose, who knew they were giants? But apparently you're not supposed to luck eyes with one. My friend had to drag me into hiding because i was just standing there like an idiot staring at the moose. It got annoying how she was always on edge and with her "What ifs". The last straw was when she started thinking that something was watching us and that there was definitely another person there with us. Lmao i got mad and scared at that point so I got us out of there before she starts seeing something that was clearly not there. So lesson learned lol, if you decide to go in a stroll in the forest, stay in the trails and don't bring your paranoid friend into a new path.

This reminds me of the summer's I'd spend with my uncle, we'd fish, swim, and we even made a makeshift raft out of old barrel's once. It reminds me of when I was younger and innocent, and the times where I didn't know how hard the world is.
