The blue ray player probably wouldn't read the game
I'm pretty sure the original drive reads the disc in a specific way (that regular drives ignore) as a part of the copy protection so even if it could read the disc properly it would probably still not work as it would be unable to perform the authenticity check that's required by the xbox.

I agree. I was only able to see what the codes were by 1: Using my laptop with touchscreen and 4K 2: Running the video at 4K at 0.25 speed and 3: Zooming into the webpage before it scaled and took a screenshot. They were all redeemed, btw.

Can't. Drives that come in systems are programed to that board. Any drive board wont work.

They did technically make it cheaper, that's the entire point. $250 MSRP vs $300 MSRP. Problem is they have so many "deals" going on for $200-250 for the regular S, the All-Digital being sold at full retail is more expensive. It does also come with 3 games instead of 1. Just not great ones.

@@patrickbarker2492 By keeping the same form factor they don't have to redo the entire manufacturing process. They just have to skip cutting the hole in tbe faceplate. A Blu-ray drive costs about $50, hence a $50 price drop. You can't expect them to change their entire manufacturing process AND remove a $50 part AND drop the price by $100. That's ludacris.
@@brandonjohnson4121 except it's a 4k bluray drive that cost more than $50 in brick and mortar retail($100). To be fair you can find some as cheap as $62 on Amazon and you cant play videogames in 4k. I'm just stating that the value doesn't necessarily add up
@@coolroxas That's retail pricing which is entirely different than direct wholesale pricing. Not even remotely comparable. You also can't play anything even close to 4k games on the Xbox One S. It rarely even hits 1080p.

Judging by the internals, the thing is basically an Xbox One S with the disc drive gutted out. It'd actually be cheaper if I bought a regular Xbox One S and took out the disc drive myself (or just ignored it).

Gamestop is like a pawnshop and there stock has dropped significantly in the past few years due to digital games. I hope they go out of business they buy games and console from kids for almost pennies on the dollar to resell way to inflated used. Compare prices on eBay vs. trade in value vs. buying it used from gamestop. It is awful it doesn't matter if the have to pay the tenant spot or employees. They are a corporation and if you didn't know this they make very little profit on new games and consoles. All off their profit is from used games and consoles, but now that I am older when ever I get a console I buy it new. I buy all digital games because I dont often play now. Did you know gamestop is required by law to have a pawnshop license? Did you know gamestop is raising the 15$ pro membership to 20$ and they are making points expire and they are changing the 10% preowned for pro to 5%? Screw them for screwing kids with their allowance money.
@@jclic2660 Well to be fair. GameStop is a business. All businesses need a profit to survive and pay bills. Like all businesses, they are allowed to raise prices on things like the pro membership. I don't blame them at all. People have a choice if they want to go to GameStop or not to buy/sell things. People also have a choice to buy/sell from a website like eBay if they believe they are getting ripped off from GameStop.
Digital only just means no competition on price. No 2nd hand trading, no sales, just full price games for life. It's a terrible choice for anyone who doesn't just play new releases

It's disappointing that they did not use that second SATA port for a second drive.
Even if the system firmware refuses to recognize it, I'll bet you could get some kind of interposer made (along the same lines as a SATASAS interposer that some enterprise systems need) in order to get around the custom pinout he mentioned.

This console doesn't make any sense to exist. Microstoft would have priced this for 150-180$ to make costumers buy this.
It will be $199 in short order. The regular S is supposed to be $299 but there are plenty of deals for much less. Seems like people are intentionally dense these days.
Theses something beautiful about going to gamestop or Best Buy, purchasing a hard copy. Taking it out the plastic, reading the information on the toilet, then putting the disc in the system to play. It's ok to have something still be special

With this console launching, Microsoft is actually going to launch a "Disk-to-Digital" program this year. From what I have read of it, you will be able to take your physical games into a store (a microsoft authorized store) turn in your physical copy of a game and then get a digital download code. Granted, you will have to redownload the game, but it is cool that Microsoft is at least trying to make it work.
This was MS plan when the ONE was revealed but no one liked the idea, because you can't sell or buy used games anymore
Kacey Howell no you don't have to re download physical copies, if the games are installed from disc and you purchase a digital version from the store it just patches it in mere seconds, I did that with Gta v and sunset overdrive.
Making it the same size is such a missed opportunity. Also, if it's not instantly on sale for $149-$179 don't get why this exists.

This won't sell well. Why would you save just $50 to then not be able to play any of your friends game disks or a BluRay... 1 brand new AAA game costs more than what you're saving. Talk about ruining the value of a console.
They probably look at it as "Well a lot of people buy digital anyway. Plus Game Pass and all" But then you're locked into Digital and while they do go on sale from time to time a LOT of them are still full price. Whereas you can get physical cheaper most of the time these days.
I think it'll have it's use by some people, but it's not going to set the world on fire. And it honestly isn't meant to. I guess they just want the choice out there.

I definitely think this is a tactic by microsoft to make more money through their online stores, instead of people going to retail stores and buying games second hand, or at heavily discounted amounts. In the long term, it would still be cheaper for people to buy the original version...
Well of course it is. Once the digital stores are the only places where you can buy games for your console expect prices to reflect that stronger position in the market. Right now they have to do frequent and good sales to lure people in (and it's working).
Later on it'll be renting for the plebs and the ones that want to semi-"own" their games will pay a pretty premium.

@@jsward96 I am using a micro stick m2 with it, but its only 1gb. The thing is, I am able to run the games which were on the internal storage (installed before I fuvked it up), but I can't delete them, move them or save their progress.
1gb is really small, but the M2s are really expensive. The MicroSD mod is out of question for me as well. Really stuck in this situation. Guess the only option is to get a bigger M2 card from AliExpress or something.
Other than the inability to format the PSP and all, it runs fine.

Definitely not the Xbox for the Philippine Xbox players. Our internet is as shit as you can think of here so we stick with physical games (we only think of the updates and that's it). Xbox going discless is a huge oopsie.

One thing a lot aren't taking into account with this version of the Xbox is that it's a popular model for parents buying them for their young kids, as all Digital means no discs for them to break.
They could of put a beefy heatsink in it and overclocked it 10%
Games made for the S is already made for current hardware. Overclocking won't make an improvement unless if there's no FPS limiter. Plus developers have to update their games which is already more effort aside from making their games look better for the One X.
