You mention Bruce Springsteen: When Jackson had his first album out and was playing live shows, Bruce didn’t have a record deal and was unknown, but he was friends with Jackson, so he (Jackson) would let Bruce come on stage to sing a song or two to get some exposure. Later, they would perform together at the No Nukes concert.
One if the best song lines ever " I'm gonna be a happy idiot and struggle for the legal tender where the ads take aim and they their claim to the heart and the soul of the spender and believe in whatever may lie in those things that money can by though true love could have been a contender" he said once that this song isn't so much about him as a group of people he knew who traded security in place of dreams that they had and went for a type of lifestyle they saw others succeeding at. He said there's a little if the pretender in him
I’ve always loved this song. The studio version is great. It’s nice to see JB along with CS&N. Their harmonies add a beautiful layer to this beautiful tune. 🌺✌️
Yes, this is Jackson Brownes song, and the name of a whole album. His voice sounds just as perfect as years ago. Its about when we were young, all the people that are on stage too, there were so many dreams about changing the world, and then we, most of us, had to surrender to the system, if we wanted to raise a family, rent needs to be paid, and we forgot or were unable to do what we dreamed of. This song makes me cry, today, because I just retired a few days ago, and was thinking of how much I sacrificed, like the closeness of family and friends so I could pay my bills, and now, they are doing the same, and dont have time, like I now do.... and how terribly sad it all is. Thank you for listening and reacting. Considering it is your first time listening, you are spot on.
Jackson Browne is Awesome Ballad Storyteller. The Pretender Started out Young n Strong Struggling So Hard for money he didn't Get time out for a Love life and Family. The Year pass him by and his hopes n Dreams Sail out of Sight. He's Pretending he's OK but Now he's old n Lonely Still Pretending to be happy n going on with life
Friends way back in the Laurel Canyon days with Cass Elliott, some of the to be Eagles and many others. Jackson is the real deal. Very authentic. Love him and he's puts on a really good concert himself. Great LP version too.
Great song. You should listen to the studio version. I have been a huge Jackson Browne fan since I was in college. I totally love all his albums up until Lawyers in Love. Other great songs by Jackson include Doctor My Eyes, Rock Me on the Water, These Days, Ready or Not, Fountain of Sorrow, Before the Deluge, Late for the Sky, For a Dancer, The Fuse, Disco Apocalypse, That Girl Could Sing, Boulevard and many more.
Great observations Harry! Yes, the joys and disappointments of life. Only as we get older do we realize that the gifts of youth are sometimes squandered. And how we wish we had that youth back, but with our current wisdom!
I absolutely love the lyrics "I'm gonna find me a girl to show me what laughter means, and we'll fill in the missing colors of our paint by number dreams" Brilliant.
I was working in a hotel bar in 1981 and Jackson walked in. He is soft spoken, great listner and conversationalist. It was a night I will always remember.
Maybe my favorite Jackson Browne song. For those of the hippie generation who started out with good intentions. Not so much a fan of this version. I agree the Crosby Nash harmonies get in the way a bit. I prefer the studio. Maybe give it a lesson. I also like his Everyman and These Days and I DThought I Was a Chile, which was covered beautifully by Bonnie Raitt. All from For Everyman album.
Great collaboration. Jackson Browne has some iconic songs and his smokey voice (wonderful adjective for him) feels like a smooth well worn but comfortable glove. Some really nice traveling songs.
@@davebzen795 I had his album 'Running On Empty' on cassette (yeah, before CDs). Played it for all my trips from Gainesville to the beach at Flagler to surf. Loved it!
"Smokey" is spot on. And your analysis about the song's meaning is also spot on. Bruce Springsteen inducted Jackson Browne into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. They are good friends. He has also been good friends and co-wrote with the Eagles. The lyrics on this song are just so deep, touching, and sad. He is a true poet. He was the sound track of my high school years. Jackson Browne wrote his first incredibly deep song at the age of 16. He has been writing songs every since. He is still going strong at 73 years old! I like your energy and wisdom so I subcribed. :)
Yes, go listen to the studio version. There may be a reason for YT reactors play so many live versions. But the artists go into the studio and spend months getting their music to sound exactly the way that they want it to be heard, and there's definitely a reason for that.
The TV show you are thinking of is "Cannon", a rotund detective who nevertheless ran down some young, lean criminals which I always found comical when it happened.
Beautiful. Great collaboration of some great talent. Always love the harmonies of CSNandY🇨🇦. Great reaction Harri. [For The Love of Money...The Ojays.] Thanks Harri and David. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Some of these Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame performances are the best. Check out Bruce Springsteen with Tom Morello performance of The Ghost Of Tom Joad at the RRHOF.
You should check out the Jackson Browne song that Don Henley of The Eagles called the most beautiful song ever written. It’s titled “Late For The Sky”. ✌🏼😎
If I'm not mistaken, Jackson + CSN have been friends since the Laurel Canyon days pre-Woodstock. Funny about the David Crosby comment because whenever I see him he has the biggest smile on his face for a fellow performer. (Perhaps I'll offer up another example with my pick next month.) Great 2 picks tonight, DaveBZen ... nothing like great Live performances of great songs by great musicians/singers. Good reaction Harri.
Thank you very much. You are not mistaken at all in your comments. Laurel Canyon spawned so many great artists and groups. Yes, Harri, you did a fine review.

The detective series, could it be A touch of Frost? I don't remember what car was in it, but googling it would appear it was a Volvo 240 DL. The actor David Jason played Jack Frost.

I agree to listen to the studio version of this one .. but I would suggest with the lyrics. JUST to make sure how you feel about the meaning. (which I think you are pretty spot on) but to make sure .. or maybe like the meaning even more.
Hey Harri, I don't know if you still look at these older posts. I'm still trying to play catch up. I love watching you listen to these great songs for the first time. I wanted to give you a suggestion. It is a Jackson Browne song so that's why im putting it here. This song is not one of his many hits. But, it is a beautiful one with a strong message that is still relevant today. This version is from his concert in 1994 with Crosby Stills & Nash and the version is exquisite. The song is "Lives In The Balance". Please consider a listen, Thanks. ua-cam.com/video/VPFdbKLUmQk/v-deo.html

It IS a Jackson Browne song. Check out the BBC performance with just his voice and a piano. MUCH better version than this. On a side note, Browne was roommates with Gregg Allman in Los Angeles, and Gregg recorded his "Laid Back" album with two of Browne's songs: "These Days" and "All My Friends." I would like to invite you to be the first to react to Gregg's solo stuff, especially "Turn On Your Lovelight" on his Gregg Allman Tour Live at Carnegie Hall.

Yes... Give a listen to the studio version as well as ANY other Jackson Browne songs from any of his albums. He really is a poet.
He really is the poet. Dylan gets all the kudos.
Jackson Browne is magic and his songs are poetry. The dark glasses are representative of pretending. I so love his work.
Jackson has so many great songs: "Doctor, My Eyes," "Runnin' on Empty," "Somebody's Baby," and "Late for the Sky," among others.
I love For A Dancer....amazing song.... ;-)

many of which were written very young, even before he was 20 if I’m not mistaken
It is Jackson’s song, Crosby and Nash sing backup on the album as well. It’s one of my favorite songs and this was a lovely version.
You have stumbled on a real phenomenon. Try “late for the sky”, “fountain of sorrow”, “for a dancer”. They are all astounding.
