    Fun fact from France : when the movie started being promoted in France, they literally translated the poster tags "She's everything./ He's just Ken." to french, but the thing is, Ken in french, aside from being the doll's name, is also a slang word that means to fuck, so all over the country, there were posters that basically read "She can do everything./ He's just about fucking." ("Elle peut tout faire/ Lui, c'est just Ken.") Which was VERY funny to see plastered absolutely everywhere, and kinda ended up unintentionally building even more hype about it because the complete translation fail made people talk about it even more here. (I like to think nobody in the french marketing team thought about it and the double entendre really just flew right over their head)

    • @carolmoura142
      @carolmoura142 Рік тому +30

      in Brazil, Ken sounds like "quem" which means "who", so the posters were like "She's everything. He's just who" (it wasnt written "quem" but the way we read it makes the exact sound) and that's funny cuz it kinda matches Ken's plot of discovering who he is

    There’s a very important line when the barbies retake Barbieland, where yhe narrator said that maybe someday Ken will have as much influence in Barbieland as women do in the real world which is SUCH A HARD-HITTER. Ouch.
    You have to understand that Barbieland is just the fantasyland of little girls. Of course the main characters there will be women. And that’s as it should be. Girls should get to be the main characters in their own dreams, for heaven’s sake. Especially since, as Barbie found out, the real world is much more restricted. The experience she had entering the Real World, getting objectified, really reminded me of what it was like to go through puberty. Just horrifying to go from being seen as a child to being ogled by grown men within a few short years. Extremely traumatic.

    So the first half of the film, kinda plays out like we, as kids used to play Barbie. That is why the shower isnt pouring water or why she walks on the water, etc. It was actually pretty hilarious to see because it is literally how I used to play. Also I can say that almost all children in this theatre did not really understood anything and got bored halfway through, while the parents and young adults actually loved it, as did I. So I wouldnt necessarily say that this film is for children, as most just dont understand the message yet.

    I didn’t understand the end either on my first watch, but now I realize that the ending where she goes to the gyno was well thought about in my opinion.. because after such a serious movie it allows for the movie to end on lighthearted comedic relief, while simultaneously making the decision to NOT have her go to any job interview because then she would’ve been seen as (for example) Doctor Barbie if she wanted to become a doctor. She became human, acquired a vagina, and also acquired CHOICE which is a hugggeee topic for the women of today, the fact that she wasn’t at a job symbolized that she’s just a living woman now, but with that she’s she has the world at her disposal, like the vision of Barbie dolls themselves.. women can do anything they set their mind to because they have opportunity even though this world makes it hard… so yeah, incredibly serious topics subtlety hinted at through the much more palatable taste of good comedic relief.

    I think women hating on women is a rare occasion. Like 1 out of a billion chance. Men hate on women a significant amount more. I can guarantee you that a women is more forgiving on men's looks than men on women's looks. Saying that "women hate women more" is kind of ignorant when women experience more hate and degrading from men. A "man" (more like boy) negatively commented on how I look like I'm 30 (I'm 17) because I said how someone dating a 18 year looked (and is) almost 30. All the women replied to him defending me. I've never been told by a women that I look like I'm 30 or should lose weight to look prettier. I've been complemented on multiple occasions. I've also had a man comment on one of my TikTok videos (which I deleted) hating on me for my looks. So in regard of all I've just said no, men are more hateful towards women than women themselves. I'm not one of the best looking people, I can say that, so when I see all these beautiful women ( who are literally so stunning, keep doing what you're doing girly) with cute guys, I'm so afraid that I won't get a boyfriend because of how I look. But, maybe that's just me.

    I'm not talking about you, but certain people who say this movie is about hating men or anti-motherhood either didn't get it or have not seen it. It's a commentary about how women are viewed as less than in the real world yes. But the message is not that women are superior to men, it's that we're equal and each have a purpose. Barbie doesn't just exist to look good and Ken doesn't just exist to be by Barbie's side. They are worthy of happiness and love as individuals.
    And America Ferrera's character specifically says that it's okay to "just" be a mum. You don't have to have a career or choose between a career and being a mum. Plus the pregnant Barbie was a real Barbie that was discontinued because people thought the idea of it was funny seeing as she didn't have a vagina.
    Speaking of, the ending with her going to the gynecologist, now that she has a vagina, is actually genius.

    I'll go against the grain and say I understand where you're coming from with the 'women hate women' thing, it's not about violence, it's about judgemental expectations, different kind of hate. it's like that line of mean girls when they point out that the girls keep calling each other bitches and sluts

    • @meganjones5887

    • @enexius67
      @enexius67 Рік тому

      I agree. I didn’t take their comment to heart because it’s true to an extent. It was the type of comment that made me squint, but I moved on cause I know that they’re men and they just can’t understand what it’s like to be a women.
      The hate that comes from a man hurts, but it’s almost expected nowadays. In the age of Andrew Tate’s and Jordan Peterson’s, and the government (not to exclude the misogyny, sexism, and harassment we get from men as well).
      When a woman (or in my experience, a mean girl) is tearing down another woman, it’s another type of hurt. We should be supporting each other, but instead we’re tearing each other down within our own insecurities, jealousies, and being just judgmental. It’s different for everybody for sure, and I’m in the rare group of women who feel insecure around other women because 7/10 times I’ve been judged and treated poorly just because I have different interests from them.

    20:47 I think with growing up skipper it was supposed to be ab out a teenage girls body suddenly changing, but either people felt uncomfortable by thinking about a young girl going through puberty, or people felt that it wasn't represented well.
    Earring Magic Ken was pulled for being more popular around gay men then young girls, Sugar Daddy Ken - either the name made them feel uncomfortable, or no-one read the box, because I'm pretty sure that the box explained that his dog's name was Sugar and that he was her daddy.
