It really is a shame that you didn’t seem to understand that that the movie was about feminism and kenism because for their entire existence the kens were treated very poorly. And I also want to point out the issue with the ending that if I remember correctly she says I can’t let you choose it without seeing what it’s like but bro literally didn’t show her anything bad.

The movie has a good point about feminism (altough very basic, i guess that's still what we need) but we shouldn't forget the consumerism/capitalism that barbie was always about too. You were right when you said "this feels like a commercial" in the beginning. It is a commercial and marttell knows damn well that being selfaware about their flaws is the best advertisement they can get to sell more and not change anything..

Yeah, Greta said Margot cracked up at weird stuff that Ryan would do and ruined takes all the time. Ken putting on two pairs of sunglasses was a random Ryan thing that ended up in the movie. Greta said they’d have to cut away from Margot frames before she broke and if you watch closely you can see her start to fall apart all over the movie.

fun fact: the Barbie "Midge" was actually a real Barbie that was discontinued b/c of worries about glorifying teen pregnancy. I remember her, you could open her stomach like a pop out, and a tiny baby would fit in there.

@@FoxyGuyHeretbh, i think i was too young to understand anything beyond how cool the mechanic was. it was interesting bc it had like a false double tummy so when you'd pop the baby out (or put back in).. you had to push a normal cut out shape of her stomach in for the baby, then pop the stomach on top where it could click (iirc).
thinking about it in hindsight.. it makes me wonder if there really was a statistical reason to worry about teen pregnancy correlating to a Barbie that i remember playing with when probably 5. idk, maybe weird, maybe a bit of an over exaggeration of Mattel. idk. i just thought it was a cool difference than other Barbies b/c of the mechanics.
@@sophie-yq5ft i don't have too much memory of her beyond just thinking it was a cool difference than other Barbies b/c it was just different. lol.. and i think the discontinuation mightve been a bit of a overexaggeration of Mattel bc Barbie's aren't typically played with by se*ually active teens. idk. i just know it never made me feel weird. i liked her too. you could put little polly pocket figures in there too! lol
I gave a guy at the skate rink a compliment on the color matching in his outfit one night, and he brought it up a few *months* later to tell me it made him so happy that someone noticed and said something cuz it’s something he takes pride in and feels no one notices. I unfortunately have to be careful when I do compliment men because of so many experiences where they immediately assumed I was trying to flirt and their whole demeanor changed. I want to be open and kind to everyone I meet, but it’s backfired so many times I don’t feel safe anymore. It’s a disappointing self-fulfilling prophecy for the dudes who think all women are either rude bitches or if we’re nice to them we must be “interested” - they sabotage themselves by changing the dynamic of a conversation as soon as you try to interact with them like a person and not treat them like “a guy that’s probably going to hit on me.” I don’t like being cold and straight-faced towards everyone I meet, I don’t like making assumptions about anyone based on the body they were born into, but I do have to be measured and reserved around most men until they show me they’re a safe person, which is extremely rare.

One time I commented on how thoughtful and nice a new coworker was, and he instantly started acting like I had a crush on him. It soured the budding friendship for a while because it made me so uncomfortable and I didn't even want to smile at him because I didn't want to fuel the rumors. I'm not usually out at work because homophobia sucks but I made it a point to come out to him as a lesbian so that I could escape the weirdness 😔😔
Kind of a weird strategy, but if you preface with “dude” or “bro,” guys are much less likely to take it as flirting (as confirmed by my guy friends). So something like, “Duuuude, I really like your tank top.” 😂

I’m as old as the first Barbie and loved this movie. It hit everything I’ve experienced over the years. Loved the flip on the traditional romcom. And loved the male actors for taking the roles knowing they might get flack for it. Loved the music, the sets, the dance scenes. All of it. I’m happy to see so many younger people embracing this movie.
The set design was freaking incredible. They made it look exactly like the old play sets I used to have. Also the costume design, I’m pretty sure I used to have those roller skating outfits
My (male) partner made an interesting point about Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie - before they took these roles, both of them were known for playing roles within the gender stereotypes. Gosling is the guy from Drive, and was essentially the Chad figure all men aspired to be (in the most toxic way possible, as he put it) - and Margot played very se-ualised roles like Harley Quinn. So for them to act in this movie is almost a response and a REJECTION of the stereotypes that they previously embodied; which just adds a whole other layer.
He actually said he didn't think the Ken storyline would work as well as it did if ANYONE other than Gosling had played that part.

As far back as the Victorian era, there were issues with European women stabbing men with hat pins (because the men were trying to SA them, and they were defending themselves) and instead of dealing with the SA problem, the governments decided to ban the hat pins that women were using to defend themselves. Because to them, that was the problem. Not the fact that women were being SA'd to the point where they needed to stab the men - the problem, in the government's eyes, was the stabbing.
Let's take a look at the real law.
Touching a butt cheek is not assault, sexual assault, or rape.
However, in some states including California, it can be classified as "Sexual Battery" and is a misdemeanor unless certain other conditions exist, none of which existed in tha scene.
So the guy who slapped Barbie's butt would be found guilty of Sexual Battery under California State Law if she presses charges and sufficient evidence can be presented.
However, punching somebody in the face is also Battery, which could be a misdemeanor or could be a felony. Generally in California the difference is whether the victim is a public servant (police officer, mailman, etc.) or whether the victim suffered "great bodily injury".
That second consideration is deliberately vague and often up to the victim and their lawyer to present justification, and then for the judge to decide.
Generally, it's not a good idea to commit a felony in response to a misdemeanor.
For example, if she broke the guy's nose and caused a concussion, two very real possible outcomes when punching a person in the face, this is likely felony assault and battery.
The guy gets a misdemeanor charge for slapping her butt (generally just a fine) but she goes to jail, potentially for a year or two.
Now, courts are interesting places.
Maybe her lawyer could bargain that down for provocation and lack of premeditation.
Also, for no good reason, courts and juries usually go very hard on male crimes against females but very soft on female crimes against males. It should not matter. None of the penal codes specify sex or gender in the definitions of the crimes or statutes for punishment, so judges and juries should treat all assault the same, regardless of what sex or gender the perpetrator and victim happen to be.
In short:
Barbie committed a crime. At a minimum, it's misdemeanor assault and battery. She will likely not be convicted or sent to jail because it was provoked and because she's a girl who hit a guy, fair or not.
But that is not for the arresting officer to decide - she needs to be arrested and booked so that proper legal procedure can be followed and a court date can be set.
The other guy committed a crime too: sexual battery.
We only see Barbie's booking and not the slapper guy because seeing his booking isn't funny and doesn't move the story in any way.
Barbie is really one of the best movies made in recent times, it’s funny, sad, with an incredible social criticism and perfect performances
34:25 EXACTLY, it couldn't be further from man-hating. Its anti-toxic behavior (which it included the women on) and anti-taking each other for granted. If anything, it's literally is about taking responsiblity for ourselves and how we treat each other AND how we have been treating OURSELVES.
I saw a commentary with a hypothesis about why some men disliked this movie so much. It's bc they think men are represented there as Ken, they see themselves in Ken! When Ken is more a representation of toxic masculinity and how patriarchy also hurts men. When in actuality, men are represented in the movie as Alan! Alan is unique and unproblematic and he have all the good qualities associated with positive masculinity. He's a true protector, he literally throws hands to protect women, knows when step away and how to be active part of the solution.
I was alos thinking about how men laugh at Ken. But Ken's role in Barbieland is to be treated as women do irl, which I've seen women realise way quicker than men!

When talking about feminism, this movie is very, very basic. Like, the most basic you can get. Very surface level. However, it was very important because surface level as it is, it's deeper than most movies I have seen about the topic. A pioneer, almost, in the ways it works about feminism, so explicitly. I really loved it.
yeah, I had two 9 year old girls in front of me with their mom when I saw it, there were a decent amount of kids there so it was a good move to go simple.

It's wild how much stupid fun this movie is and then how powerful it is at the same time. Like the Ken vs Ken fight and "I'm just Ken" song is my faaaaavorite part of this movie and it's such dumb fun, but then the social commentary is so important

Totally random but I agree with a pin on Pinterest that said the prop designer who made those rollerblades that look just like the silicone ones that came with Barbies but function as actual rollerblades deserves a freaking raise.

I went to this movie expecting frivolous nostalgia and fun and ended up crying like 4 times. The compliment thing- a lot of men will only be nice to women they want to sleep with, so they automatically assume if a woman is nice to him they want to sleep with him. It's easier to not compliment men than to deal with fending off advances and then anger for "leading him on" or "being a tease" or "playing games" or "giving mixed signals". Every time we compliment a random man, we have to be emotionally ready to deal with that ish as a possibility.
Fr, I mean personally I don't compliment anyone because I don't talk to anyone for the most part but some men really do be doing it to themselves. And it sucks because for the men who aren't like that, like my boyfriend for example, they won't see it as romantic they'll just see it as a compliment. But because of the guys who make it weird for women to compliment or for even compliments toward women from men, it's making everything just confusing and making everyone have to walk on eggshells. My boyfriend loves it when I compliment him or call him handsome or anything, so I like to do it a lot because he's always happy with being appreciated and showed love and care. It's men like him that suffer from the creeps.
And don't get me wrong, some women are also at fault for that. Some do be nice and flirty with men and give them mixed signals whether it's for them to be a tease or for them to get into the guys pants. And in turn that hurts the women genuinely being nice and friendly and just trying to compliment people.
Both genders are at fault at different sides of the spectrum. It's the men and women who make these trends and stereotypes who are basically what people think of when thinking men and women and it sucks. We need to normalise being human and just being good to each other. Normally. With no strings attached or underlying plans. Though I doubt we'll ever get that advanced mentally and emotionally because people are stupid, not everyone is the same or has that same mental capacity to understand that, and there will always be bad people in the world. I just hope that one day society will realise.

Um, there is a reason John Cena was playing Merman Ken. He had been up for the role of "Aquaman" but lost out to Jason Momoa. So it's an inside joke that he finally got to be the King of the Oceans.

It’s a profound meditation on identity and what it means to find your place in a world where your not valued or seen. To be a feminist is not to replace patriarchy with a matriarchy or vice versa but to be valued and seen as an equal, to be seen as an individual amongst the collective. To not be defined by our labels or be pressured into putting ourselves into a prepackaged box. Like you said this movie had no right being this deep but I’m glad it was. Every hater should go back and try and actually watch the movie, you might learn something about yourselves along the way.

Interesting. I found the scene superfluous. It did nothing for me emotionally. Yeah the old lady saying she knows she is beautiful is kinda funny. But who says „you’re beautiful“ to a random stranger? Yeah maybe it was supposed to emphasize the awe of aging vs the everlasting artificial beauty of Barbie, but meh. It was random and cringe. Although I like the movie there were several cringeworthy things in it that could have been left out. The speech for example.
I absolutely loved the Ken fighting scenes, Ken‘s song and the dance battle. That was absolutely awesome.

I have been so excited since they announced it was gonna be Gretta Gerwig. This is the absolute best version of the movie they could've made.

Lars and the Real Girl is one of my fave movies of all time. Definitely quieter than the action films, but really really good.

Amazing reaction! This movie is amazing. I found it so powerful and emotional while also just being hilarious and fun. It's so clever. And you're right, it's not anti-men, I found it to be very balanced social commentary, it's just honest and some people can't handle being faced with that so blatantly.
I feel like those who've never played with Barbies will not be able to fully appreciate all the easter eggs in this movie.

When I initially watched the movie I was a bit underwhelmed. My expectations were way too high. I thought the comedy would be a bit sharper. But I’ve so enjoyed your take on it. I appreciate how much the core themes resonated with you. A pleasure to watch.
Never go to any movie with high expectations.
I had zero interest in seeing this movie before it came out. Then I saw a trailer in the theater and the idea of them going to the real world piqued my interest. And when I would go see Oppenheimer and Dead Reckoning (over and over), there were so many people wearing pink in the lobby, and the box office numbers, it truly was a phenomenon. I saw it in its 4th weekend and was surprised how good it was and saw it a second time. Much better than I thought it would be.
STOP. I just REALIZED her name is Gloria! I'm not sure if there's any connection, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is one. Back in the 90s and even today, there were off-brand Barbie playsets with the Gloria brand. My mom would buy them for me at the swapmeets because we couldn't afford any of the Barbie playsets.
Her daughter is named Sasha, which is the name of the head Bratz doll, so I wouldn't be surprised if this were true! All her friends look like the other Bratz dolls. 😂

If you want to see a completely different side of Ryan Gosling as an actor I recommend Lars and the Real Girl. I watched it for a class and ended up completely charmed by it.

Such an epic film! So funny, so relevant, and so heartfelt. I love how it challenges the very real patriarchy that exists in the world while also showing the opposite would be just as bad and unfair. As a man, I think all men need to see this and learn a bit about themselves. As a son and a brother, I think all mothers and daughters also need to see this film that acknowledges the struggle for self-determination and equality all women face.
