- This is my first tryout with my 'new' Watkins Copicat.
It is a mint 1963 model completely untouched still with original valves, tape heads and one very careful owner before me :)
On the original recording of this song, the guitar tone is quite on the edge of breakup for a Shads number. So seeing as how the Copicat has a nice valve pre-amp stage, I dialled in just the right amount of grit.
Amp-wise I'm using a Vox AC4TV upgraded with a Weber 10 inch Alnico Blue Pup and a 12AT7 in the preamp stage instead of a 12AX7. This gives the amp a lot more clean headroom enabling you to drive the power amp stage a bit more.
A big shout out to the guys at Essex Amp Repairs for giving this Copicat a once over and a bit of TLC before I actually used it to record.

excellent version, pretty much spot on to the original. The valve amp set up really adds to the sound too. Always loved this tune, the Shadows were the first I tried to emulate when I was learning to play as a kid, just rediscovering them now 45+ years on, and this just makes me think of old 60s dance halls that I was never in, but was told about by my mum when her and my dad used to go

had to play it again Rufus, I was in my teens when they used to play this tune at my local dance hall last dance of the night.

absolutely love it. bought a vox ac15c1 last year, and really can't enjoy it, because you really have to crank it up to get the most out of it. going to get that ac4tv for Christmas this year. I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate it.
Fantastic mate, they're a great little amp. If you upgrade it with a Weber Blue Pub speaker and a 12AT7 in the pre-amp it's like a mini vintage AC30 that's cranked!! You won't be disappointed I promise. Let me know how you get on or upload a vid and send me the link :)

Sure thing Rufus. Thx for the info. I did the speaker upgrade with my ac15c1. Was disappointed in a neutral way, nothing wrong with the amp, it's just too much amp for my needs.

Beautifully played and lovely sound from the Copicat. I spotted a Caline 10-Band EQ stting in the signal chain but was it bypassed? I think I also spotted a Catalinbread Echorec (not connected) on top of the AC4TV. What do you think of it? Any use for Shadows tunes?

I do use the EQ pedal for some Shads tunes to get that very mid rich early Hank sound but I don't think I used it for this tune as both amp and Copicat were pushed hard.
The Echorec pedal is a fantastic sounding echo and I've used it recently in a proper recording studio. It sounded wonderful on playback.
I have used it for a few Shads tunes on my channel, one being 'It's been a blue day'

thank you for the reply I have always loved the shadows as all the bands in the 60s that played at my local dance hall always play that song at the end so you could get a girl up to dance and possible take her home at the end of the evening. it was just like yesterday when I put your track on I was back in time to when I was 16 years of age
Wow, this takes me back...I was lead guitarist for a local Cambridge rock group in the 60's the "HI-Fi's" I remember our rhythm guitarist Chris Jones, turned up with a watkins copycat for us to try, ( he worked for Millers music shop ) there was no looking back from then. Midnight was one of my favourite tunes to play and usually our last number at the end of the gig...just great memories, thanks Rufus.

we all had a Watkins copycat, but do you know that Hank used TWO echo units with slow delay on one and faster delay on other, like the rolling effect on Wonderful Land

Hank used a Meazzi on Wonderful Land which gave him the 2 distinct echoes you can hear.
It was a drum type echo much like a Binson.
The 2 delays were down to the specific head spacing around the drum.
I've just made a video on my channel where I've completely restored an old Meazzi so check that out.
From what I've seen H M didn't use two echo units...he used a Meazzi unit.

Yeah that Copicat sounds really good for its age. They're not really used much to get the true Hank sound by aficionados but but I think it does a fantastic job 👍
In my mind, better than SLEEPWALK.

The Strat is a '57 reissue that was made in 1984 when CBS was bought out from Fender and it was the company's first go at getting back to building quality guitars after the 70's debacle.
It was a present from my parents Christmas of the same year!
It has quite a few dents, scratches and wear now, but I think if the house was burning, that would be the guitar I would run in to save as it has so much sentimental value.
