    West Coast Bushcrafters
    Review on the Casström Woodsman
    At the end of 2021 Kjetil bought 2 Casström Woodsman knives for the celebration 1st year of West Coast Bushcrafters. We were so impressed that we needed to do a review about it. It is a great and very practical bushcraft knife. Small knife can do big things. We had a great time filming this one.

    Great vid lads, tack tack! An absolutely superb knife - it quickly became one of my favourites. I does almost everything well and is so quick and easy to sharpen. Great sheath and price too. Worth noting the knife was designed by the English knife maker, Roger Harrington. The Casstrom and hand-made versions of the knife are available from him at Bison Bushcraft. One advantage of going custom is speccing a thinner or stainless blade, depending on your needs and environment and of course, any handle material.

      Thanks a lot!!😁👍. Completely agree what you are saying! Really like the compact aspect of this knife and the control it gives because of that. Great to know about the custom possibilities at Bison Bushcraft😁👍

    I'm 6'3" (1.87M) with XL hands and I find my Woodsman a perfect grip. The thick blade is great for splitting, but as you show in the video, it's not so good for food prep/slicing veggies. For that I got an Opinel to keep in the Trangia.

      Hi! Smart to have a second slicing knife in your cooking gear. Woodsman is great for all the other bushcraft tasks. Thanks for your comment! New slicing knife video incoming. Maybe of interest;-)

      Hi! Awesome to hear, thanks! We use mostly gloves from Hestra. We have several diffrent ones. Hestra Work Glove II and III. Hestra Oden Nubuck is also nice if you prefer more dark leather.

    Hur länge vässa du kniven på varje sten?

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  Рік тому

      Hej! Det beror lite på hur skadad eller vass kniven är. Generellt tror jag kanske 14 - 18 gånger på första sten efter det mindre på varje sten. Avsluta med stroppning på läder 👍

  • @greekveteran2715
    @greekveteran2715 9 місяців тому

    Sharpening tips: You're applying WAY too much presure on the stone with the blade. loose your hand more and try to go slower and more precise. To hit the belly part near the tip, raise the handle up when you rich that part and stop, before the blade exeeds the surface of the stone. Also. Always do the same on both side. One pass per side helps you keep track of the number of epasses, to keep them equaly the same on both sides. As you finsih on the final grit, aplly less and less pressure, so that on the last passes, you let just the weight of the knife (you do apply VERY little pressure, enough to keep the edge angle flat on the stone)
    As for stropping, most people do it wrong, and they dull the edge, instead of doing any good. So I suggest, to avoid stroping, because you actually damaging the apex the more you do it. Strop on a flat stretched piece of newspaper instead (black letters part only, avoid photo prints). Use 1 or 2 less degrees when stropping, than the angle you sharpened. Hope this helps! Happy new year!!

    The woodsman is one of my favorites. It is beautifully made, easy to sharpen and feels great in the hand. He is not big but extremely skilled and just very nicely made. What also strikes me is the high quality of the sheath that Casström supplies. Absolutely recommended in my opinion. And: Nice video guys!

    • @westcoastbushcrafters

      Thanks 😁! You gave a nice summary about this knife. That old bog oak wood on the handle gives it a very nice characteristic. Fully agree on the sheath quality. I use the lars fält sheath even for my bark river bushcrafter 1.

    Nice video again from Strömstad in english in heavy accened from the salty guys from the Swedish westcoast. Again an informtive video. I own the Casstrom Lars Fält fixed blade knife as well as the folding knife. They are good allround knifes and handles most of your normal outdoor adventures. I carry it often when I am searching for cats and dogs in larger forests. However not the right knife for more advanced cooking. Then you better go and buy the cheapest Victorinox chef knife. That makes food prep so much faster. In the forest it often better to prepare back home or just keep it simple.

      Hahaha very well written Mats! Thank you very much for your comment! Nice to hear you are happy with the Casström Lars Fält knife. Good allround knife indeed!
      Hard to beat a chef knife for food prep:). Thin blades do that perfectly. We ordered a special knife that we mainly will use for food prep outdoors. 1 of them is still in the factory but when it arrives...we will make a video about it.
      Take care!

    Excellent review guys! I just got mine in sleipener steel. I really love the design and the bog oak handles. The fit and finish are superb. My only complaint is that the blade is a little too thick for my taste. I would prefer a thinner blade for a knife of this size.

      Thanks a lot!!😁👍 Cool! It is a great knife! This weekend it will be used again🔥💪. Really well manufactured. I agree that it is a quite thick blade but on the other hand… it helps with batoning and feather sticking still goes so smooth. Enjoy your knife!

    Looks like a great knife. Love the bog oak! For me the compact size seems perfect. More than capable for most larger tasks but small enough to control when doing smaller carving tasks. I'll be getting one I think.

      Hi Darren! Thanks a lot!! Nice to hear! Yeah we understand your dilemma haha... We recommend in that case the Lars Fält version. It gives a bit more length which makes it easier to do batoning. Also a great feathersticker. Woodsman is very compact and easy to use. It gives a lot of control. But in your situation we would have bought the Lars Fält first and later on the Woodsman ;-). Hope this helped. Have a great weekend!
