    Beautiful painting.
Fyi, Kristi Rice uses a 1/4" all the time...has her own brand and channel. Love watching both of these channels.
Really like your pic you put up for this video. Lol.
Thank you for all your videos, learn a lot.

First of all, I love the painting, but I want to respond to something else you said. Painting is therapeutic. I have little talent, but lots of desire to create. I paint everyday and find it so relaxing and it often helps me focus for the day. Some days I have a picture in mind, but other days I just play. I would be lost without it. Your videos have inspired me many times and I always learn something. Thank you for sharing your gift!

Bought it too in many sizes. I tried ornamental grasses and it did a good job. You have to start at the tip from the bottom , moving up the page, twist to the side and change to the heel, dragging as you go. It makes a dry brush effect. Great whispy grasses for the background. Also ribbon effects for bouquets . I think it is a huge learning curve. You're up for it I expect. Love your channel, your personality and your work.

I can see alot of abstract art with these type of brushes plus maybe folk birds seem to be easy to paint with the big one... this is a lovely painting...id be proud of framing this painting and hanging it in my wall...it makes me smile ...it looks like its a meadow of flowers being blown by the wind...🎨✍👩‍🎨

I laughed out loud at your intro! I bought the same brush, thinking it was a lot smaller, and my eyes bugged out when I saw the size of it!!! Just got a much smaller one. Haven’t tried them yet. But definitely going to. Thanks, Ellen. Btw, your dagger painting would be great on a tshirt! (My artsy granddaughter and I have your ‘creative soul’ tshirt!)

Dagger Brush you say, they do look formidable.
These odd brushes might paint a nice kelp forest, or other underwater sea weeds.
However, your Floral Friday painting with the Daggers turned out very pretty. 🌺

So I bought the silver black velvet 1/4" dagger. It is long like the Neptunes. They are actually more like striper brushes than daggers. I bought a shorter true 1/4" dagger (I think it's grumbacher) and it is much more manageable and paints leaves like magic. So try a shorter one. I agree with the commenter who mentioned Kristy Rice. She mainly paints with a dagger and makes it look so easy.

Hi, Ellen, I have several daggers including the Princeton. I'm not skilled by any means - I was actually looking for Liz Steel's dagger videos. What I don't like about Princeton's daggers is the bushy-ness. I prefer a tighter brush.
That said, I love your floral. What I see is this floral being a foreground to something. Or, in this, a blue sky behind it. A simple scene. Or a postcard effect.

Very fun. Thank you for sharing your experiment. It is true that these brushes give you less control, but that is exactly why I like to use them sometimes. They can be helpful to keep some looseness in tree branches or in more abstract work. The random wispy brush marks in your piece add a lovely element of fun movement to it.

The Princeton dagger brushes are really floppy, but I LOVE the Silver Brush 1/4” dagger for painting florals and leaves. Held very loosely, they make wonderful leaves and foliage, and I even use them to paint flowers as well. If you want to loosen up your painting, try them.

I have the smaller Escoda Perla Dagger Brush and I love it. I think it is 1/4” and It is not as soft and thirsty as a Neptune would be so you have a lot of control and it allows you to make thin to thick petals and leaves VERY easily. I think the floral piece you created is beautiful but I think you would have a different impression and experience and execution with the Escoda. They are a little bit pricier but with your amazing talent every tool increases their value just by being in your hands…Mine is about a year and a half old and still in perfect condition. On the Princeton brand, I prefer the Aqua Elite to the Neptune on their round brushes and for softer brushes I prefer Silver Brushes Black Velvet to the Princeton Neptune.

I've recently come across a channel called 'paintcrush with Kristy Rice' and I watched quite a few of them and she used mostly the dagger. I have a dagger brush/liner from Silver Black velvet and it seems much easier to control! I like it for adding delicate elements into abstract designs and for when I'm trying to use watercolor to imitate a woven tapestry sort of look. The ones from Neptune look really floppy! That would drive me nuts.

My entry to watercolor via a book by Kristy Rice with a dagger brush. Much much smaller than what you tried. I have the Princeton Select 1/4", which I find has too much snap. Also, and very much love, the Rosemary & Co travel size, which I believe is also 1/4" - very nice brush. I typically paint on very small scale 3x3 inch or 3x4. A 5x8 is a large piece for me. I found it accessible in learning and not having to figure out a bunch of brush sizes and shapes, just get right to painting.

The issue with the Neptune brush series is they have no snap - at all. Consequently, while looking for a dagger, I went with the Heritage brush series and I find it is a bit more controllable, but I’m still not a fan of daggers. Yup, cumbersome is the right word Ellen. I’ve seen some beautiful work on Pinterest and Instagram done with these brushes, but I just cannot get good control with them. Gahhhh. Good luck everyone with them and please share some tips on using dagger brushes.

Yes, my first "good" brush was from the Neptune line. I didn't care for the "floppiness" of it. I bought a set of 4 from the Princeton "Snap" line they were ok. Then I bought a couple of round brushes from the Heritage line. I liked them very much. Also, I have ordered a 3/8" dagger but haven't received it yet. It has much shorter bristles, or at least I think it does. I can't remember the brand (maybe royal and langnickle?) but the ratings on it seemed to fit my hopes anyway.
      Here's hoping.

I looked at buying those brushes too and thought they looked a bit lanky, so I didn’t… I had gotten a nice one from hobby lobby a couple years ago. It is much shorter and about 3/8 inch wide, I love the way you can paint a rope trim with it too! I kinda like the way you can do those tulip leaves and stems with those long daggers!

Ok, I LOVED the colors and movement of the painting. It’s too small on my phone to see much else, but I do think the brushes looked awfully big. 🤔
This was a great tutorial. 🤩

A lot of people use this brush for pinstriping details... It's a learning curve... Nothing compared to a round brush... Lol

I bought one a few years ago! Yikes! I never use it because it is intimidating. I’ll pull it back out and give a try on some scrap paper soon! Thanks for the video.

I have 3 different sizes 3/8, 1/4, 1/8. They are awkward to use, even the small ones, but I’d like to learn to get used to them.
Today I got the same palette you use! Looks convenient to have favorite tube colors right there with slanted wells for washes and color mixes. =)

You've done better than my results with a similar brush. I use the shorter, Rosemary daggers all the time with watercolors but these long ones... In fairness, I think those brushes are designed as liner brushes, holding a lot of paint to be applied in long, thin lines with their tips.

Paintcrush with Kristy Rice on YT, alot of what she uses is the dagger brush. Very interesting technique. Got me to use different brushes

I love daggers and have seen people do amazing things with these squirrel versions but they are too soft for me.

I liked that painting. Interesting brushes. Perhaps if the 1/2 inch is too long you can trim it with a razor blade. Have a nice weekend!
