  • Okay... so I probably didn't need to buy ANOTHER paintbrush, but this dagger really got me thinking. How many supplies do I really need? Could I actually get by with just a single brush?

    You had me at "could this be the one brush to rule them all?". 😃

    Its actually pretty easy to create round and circular forms with a dagger; press it down on the paper and swirl it in a circular motion

    Having just taken up watercolour painting after decades of oils and mixed media using palette knife and big brushes am finding this a challenging challenge in my seventy third year! Then was recommended to buy a dagger brush which I have done . So thank you for showing me how to use it.

    Thanks for this informative video. I received a dagger brush set today, in fact, and looking forward to playing with them shortly. And yes, buying art supplies is somewhat addictive! You should see my things--and right now I've only been learning how to paint skies, oceans and rocks. It's like a kid in a candy store! Much appreciated and happy to be a subscriber! 🎨

    good idea, I tried it but I don't like the feeling of it, I prefer pointy round brushes.

    These are good for Votanical drawing. I do landscapes and I really like long hair for tree brunches, a flat for poles and covering areas and shapes around buildings etc. As also anything round from No6 to No 10 or 12, depending on the size of the paper, or what I'm drawing.

    Yes, it is so true. Addicted…however, I am waiting for a mini dagger. I do have a bigger one and love it.. I’ve done calligraphy and cake decorating in the past so this pressure challenge needs practicing..

      If you want a “mini dagger” brush. Go online and look up pin striping brushes. The dagger brush was originally used way back in the day for sign painting. If you have ever seen any old photos of signs or advertising art on store windows, they were usually outlined by guys that used this brush. It then became popular by car guys for putting custom pinstripes on their cars.

    This is the brush l least like. Thanks for confirming though. I'll stick with my Princeton Elites, sizes 6 to 14, especially 8, 10, and 12s for most things.

    I have yet to get a dagger brush to add to my brushes. I have round, flat, angled, mops, & a cat’s tongue brushes. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video with us. Love your painting that you used this brush with.

    Thanks for the video! I first saw this brush on Liz Steel's site too but was hesitate to try. After seeing how you used it on your video I m more convinced how versatile it is. Their sizes are of different measurement compare to most of the manufacturers what size would you recommend for painting on A5 paper ( like a round 8,10?)? And where would you recommend to get it in Sydney? Thanks!

      I would go with the biggest one in the travel brush collection - even though it might seem too big, it's still a very fine point and can get quite detailed along with doing bigger washes. And I just order mine online, Larry Post has some available or you can order directly from Rosemary and Co, they arrive pretty quickly in my experience!

    Hello. Would you recommend this R16 over the smaller version R12 even for the smaller sketchbooks a6 or so?

    • @JosieViolet
      @JosieViolet  4 місяці тому

      Yes because it still goes to quite a fine point and will be more versatile for painting large areas! Although it depends how detailed you like to go :)

    Possibly you are using a little too much pressure to make consistent very thin lines? Play with it some more. I get great thin consistent lines from a dagger. They are very veratile.

    • @callimico54
      @callimico54 Рік тому

      Should have waited longer to comment. Try using more of the whole brush to get great round shapes. I think the brush is just new to you and you will love it with more use.
