    The movement for independence in Greenland has been growing for years, just as the whining by politicians in Denmark about the financial costs of retaining control of Greenland has grown louder. A vote for independence would have probably have already passed if Denmark did not offer Greenlander's access to EU educational and employment opportunities.
    The posturing by POTUS 47 around Greenland communicates several things simultaneously. It put's Canada in their place. It puts the EU in it's place. It speaks to the underlying sentiment of the Monroe Doctrine, which is that the Western Hemisphere is off limits to the imperial ambitions of foreign powers.
    The rhetoric around Panama reiterates this underlying sentiment. The USA must not sit on her hands while foreign powers make inroads into ownership and control of critical resources in this hemisphere.
    Of course, one cannot invoke the Monroe Doctrine without also breathing life into the Kruschev Doctrine. This is the obvious solution to the military and economic war in Ukraine. Putin demands that the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation be honored, just as any other regional power would.

      @JamesBiggar 18 днів тому

      @@BPrim-ce5zw It doesn't. Canada's not an Imperialist colony. We're a sovereign nation with our own constitution. A member of the Commonwealth of Nations and NATO. Both we and Greenland are off limits to the Imperialist ambitions of the United states, contrary to the delusions coming out of the United States. "You must give up your country for the sake of the US's national security and freedom around the world" is basically what's coming out of Trump and his sycophant's mouths. Classic Imperialist rhetoric that deserves to be mocked, ridiculed, and squashed in every instance. Sure, armchair experts can resort to saying that the US could try to take what it wants by force, but not without being the ones to start WW3 for their own selfish interests and crippling themselves in the process. So much for an anti-war president. Insulting and making veiled threats against a shrinking list of allies that you rely on in a global economy isn't a smart move. Having the largest military budget and the third largest military in the world doesn't = the most successful, either. Not with a 1:5 win to loss ratio. They spent 20 years fighting militant farmers in a tiny 's---hole' country only to cede power and leave in shame. Historically speaking, invading geographically large, northern countries like Canada, or Russia for ex, doesn't usually end well for the invader even with the best of circumstances. Otherwise, someone would've annexed us by now. Trump is talking nonsense and hoping that we're dumb enough to feel threatened by it. It might work on Trudeau, but Trump isn't going to have it that easy for long.

    As Konstantin Kisin once pointed out: Just because you have a platform doesn't mean you should have an opinion about everything. Microphones and an audience tend to make "personalities" dumb.
    I love to listen to Bret and Heather wax lyrically about stuff they know about. But it's discouraging to have to watch Bret who knows little about the Belt and Road Initiative explain to Heather what BTI is as they fumble around with the Greenland topic which has a long and storied history of US strategic plays. Just recently the US, Danes and (believe it or not) Australians have been sparing with the Chinese over access in Greenland.
    Bottom line: Do your research before talking about obscure geostrategic gambits you know nothing about, or better yet, don't go there at all because you damage your cred.
    Yeah, I know, ya'll have this idea that you don't have to be an expert to grok complex issues as a lay person. Which is true, however, you just illustrated how a lay person ought not to approach a complex (not nonlinear, but still deep) topic.
    Also, after years of listening to DarkHorse, I'm getting to the point where Bret's cynicism and paranoia has me doubting his priors and ability to be rational when it comes to the techno-bio political matters he does know a lot about.
    For instance, Bret seems to imagine that medical and health industry people wake up in the morning, yawn, and think what fresh evil can I bring upon the world today? Fact is not even Putin or Barbeque (cannibal gang leader in Haiti) wake up thinking they're the bad guys and how can I fuck the world up more today. I have little doubt that WHO, big pharma, Fauci, dancing Covid nurses, et al, perpetuated mayhem upon the world. I also have little doubt they wake up in the morning thinking they are doing good for the world. You simply do not have to be evil to be bad, stupidity and lacking self-awareness will suffice.
    This may seem a subtle distinction, but it's an important one because it goes to motives and intentionality, which if Bret continues to misjudge en mass, he's likely to also misjudge how to best deal with the problems he wants corrected. As a rule of thumb don't assign corrupt motives to everyone who has done the calculus differently.
    End of rant. PS, I'll be listening to the next darkhorse podcast while I paint the bedroom. Love and peace.

To be fair to Heather, she has spent her life as an evolutionary biologist and mother etc and has suddenly found herself on a podcast that spends or much or most of its time covering political and geo-political issues. "Belongs to Denmark" might not be the best way to describe their agreements. The agreement between Denmark and Greenland allows Greenland to split from Denmark any time it chooses. One of the reasons it doesn't is because it only has a population of around 60K with a high percentage being poor. Denmark pays Greenland an amount equal to around 20% of Greenland's GDP. It's not easy to go independent if you are poor and financially reliant on someone. There's nothing wrong with the US making Greenland a better offer. Development could bring up the income and standards of living for the people of Greenland. Also, there could be more to gain for America than it costs us. The purchase of Alaska was called Seward's Folly at the time and it's now thought of as one of the best land purchases of all time.

      Our corrupt govt would rather covertly overthrow govts and send all our tax dollars to places like Germany even tho it has the best or one of the best economies in Europe.
      As an American I would prefer we shut down 75% of our foreign military bases, stop sending all our money to foreign countries, make deals so that we do control the hemisphere around the USA in a strategic way, not in an economic or political way (maybe that’s impossible idk) and bring back all of our manufacturing from places like China. And the next time Russia invades Ukraine or Germany we just watch instead of getting involved because it’s not our business. That’s what most Americans want.

Obviously we’re not going to invade Greenland and take it and he’s a businessman so everyone with a brain knows he’s talking about making a deal with Denmark/Greenland for them to join the US in some way.

    Whatever you THINK Trump is doing, its usually not what is actually going on. He’s a MASTER at creating deals and strategizing how to get them. Going after Greenland could have nothing to do with Greenland.

    • @JamesBiggar
      @JamesBiggar 18 днів тому

      Lol, ok. Sure. The MASTER worked out the trade deal between Canada and Mexico that he's now complaining about. Maybe he should've mentioned border patrol the first dozen times they sat down with our ministers to hash things out. Maybe he didn't work out such a great deal for America after all? That would be saying something considering the fact that he was dealing with Canada's most incompetent, uneducated woke government in it's entire history at the time. Freeland for crying out loud. Our embarrassment of a former finance minister. That's who he lost to. Trump's 'strategizing' is akin to the logic used by a used car salesman. Get a grip.

    In 1867, United States Secretary of State William H. Seward worked with former senator Robert J. Walker to explore the possibility of buying Greenland and, perhaps, Iceland. Opposition in Congress ended this project.[62] Following World War II, the United States developed a geopolitical interest in Greenland and in 1946 offered to buy the island from Denmark for $100,000,000; the Danish rejected the offer.

    Bret and Heather: “We are going to take a 13:17 point of view - the spirit of Christmas being what it is.”
    What a crock that is!
    Let’s look at the Christmas story. It is a fight to the death with evil!
    When a mystery of of evil overtook the world and it fell, it’s creator came into the world to draw its poison upon himself and die for it sins against Himself, its creator, and rise in victory over them. He came into it to suffer its outrageous hate towards Him, to save sinners from their own evil works, while judging evil for what it is - a contempt for all that is good, pure, beautiful and true - and destroy that evil utterly.
    That is the spirit of Christmas. Not taking time for a happy holiday while the wicked go their killing way. No. If you love the good remain joined in battle with evil. That child in the manger came to die and rise in triumph over a spirit that was and remains malevolent.

    Sort of off topic, but not entirely. I was wondering why Heather didn't use ivrm when she got sick? Also, I just tried to look up the original Nobel Prize press release for when Iver won the prize in 2015, and it has been completely rewritten to omit any mention of it as an antiviral. Which I should have seen coming, but it still is a shocking statement of what they are willing to do! I really wish I had screen shot that. That's the biggest problem with the internet vs books, they can rewrite history in a quick minute.
