    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    On his way to join the Confederate Army, Rhett (Clark Gable) professes his love for Scarlett (Vivien Leigh), but she rejects him harshly.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Gone With the Wind boils down to a story about a spoiled Southern girl's hopeless love for a married man. Producer David O. Selznick managed to expand this concept, and Margaret Mitchell's best-selling novel, into nearly four hours' worth of screen time, on a then-astronomical 3.7-million-dollar budget, creating what would become one of the most beloved movies of all time. Gone With the Wind opens in April of 1861, at the palatial Southern estate of Tara, where Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) hears that her casual beau Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) plans to marry "mealy mouthed" Melanie Hamilton (Olivia de Havilland). Despite warnings from her father (Thomas Mitchell) and her faithful servant Mammy (Hattie McDaniel), Scarlett intends to throw herself at Ashley at an upcoming barbecue at Twelve Oaks. Alone with Ashley, she goes into a fit of histrionics, all of which is witnessed by roguish Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), the black sheep of a wealthy Charleston family, who is instantly fascinated by the feisty, thoroughly self-centered Scarlett: "We're bad lots, both of us." The movie's famous action continues from the burning of Atlanta (actually the destruction of a huge wall left over from King Kong) through the now-classic closing line, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Holding its own against stiff competition (many consider 1939 to be the greatest year of the classical Hollywood studios), Gone With the Wind won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American to win an Oscar). The film grossed nearly 192 million dollars, assuring that, just as he predicted, Selznick's epitaph would be "The Man Who Made Gone With the Wind."

    I think it's admirable that Rhett gave one of his gun to Scarlett, so she can defends herself, when he is, himself, going into a war. I think it's an act of true love.

    • @tracys169
      @tracys169 4 роки тому +36

      I agree but in that moment, I can see a glimpse of Rhett's personality as well. He was secretly an idealist. Rhett put up a good facade and wall around himself, and reveled in a negative reputation, but he was a different man underneath it all. He decided at the end, to join a losing cause, knowing that more likely than not it'd end with him dead on the battlefield. It was nothing against Scarlett or not wanting to care for her, he puts himself and his idealism first at that moment. I think part of him believed, he wouldn't survive the battle. And one can argue, he was rather 'equal rights' at this point, he knew Scarlett was tough and strong enough to go on without him therefore he gave her his gun.

    How many know the score like Rhett did? Scarlett knew the score, but only in her own shoes, which is most of us. But Rhett understoid himself, Scarlett and everyone that he met. He understoid the human condition. I am so glad he loved Scarlett. Most see her as other than the womanly standard, but she was actually the bravest of all of them, her tenacity, strengrh and intelligence saved her home, her family and Melanie. She was this incrediable force and because she was a survivor she was disrepected by everyone but Rhett and Melanie. Scarlett was a hero.

      In the book this scene is so steamy and passionate like you can literally feel the musles on his thighs and how soft his lips are. It's their first actual kiss and Scarlett is swept off her feet actually (like every time they kiss which makes her question her feelings for Ashley). I guess the change of director Cucor and the censure of that time (no screen kiss was supposed to last longer than 3 secs) made this scene a bit rushed. Anyway I love the film but I worship the book. Mitchell had talent to show you and make you feel every scene; that's why Rhett and Scarlett are immortal.

      Rhett already knew that Scarlett had always been in love with Ashley long before this. He, of course, thought he could 'change' her mind after they got married. He did spoil her, let her run the business, and they made a great couple and enjoyed each other. I think he started to 'lose hope' that she would end up loving him. I think partly because Scarlett was in deep denial and still held on to the idea of Ashley so she didn't show how much she actually loved Rhett. Part of me thought that Rhett might have an issue from his past that made him think that he didn't deserve to be loved so he held on to Scarlett (wanting her love) for so long. But when Bonnie came along, I think Rhett found some healing and felt love or felt being loved then he knew his 'worth' and to finally leave after Bonnie's then Melanie's death.

    Many have seen Rhett’s leaving as a selfish act, but I disagree. Seeing the realities of war crashing around him, I think Rhett realized that he was wrong to avoid real duty. Yes, he was a blockade runner, but purely “for profit.” Yes, he didn’t think the war was a good idea, but neither did Ashley. The difference between Rhett and Ashley is that the latter had too much honor to see things as clearly as Rhett did. In many regards, I’m sure that Rhett saw Ashley as a fool, and Scarlett too for loving him. In this scene, I think that changes. I think seeing the men in tatters, the war clearly lost, finally allows him to realize that their cause could not have been pure arrogance, as arrogance would not have justified these men in continuing to fight a losing battle.
    I do not think it was Meade’s oversight to avoid any sort of confrontation between Rhett and Ashley over Scarlett’s affections. While many lose respect for Ashley as the book/movie progresses, I think Rhett gained respect for him. He sees in his selfless defense of a losing cause the type of gallantry he finds lacking in himself.

      Scarlett, for such a smart-witty-clever-cunning person...is amazingly the least self-aware person on the book LOL. She's like got a blinders on or something, she doesn't realize many things, while Rhett on the other hand, had more 'sense' or more awareness and acceptance of his selfish nature and so on.

    Note: At this point in the novel, Scarlett was 16 (maybe 17) years of age; Rhett was pushing 40. Because the book was so fresh in the American people's minds, 1939 audiences were fully aware of this fact and didn't seem to mind. Today, however, I believe it would be a totally different reaction and rightfully so. However, I believe it was quite common for men to marry much younger during this time in American history.

    Anyone watching and reading in 2021? I just happened upon this as it’s one of my favorite books and movies. I must tell you that in the book Rhett shows up many more times and is more of a rascal as he declares his love for her many times in the book and also his indication of wanting to make love to her. He also helps her a lot too. He gives her money in the book and helps her when she is overcome with morning sickness when she’s pregnant with her second child. In the book she married three times and has two other children besides Bonnie.
    At one point, he tells her that sometimes he felt like he wanted to kill her second husband, Frank, because he was so in love with her and wanted her for himself.

      I'm watching and reading in 2021 (waves) Yeah, I notice the bit where Scarlett throws up in front of Rhett when she's pregnant with Ella didn't make it into the movie, lol. But it says a lot about Rhett's character that he doesn't even blink when Scarlett vomits, just holds her head for her, passes her a handkerchief and when she's overcome with embarrassment, he just shrugs and tells her he already knows she's pregnant. You have to remember that for a lady to throw up in public was about the most socially humiliating thing that could happen in the 1800's, and Rhett didn't care, he just took it in his stride. What a guy!

      Rhett knew that scarlet was an immature girl who doesn't know the real meaning of marriage. Her first marriage is to avenge Ashley's disregard for her. Second marriage to Frank is to save Tara. She never married for love and fun. Rhett, when he proposes to Scarlett remarks that she had married a boy and an old man. Why not Marry a man the right age who has a way with women like himself . He loved Scarlett to the extent he tolerated all her crazy marriages and waited for her and was Kind to her children through former marriages.what a man!scarlett didn't knew his worth until Melanie dies leaving behind a devastated Ashley. Her illusion of Ashley is overcome only at that point when she is left alone and she runs in search of Rhett which was too late

    I mean, I love this movie. But I have to disagree with the comments that "we need more men like Rhett" and that men need to act again like "real men" back then. As a woman, I like Rhett's personality, but when he got all over dominant over scarlett scared me and I'm sure as hell this isn't what I would more or likely look inside of a man towards me. Modern times are better in some things because people can express themselfs much more then back then into those gender roles what some people never really suited. Its still difficult but at least a little better. And not everybody has the same taste. So its fine to wish for men like Rhett, but saying men need to become real men again then whining like "stop saying what I should or shouldn't do, I'm a woman of my own" is kinda annoying.
