I think for the moment, we'll all say "I can't stop seeing him as eric" but as with every other actor, they blend into other roles amazingly. Bradley Walsh and John Bishop are two prime, recent examples. I'm so excited for this casting
I haven't seen Ncuti Gatwa in anything myself. I have only heard and read good things about his acting ability. So the only box that matters is ticked for me.
All I knew about David Tennant when he was announced as the Doctor was that he'd played a Transvestite barmaid n "Rab C Nesbit" n had been in a Doctor Who audio story. The he just smashed the role out of the park to become 1 of the most popular incarnations ever! So let's all give Ncuti a chance (the costume will obviously help) and now I can start watching it again after a 5 year break!
i've not seen sex education and therefore don't have the issue of seeing him as his character on that.. so i can see a lot of doctor potential with him already and he seems so genuine from the interviews and i'm rlly rlly excited for what's to come
Never seen his work before, but he has an interesting look. He doesn't have the same "ancientness" that Matt Smith did/does, but from what I've seen so far, he does have something of an otherworldly appearance, which I'm intrigued by.
I agree, I have read so many comments in various groups and media, that on the most part, it's been positive. Finally after so long, there's this good vibe about Ncuti as the Doctor. I personally haven't seen him in anything yet and I think I'll wait until I've seen a few episodes of him as the Doctor before watching his other work. I'm sure he's going to be awesome and I wish him all the best.
If he's half as brilliant as he's been in Sex Education with that range of acting, he'll be a top shelf Doctor. While I haven't enjoyed the inconsistency in writing quality I've enjoyed Whittaker's portrayal and I hope RTD, who has a much better sense of what the show should be about, teams them up together at some point, I think he'd get the best out of both.
THANK YOU im mix race and have had enough of people going on about his race for no reason when theres so much actually interesting stuff to say about him and how he may be in the role
Even tho I have only seen him in Sex Education I personally think he is a good choice. I think he pull of the comedy and the dramatic stuff quite well, i can’t wait for this RTD era to start.
I had a brief midlife crisis when I realised that this is the first actor to play the Doctor who is younger than I am. Feels like the end of an era. Personally. Now, I haven’t seen Sex Education. However, I’ve watched some interviews with Ncuti, and I love his energy. He also has a BAFTA, and they don’t give those to just anybody. I also trust RTD with casting, since he has been great at it so far. I am very excited about this, and I can’t wait to see where they take it!
My guess is they had a big announcement video planned but something went wrong behind the scenes and to get ahead of a negative leak the announcement was rushed and unexpected as it was.
Maybe. Or maybe they just went with the times and decided to announce it on social media and than use the BAFTA s to promote him. Cause come to think of it, the original rumor, a clip between Fa Cup final and Eurovision, would've meant socials and the media are full of football and Eurovision and the announcement might have actually had less buzz
Im glad its an actor i know virtually nothing about, i trust russel’s judgment so yeh im on board. Speaking of costumes i think he would actually look cool in jo martin’s doctor’s costume! The dark blue jacket and waistcoat with the bright colourful frilly cuffed shirt 👌👌
I haven't seen anything that Ncuti is in. But from what I have heard, he is a very versatile actor. Which is exactly what Doctor Who needs. Looking forward to this new era with Ncuti & RTD!
Spot on with your comments towards the end. This should just be a time to be exited to see what the actor is going to do. Nothing else is relevant. People need to trust Russell I would say. An award winning writer not some trolls online. Hope he is amazing as the Doctor. Great video as always. 😊
I'm so excited to see Ncuti as the Doctor. He has the combination as an actor which every Doctor needs: he is able to be hilarious and also create a real sense of dramatic gravity. That's the secret of the Doctor: he's a clown who cares deeply about every person in the universe and fighting for justice. As to what you say about race, gender, or sexuality not mattering. Not really true. It means the world to people of colour, to female fans, to queer fans to see themselves reflected on the screen as an iconic hero. When Marvel comics created Miles Morales as another Spider-man, there were so many young black kids saying, "Really? I can be Spider-man, too?" There's a saying in kid's lit that marginalized people are given windows, a tale to look through and try to find themselves, while white, cis, able-bodied kids are given mirrors. Yes, a South Asian kid can look at Matt Smith and still imagine being the Doctor, but what would it mean for him to see someone from his own heritage as the greatest hero? So, in the sense that the Doctor can be anyone brilliant and mad, you're right it doesn't matter. But in another sense, it does.
But it still doesn't matter that much Sure it's great to see someone like yourself but in a women and didn't care when Jodie became the doctor. Its fine to be happy about seeing others like you but some are weirdly desperate for representation and treat it like the holy grail when it happens.
If your a kid and believe that you can't be someone cause they want portrayed like you then you need to leave whatever bad environment your living in. If you were a good enough doctor who fan you would've already known the doctor can look just like you and vice versa
How very refreshing to listen to a content creator that doesn’t hold back and quite frankly tells it how it is. Kudos to you sir, keep it up. Also I think the next series is gonna blow people away.
I’m the exactly the same, I’m not judgmental until we’ve had promo pics, and trailers and seen his first ep , tbh I don’t care he’s black I just won’t someone who will blow us away like smith did when we had doubts on him sooo Yeah that’s my hopes that it’s going to be good but I just hope it’s not going to be like the last few year… all I want is just good story telling… hell I’ll take anything over what is happening right now Cameron
I can't say that I ever heard of this actor, but I had never heard of Matt Smith either. I have some faith in RTD so I hope this is a good casting choice and he's given good scripts because I really, really want to be excited about Doctor Who again. I also have no problem with the race change - I would have loved to have seen Iris Elba as the Doctor.
I liked Matt because he brought to the Doctor a certain 'alien'ness if you know what I mean. Capaldi is interesting: he needed about a season to get his bearings, but in my opinion his departure was the most emotional. All Doctors but especially Tennant, have you the idea that as protectors and guardians they would give their life, with a smile it it would mean earth would be safe. Each Doctor for so in his / her own way. I hope the new one does as well. :)
Agreed on pretty much everything you brought up. I can't say I love or hate this choice, as I have no idea what to expect. It'll probably take me a while to stop seeing Eric, and going back to se education is going to be pretty weird after I've seen him as the doctor, but I'm down to find out what russell's new era is going to look like. It feels like venturing into the unknown and that's pretty exciting.
Talk about completely unexpected, but saying this, I remember in June 1974, I never knew who the fourth Doctor was going to be until the regeneration occurred. I saw Peter Davison on John Craven's newsround, my uncle Mike told me about Colin Baker. Anyway this sudden announcement was a shock to the system, I've never heard of him. It's not about sexual orientation or race, or gender, it's about performance.
Certainly an interesting choice. I don't know much about him, but what little I have seen and read about him seems positive. My gut feeling is that he'll be great; a good actor who RTD obviously has a lot of faith in but also perhaps different enough from Ecclestone/Tennant to not feel like treading over old ground again. If RTD can bring back good quality writing (which has been sorely lacking in Chibnall's run) whilst also providing something fresh then we are on to a winner. Really excited to see what the RTD2/Gatwa era brings to the table!
I am excited by the announcement, I think even more so as I've never actually watched Sex Education (although I do wanna go and watch it now!) So I think it'll be easier for me to see him as the doctor as I'm coming from almost a neutral standpoint, also he's Scottish and you can't go wrong with a Scottish doctor! I also do kinda like how the announcement was just out of nowhere, no big hyping it up like in previous years, just simply some emojis and an Instagram post. Of course to fully judge him we'll need to see where RTD goes with him and who the companion(s) will be, but yeah no I hope he'll do a good job as the doctor and finally (re?)unite the fandom!
I would love for the reveal to have been in the actual regeneration episode. But due to possible leaks, that’s not gonna happen. As for the casting, I know nothing about him, as I didn’t know anything about David Tennant or Matt Smith. I’m just looking forward to some good Doctor Who again.
Hot take: I'd love to see Gerraed Butler as Rassilon maybe in an arc of Rassilon trying to rebuild the honor and galactic dominance the Time Lords had in earlier Classic Who
The reason none of us know who he is is because if you made a venn diagram of people who like Doctor Who and people who like that Netflix show, the 2 circles would be on different planets.
I am beyond ecstatic! I will say though I do think this casting is important, Ncuti is a brilliant actor but I do love that a black actor was cast in the leading role, I think continuing to break barriers like with Jodie's casting is important as I think it normalises casting different kinds of people as the Doctor so in the future a woman or a POC actor being cast won't be a big deal, even Jodie said this! It is a big deal right now because it is a first and I think that is wonderful so I don't think there is any problem being super happy with that but of course the talent is what matters most and like all of his predecessors he has it in spades! I am very excited to see what he does in the role, i think he will smash it!
I thought it was an interesting choice for the role. When I watched Sex Education I never got any Doctor vibes from him. We shall see how he does but I do trust RTD and I am excited for Doctor Who for the time in a long time cause the Chibs era is finally over! I just want 2023 to come now!
I'm indifferent to whoever is chosen as the Doctor these days. I'm pleased it's someone I've never heard of (the pre-announcement predictions are always so dull) - I'm not going to watch anything he's been in so he'll be totally new to me. I always love the new Doctor making their first uncertain steps - before they settle and I get bored by them😎. I know it seems to be for a film he's making but I like the blonde hair look and moustache - it makes him look older - I agree he looks very young. I'm more excited for the new look of the show - what will the TARDIS interior look like? Will they create a new exterior box? Who is doing the music? Who will direct it? That stuff excites me.
Very excited to see him perform! I’m not familiar with his work, I know he’s in sex education though, he looks and acts like the doctor in interviews though. So excited and open minded for RTD2, my favourite writer!
Truth be told, I have no idea how good of an actor Ncuti is because i’ve never seen Sex Education or anything else that he’s in, but I know Russel T Davies has an eye for talent and that he will always pick the right person.
Personally, I think it's a good thing that Gatwa is a bit of an unknown, that's been a good theme in the casting of New Who. Christopher Eccleston wasn't known too well by Doctor Who's demographic, David Tennant was only known by theatre geeks and Matt Smith was a complete unknown. Problem is that with actors who are too well known they bring too much baggage of prior roles. All I can say is that I'm excited to see Davies's return and Gatwa's debut and I hope all the horrible comments being thrown his way don't bring him down.
If he impressed RTD that has a record of 2/2, then it's enough for me, I trust RTD. Haven't seen anything of Ncuti and I honestly don't really want to start Sex Education, because I know he plays a totally different character than the Doctor, but I am eager to see his portrayal.
I agree with the race thing. It’s stupid dismissing him on those grounds. However when it comes to historical kind of stories it’ll be jarring for me if they don’t honestly explore the issues that race can present for the Doctor. At the same time, I don’t really wanna see that. So it’ll be a case of if the doctor lands in say 1800s America or something, and they ignore the race thing I’ll find it weird. But if they land in 1800s America and do explore it I’ll also be annoyed cos I don’t really wanna see that in doctor who. But maybe RTD will find a way around those issues I dunno. I’m sure Ncuti will do just fine
They’ve already written episodes like that. Such as Thin Ice with 12 and Bill. It’s a part of the episode and is addressed, but it isn’t the main plot. But then of course it is important to stories like Rosa, and similar messages are in many classic who stories like remembrance of the daleks. Most black people don’t want to see themselves on tv constantly in bad situations where they’re being prejudiced against, they want happy stories too I would imagine.
I will do my usual and form my opinion of the new Doctor at the end of his first season. Quite frankly at this point i'll be happy with an improvement in the shows writing again.
ncuti is an awesome choice for the Doctor bc we have literally zero clue what to expect. he's so versatile as an actor and I'm so excited to watch him under russT! cant wait to see the getup they make him wear as well lol that's gonna blow it out the water on the race thing, it's about representation. a big character like this being a different race, seeming irrelevant to you, might mean a lot to a young black kid bc it's someone that looks like them in a huge role. there was a muslim brown girl on the show in the form of yas and it was cool to see for me (even if they catastrophically butchered my religion and culture, I want to rate the effort. even though it was a shite one). I get your point in that it *is* irrelevant for the character, yes, I mean dudes still a time travelling alien from the planet gallifrey and they've chosen an extremely talented young actor to play that role. but from the viewer's side, especially if you're from the demographic, it's pretty cool
I'm glad to see you admit here that the you were guilty of worrying about the gender of the actor playing the Doctor five years ago. I'll admit that It turned me off from your channel back then, but I think I'll dive back in after hearing you say that that sort of thing just doesn't and shouldn't matter. I strongly believe the Doctor can and should be able to be anyone or even anything.
I think I'm glad I've never seen Sex Education so I will have a fresh view of the actor. My first thought was much like it was with Peter Davidson...too young, too attractive. The other doctors were not unattractive but the all had a sort of "quirky" look to them. Now, I did grow to like Peter as the Doctor and I hope to get used to Ncuti as well. I really don't give a hang about his race and hope they don't try to make episodes that highlight racism. Lets just get back to Doctor Who!
Well, here's hoping we see good things from the new line up. I watched a few episodes of Whitaker era, but it was not enjoyable so I quit. Ended up going into the classic catalog as there were, and still are, many episodes from classic who I haven't seen. It would be nice to enjoy some new who again. Don't know anything about this actor so it will be a mystery and I'm up for that.
I don't see it sorry. He getting praise for playing a black gay man, but a 2000 year old Alien is a different thing. I don't see any gravitas with him in any shape or form. Adrian Lester or Ashley Walters as the Doctor yes they have it in buckets and I really want to be proved wrong and maybe I will. Already however I can clearly see the agenda and the message getting shoved to the front again. Maybe I am too cynical, but this actor will not bring back the fans and the ratings. So for now very disappointed by the news. They needed a known star to get casual fans back, this is not the move that will. Sorry Wingy I have seen tons of neg reactions,. some dickheads going on about his ehnic background, but others with fair points.
You can sit on the fence, but you can't say Doctor Who still isn't woke though. He's a Rwandan gay actor. They couldn't even find a British lead in a British show for the British Broadcasting Corporation. There's no British charm in Doctor Who anymore. It's a postcard to a global audience. But if you are a millennial who doesn't really care about the Classic run, doesn't really care about British culture and has been surrounded by American TV shows, Netflix and global TV - it won't matter to you. He was chosen for a diversity reason. Otherwise, what was wrong with picking another straight white male as the lead? What's wrong with people like me and you? Absolutely nothing. But the people at the BBC seem to think so and that was why such a person wasn't cast. It's political, even if you refuse to see it. And for that reason I know Doctor Who will remain political, whether you do or do not support the narrative.
"They couldn't find a British lead" The guy's lived in Scotland since before he was even 2 years old, I think it's fair to say he's fucking British. Every time a Scot has played The Doctor they've been one of the best. According to RTD, when they were doing the auditions they THOUGHT they had the actor decided, then Ncuti did his audition and they changed their minds based on his performance blowing the others out of the water. I don't think simply being black got him the role lmao. "I know Doctor Who will remain political" Ah, like it has been for decades? Good to know.
@@WingyMedia Great question for Joshua. I also wonder what Joshua's take on racism was, as there was none in my original post. I'll wait. I'm sure he/she/they are just busy at present.
@@joshuataylor3550 *yawn* just had two VERY restful nights of sleep. Not a wink lost. How did you sleep? static.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/d/dc/Garak_and_his_lies.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20200216192552&path-prefix=en
I have zero confidence after seeing the interview "more representation and diversity" and there was RTD agreeing & I hope I'm wrong (it is my favourite show) but RTD has to fix the timeless children and make the doctor a time lord from Gallifrey, he can't ignore it as Chibs has destroyed the entire history of the show
Honestly I just hope he keeps his head down, gives 100% in his performances and endears himself to the fandom. The problem with Jodie Whittaker was she immediately came out with divisive comments about the show "celebrating the white male gaze", taking the piss out of fans unhappy with her casting and most crucially gave some of the worst performances as the Doctor we've ever seen. If Ncuti Gatwa can just stay away from that nonsense and dedicate his entire focus on the role, then he's already a big upgrade.
The show has never been about a “male gaze”what’s she talking about. All the female companions aren’t looked at as sex objects ever in the show she is nuts for that.
@@ljllob4740 Well to be fair, Amy, River and Clara’s variants are but I’m convinced it’s because Steven Moffat writes with one hand down his trousers. But yeah, there is a female gaze too. Eccleston, Tennant and Smith all had shirtless scenes
Jodie Whittaker actually said, in an interview for the niche Vulture magazine: _"Very often, we're only seeing the stories told through the white male gaze. That's what the show has always celebrated."_ That is literally no more divisive than saying _"In Watership Down, we very often see stories told through a grey rabbit's gaze. That's what the book celebrates"._ However, some comprehension-deficient bloggers/UA-camrs twisted her statement and blew it out of all proportion, using it to paint Whittaker as an evil witch who had it in for white male fans. Regardless of how good/bad we think she was in the role, she is not an evil witch, and she has not pursued any such vendetta against any fans. Any divisiveness has come from certain people who have been stirring the $hit ever since Jodie was cast, spreading misleading or false statements as if they were direct quotes. Indeed, that very phrase "celebrating the white male gaze" is a distortion of what she actually said, latched onto by certain NMD propagandists who were only too happy to spread it to their followers.
The whole "white male gaze" she was talking about how its great that we've now got people from different backgrounds writing for the show and that's awesome. She never took the piss out of fans if you're referring to the stylist video she is literally looking at tweets and going "rude." If you think that's "attacking fans" it's just dumb. I'm sick of morons on the Internet demonising Jodie for stuff she hasn't done.
Not gunna lie I don’t know anything about this actor and sex education isn’t a show that particularly looks like something that interests me so I guess I’m going into this with an open mind which is a good thing as I only see this actor as the doctor as I haven’t seen his previous work
I think he is a good choice. He will freshen things up nicely. As long as the writing from RTD and the team is proper!! If they go down the PC road it could be a disaster. If it is written for him to be the Doctor he will be very good indeed. I'm excited.
We just want good strong stories, he was absolutely fantastic in sex education, everyone didn’t rate Matt smith when he was announced lol. So here’s too the 14th ❤️ ❤️ + 🟦
What also excites me is when he was asked what villains we wanted to face russell said new ones.
The unluckiness of you posting a 'what I want to see' they day before the new doctor is announced 😂

Really excited to see what the RTD2/Gatwa era brings to the table!
given the amount of choices whom are the other other auditioning choices
Just isn't true though is it? I'm literally someone who likes both and know many who do
I am beyond ecstatic!
I'm giving the new doctor a chance he will be great I think so
I'm indifferent to whoever is chosen as the Doctor these days.

Not seen sex education but he was very good in “the last letter from your lover” so no issues here
Who cares, he has been chosen, dr who rocks
☑️✅
this is not bringing me back to doctor who even with rtd back.
I am very disappointed that after we have had only one female doctor and RTD2 had just gone straight back to a male doctor.
He's a bloke. That's a start. Sorry if that's controversial.
It's a fictional alien that literally changes it's form. Don't be so offended you snowflake.
ncuti is an awesome choice for the Doctor bc we have literally zero clue what to expect. he's so versatile as an actor and I'm so excited to watch him under russT! cant wait to see the getup they make him wear as well lol that's gonna blow it out the water
on the race thing, it's about representation. a big character like this being a different race, seeming irrelevant to you, might mean a lot to a young black kid bc it's someone that looks like them in a huge role. there was a muslim brown girl on the show in the form of yas and it was cool to see for me (even if they catastrophically butchered my religion and culture, I want to rate the effort. even though it was a shite one).
Doctor Who is at the least in stasis. At the worst, dead. Woke is cancer. Want a black Doctor? Idris Elba. Please!
so let me get this straight ( no pun intended) they have picked an african homosexual to be the doctor.
It's all about the writing if its good the show will work
Well, here's hoping we see good things from the new line up.
Sorry Wingy I have seen tons of neg reactions,. some dickheads going on about his ehnic background, but others with fair points.
i agree that i dont think it will bring back millions of fans,
I'm scared
"They couldn't find a British lead"
The guy's lived in Scotland since before he was even 2 years old, I think it's fair to say he's fucking British.
"I know Doctor Who will remain political"
Ah, like it has been for decades? Good to know.
About Time we had a black doctor but star trek ds9 had the frist black captain back in the middle and late 90s
The Doctor is still not ginger, but he's certainly a word that rhymes with it!
Congratulations, cannot wait for the next era! :)
That's horrifically racist. I hope you can't sleep tonight.
What word is that then?
@@WingyMedia Great question for Joshua. I also wonder what Joshua's take on racism was, as there was none in my original post. I'll wait. I'm sure he/she/they are just busy at present.
@@joshuataylor3550 *yawn* just had two VERY restful nights of sleep. Not a wink lost. How did you sleep?

That's what the show has always celebrated."_
That is literally no more divisive than saying _"In Watership Down, we very often see stories told through a grey rabbit's gaze.
Doesn't affect me in the slightest. I stopped watching when Capaldi was the doctor. Dr Who for me is Hartnell - McCoy and always will be.
Won't be watching this BBC crap
Not gunna lie I don’t know anything about this actor and sex education isn’t a show that particularly looks like something that interests me so I guess I’m going into this with an open mind which is a good thing as I only see this actor as the doctor as I haven’t seen his previous work
I believe that Jo Martin is a black person and everyone loved her. I was hoping she was going to be the 14th
Guessing RTD wanted a fresh slate, and using Ncuti has definitely brought a lot more publicity to the show which using Jo wouldn’t have
I think he is a good choice. He will freshen things up nicely. As long as the writing from RTD and the team is proper!! If they go down the PC road it could be a disaster. If it is written for him to be the Doctor he will be very good indeed. I'm excited.
how can it not go down that road with this casting, i truly give up with this show.
keep the WOKENESS out of Dr Who !
We just want good strong stories, he was absolutely fantastic in sex education, everyone didn’t rate Matt smith when he was announced lol. So here’s too the 14th ❤️ ❤️ + 🟦
