The moment he gets back to England and discovers they don't play on his Region B blu-ray player.
Lol! Brilliant!
Region free blu ray players are available.

What an idiot you are. Good day, sir.

"This is the sight of my personal financial ruin." Truer words have never been spoken. I've often joked, crack would be cheaper. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
Things were a lot difficult 5 years ago
Yes, my personal financial ruin...the cost of my ISP and phone data plan for all those e-mails and calls to Criterion's office from across the pond, asking for promo copies.
watching richard light up while he talks about films makes me so incredibly happy i wish this was longer
It *was* longer; this was a brief lighting and sound check. Ayoade, known as "The Lugubrious Chestnut" to his peers, held court in that closet for nearly three hours. The extended cut will be released as a special feature on a Criterion DVD of his choosing.
@@whatevershebrings interesting I’m not dismissing it but I’m curious as to where you got this information
@@whatevershebrings liar
It's a shame that he didn't pick White Chicks
"White chicks" was a pretty big hit here in Brazil, i was surprised when he mentioned it on countdown and then was surprised again that he was just mocking it.
the citerion edition of „white chicks“ really is something else.
You can pick it.
He does, in real life.
@@robsonneves6189 it was a big hit with morons.
i love how happy and smiley he is throughout the vid :)
I was happy too whilst browsing through 100s of dvds in Blockbuster. Now we are spoilt for choice on streaming channels.
He looks like he belongs in a Wes Anderson film.
Man I'd be celebrating if Anderson casted him in one of his films.
i don’t think Wes Anderson casts poc so i don’t think we’ll be seeing Richard in his movies anytime soon
@@lt3111 have you not watched The Grand Budapest Hotel?

The Criterion Collection better add Submarine because that film is designed to be released on it! Love Submarine's story, humour, acting, characters, Erik Wilson's beautiful cinematography taking place in Swansea, Wales, the incredibly underrated score by Andrew Hewitt and an iconic soundtrack by Arctic Monkeys Frontman Alex Turner to boot! Timeless, funny, charming, endearing, but, sad and plucks your heart strings throughout! I still haven't seen the IT Crowd and think Richard Ayoade is talented at comedy and most likely the most successful British Comedian film director since Terry Gilliam!
Wholeheartedly agree. Terry Gilliam is American though.
@@joefurey9564 dude he’s a Monty Python lol
Submarine is perfect for Criterion
@@wtfemtf Yeah - and Gilliam is their only American member. They love saying that too.
I like Richard Ayoade a lot but Submarine is a fairly average film. I enjoyed it but didn't feel that original. There's a long long list of films that should be added that haven't yet and Submarine is definitely not high on there.
I just don’t understand how one person can have that much charm.
Listening to him made me more intelligent
Yes, there was so much of margin for that happen. Even random noises can help you if you try.
Understood, but watching him makes nobody prettier. This is the paradox within.
You're suppose to leave with your hands full and never return. Clearly he didn't see Alfonso Cuaron's DVD picks.
Sisters
Certified Copy (in his hands)
Zazie Dans La Metro
Le Havre
I think he also mentioned Kazan (?) (he mentioned it in a mumbly fashion possibly), so that would be On the Waterfront.
Listening again, he actually mentioned Chabrol's Les Cousins, not Kazan.
So, full list:
Sisters
Certified Copy (holding)
The Magic Flute
Zazie dans le metro
Persona
Le Havre
Les Cousins
***** Clouzot i thing. he mentioned henry george clouzot
+Casey Bargsten your profile pic is one of my favorite moments in film history... oh, poor Nana...
Casey Bargsten I’ve seen all of his picks and I hated them all, but I like the things he’s in
Sisters
Certified Copy
Persona
Zazie Dans La Metro
The Double
La Havre
To count the ones he mentioned
I think it was Kazaam
He's so brilliant, I trust all his movie choices.
Yes, but do *not* trust his hair stylist!
@@whatevershebringshis hair is gorgeous ngl
Yes, finally somebody picks Zazie. I wish this was longer.
I have never seen him so comfortable.
"The place of my Financial Ruining" -Richard Ayoade on Criterion's Closet.
Could we get a listing of the movies they talk about in the description? It would make it a lot easier to check them out.
They were: Certified Copy, Le Havre, The Magic Flute, Zazie dans le Metro, Persona and Sisters
And The Wages of Fear
Oh to be shopping for DVDs with Richard Ayoade
Better DVDs than a pregnancy test kit.
Always love these videos but they also always make me think of these filmmakers' personal collections. A video series of the movie collections/movie rooms of various filmmakers and actors would be so great. Someone make it happen! ^_^
That would terrific.
Has nothing to do w his selection but... He’s really hot
Este video richard ayoade dvd picks este chico es muy guapo me está gustado por que le quiero mucho muchos abrazos y besitos me gusta su pelo rizado
You gotta love Criterion’s choice to go with the frame of him in completely shadow under terrible fluorescent light for the thumbnail.
This segment was directed (and lit, like all his feature films) by Ayoade himself--per Dogma 98's manifesto.
God he's so attractive it's bananas.
I know, right? 😀
and your ass is grass
I think he wanted them all.
you guys need to put the dvd picks in the description or something so i can look these up
Hey, it's the guy from Garth Marenghi's Darkplace!
Such a beautiful soul! I wish we could get more of his fine work in America.
Este video tambien me gusta este chico con su pelo rizado por que me enamorao es muy guapo
Sisters (1973) dir. Brian De Palma
The Magic Flute (1975) Ingmar Bergman
Zazie Dans le Metro (1960) dir. Louis Malle
Le Havre (2011) dir. Aki Kaurismaki
Les Cousins (1959) dir. Claude Chabrol
I've never been quite sure if the people in these videos are expected to pick out favorites, to provide viewers with some insight of what they like most, or if they are genuinely supplementing their current collections, and therefor picking movies they like but are NOT favorites already in their own collections.
Richard is the most English Englishman in the history of Britain. Very disarming and hilarious, too.
english? he's a black
has to be the politest dude ever. only person I've ever seen put a film BACK
Ladies and gentlemen... THE NEXT DR WHO!
"Zazie dans le Metro" is such a joy to watch.
Where do you think I can watch it?
Such great unexpected ASMR...
"You wouldn't steal a handbag. You wouldn't steal a car. You wouldn't
steal a baby. You wouldn't shoot a policeman. And then steal his helmet.
You wouldn't go to the toilet in his helmet. And then send it to the
policeman's grieving widow. And then steal it again! Downloading films
is stealing. If you do it, you will face the consequences."

So...does this mean Criterion's working on a release for one of his films? Or has he contributed on some of their releases before? Either way, loved his reaction to being in the closet. It must be so unbelievable.
No, it just means that the proverbial bar is set pretty low for Criterion Collection closet visitors.
@@whatevershebrings nonce
I would be like a kid in a sweet shop picking my favourites!
you like censored versions of your favorite movies?
How tall are those shelves? Ayoade is 6 ft as it is.
What many don't know is that the Criterion Collection closet floor is recessed about three feet lower than its exterior; Ayoade was consulted on the initial design in 2004 and its unique features afford him a greater vantage point.
@@whatevershebrings haha
Did you try unplugging it and plugging it back in again?
That's the other bloke
Have you tried turning it off and on again? *
Didn't know he was known in The US. Ayoade is great.
His version of The Double should be in the collection
Could throw in Submarine too while we're at it. Both are brilliant and absolutely worthy.
Was not expecting him to mention Aki Kaurismäki. Torilla tavataan.
Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jona Hill?????
Moss choosing films to watch with Roy and Jen...
And remember: Needs to have a good distance from sofa...lol
Criterion needs to put out a blu-ray of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.
UH I want the Criterion Collection in europe so bad!!
Can we get his two films on criterion with a ton of special features please?
Holding a copy of Certified Copy. Niiiice.
I'd put Zazie up there in my top 20. Nice to see someone else with such regard for it!
Very much looking forward to seeing that, now.
Is that all?
First he was in the box trolls then soul and now the bad guys
Why was it cut so short?
Was he in character? Bloody hell he moves and talks like Moss in the IT Crowd!
That's the least Richard Ayoade I've ever seen him
MOSS!
What’s with all of these DVDs?
he's charming but a bit all over the place here, i hardly got anything out of it other than his love of Zazie Dans Le Metro, which is cool
INTP
ADHD
he's so different here compared to Travel Man!
anyone know what movie he is talking about when he mentions the field mouse and city rat?
He's exactly like I'd be if I was allowed in
why?
We're bunking off!
I'm lowkey bummed to hear Jesse Eisenberg didn't find Buster Keaton helpful in forming his character. Buster is ALWAYS helpful in forming my character, spirit and sense of _joie de vivre_ ... and I'm now highkey annoyed with myself that I've succumbed to using the unimaginative buzzword 'lowkey'. Damn. Back to Buster school of manners. There are no bad Busters.
What did he the pick, the first one in the blue case? Anyone know?
"Zazie dans le métro"
And Certified Copy by Kiarostami is also blue
Zazie dans le Metro
I absolutely love Zazie dans le Metro!
samb614ify i have to watch that.
“What a ludicrous display!”
I think he would get along with Graham Coxon
I didin't get the few titles that he mentioned, can someone write them down for me? Thanks!
He mentioned Sisters, Zazie dans le metro, Le Havre (talking about kaurismaki), he then mentions a film or director I don't understand and finally buster keaton...
AngryMidgetProd You're very nice. Thanks :)
Sisters, The Magic Flute, Zazie dans le metro, Persona, Le Havre, Les cousins
fiore3ky no problem, I missed a few tho haha
😍😍😍
The Magic Flute? Which performance? Metropolitan Opera with Kathleen Battle as Pamina? Moll sings Sarastro in that one if I remember correctly...... me super smart! Real opera smart!!
So what???? Ayoade dose not seem to have picked anything. He says he has already "RUINED" himself financially "ON A PRETTY PROFOUND LEVEL". But I was under the impression that these "Pick" videos were a give away!?!!!!! IMHO. (The Criterion G-A-W!!!! imho)
I'm shocked he didn't pass out from his repressed ability to emote all his feelings.
Then he goes home and puts on the Rocky Collection, stop lying to us Richard!
Basquiat
I don't know why, but character-wise....he seems more french than british.
Meh, there's nothing embarrasing about watching your favourite films if you're an ocular orientated person, Richard. It's no different than listenting to your favourite albums repeatedly. I must have watched The Shining at least a 100 times over the years... ok, that is embarrasing.
Oh shit its Dean Learner runnnnn
Why didn't you just get some guy off the street?
IT'S A ROBOT, ROY!
the internet
Moss yank the shelf out
I’ve seen all of his picks and I hated them all, but I like the things he’s in
Nobody ever mentions Finding Nemo?
Pretty boring...but I would love to see 'The double' coming to Criterion... a true masterpiece.
hamburger
Predator
Boring.
Boring list
I love you, Richard. But Zazie dans le Metro is nothing more than a collection of sped-up chase- sequences. Sometimes the Film does achieve the magic of a child's book, however, it is extremely tiresome
CANNOT stand this guy. Fml
Lmao you must suck then.
If Criterion features him on their channel, like Amoeba Records on their ' What's in My Bag' vids, you know they're a true artist.
This was the worst by this wonderful series, by far
No it wasn't. It was charming
your dog shit comment is by far the worst of this video series
Nobody gives a shit about what you think.

Actually, the other four segments featuring Ayoade were worse! This was a composite from the three-hour cut of the final visit.
Wow that really was pretty shit wasn't it?

Don't believe your own eyes and ears: Ayoade is the *It* guy of 2016; a severely unremarkable figure.
