Thank you for this video. I have a huge gopher problem where I live and I'm needing to invest in lots of hardware cloth. Thank you for demonstrating your gopher baskets. and I must say, your yard is beautiful!
We do sometimes as well, however, it was way too crowded for us and we just ran out of room. We also don't mind not having neighbors in two story houses staring down on us from next door either 🤣
What an AWESOME video; every moment of this video was so instructive and helpful. You are truly Master Gardeners, thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience. One question: I was surprised when you put the loquat tree into the ground without loosening any part of the root ball, can you share your philosophy on this? I've always thought you were supposed to loosen a root ball slightly, even if it's not root-bound. Thank you both so much! P.S. What state do you live in?
We don't typically make baskets for the smaller plants but we have started purchasing the pre made baskets that are made of chicken wire as we can get a two pack of 1 gallon baskets. They will break down with time but hopefully the plants will be more mature and have a healthy root system that can handle slight gopher pressure.
Using volcanic rock isn't an absolute necessity but if you would like to give it a try, they carry it at AirVol Block in SLO. You can get it in bulk or in .5 cubic foot bags.
Are bigger baskets needed for dwarf fruit trees than plants? Or do you think I could use 9x9 baskets for them? Seems like the roots will find their way through the openings no matter what but I'm not sure
Hi Chris, for the most part we try and match the sized cage with the plant or trees root ball. For even a dwarf fruit tree, we would likely use a 5 gallon gopher basket which may be similar to a 9x9 inch sized basket.
@@HomesteadandChill Thanks! We also have a problem here with voles as well as gophers and I've read that you need the 1/4 inch hardware cloth to keep voles out, they can get through 1/2". But I can only find 1/4" inch hardware cloth in 23 gauge not the usually recommended 19 guage. Do you think it would be ok or better to get 1/2" with 19 gauge and risk it?
@@Chris-dw6cu It seems like 1/4" hardware is the recommended size for voles and 23 gauge seems to be the thickness it comes in. I would just go with what is more readily available to you and hope the gauge is still thick enough to keep the voles out. Good luck!
Oh you mean regret? Ugh, I feel your pain!! They've killed a couple of our treed when we took a shortcut and used a flimsy pre-made cage instead of sturdy ones like this. One beautiful avocado and a weeping mulberry 😭 If you aren't opposed to trapping, the gopher hawk works great. Just please avoid using poison! ✌🏼
@HomesteadandChill yeah, actually back then I wasn't aware of the gopher issue and my neighbor never did anything about them and now they are invading my backyard from their side. I trapped like 6 of them the past 2 months. But sometimes you cannot tell where they are until they dig new mounts, but normally, that would be too late because the roots have already been eaten or destroyed. Gopher hawk is good for bigger gopher but usually not work for smaller ones because their tunnels are not deep enough for the trap to set in properly.

Thank you so much Pat, glad you found the video helpful!
Thanks for your detailed 'how to'. Particularly liked how you fashioned the bottom and then stood on it!
Youve inspired me for what to do in my front yard... I am currently working on my yard and yours is beautiful.
I miss this garden.

Excellent video! Beautiful garden! Thank you for the thorough step by step.

Hey Deanna! I would love to see how you irrigate/choose to irrigate parts of your garden. What types of irrigation do you use? Thanks!!
i have hugh gopher problem and don,t want to kill them, this is a solution to my problem. not just a raised bed solution. thank you
Have you run into root girdling with putting them in those baskets?
Great video! Did you make gopher baskets for your smaller plants? Or only trees?

Hi! I love your channel. Where do you get the small volcanic rock? I've looked everywhere and can't find it. I'm in Atascadero 😊

Great video, Easy to follow and great ideas, but why do we have to have music in the background?I find the music annoying and distracting.
Just curious, how come you didn’t put some diluted VIT B1 to prevent transplant shock?
