- The Gallagher (Irish: Ó Gallchobhair) family of County Donegal, formerly one of the leading clans of Cenél Conaill, and therefore of all Ulster, originated in the 10th century as a derivative of their progenitor Gallchobhar mac Rorcain, senior-most descendant of Conall Gulban, son of Niall Mór Noigíallach (Niall of the Nine Hostages). The O'Gallaghers held the High Kingship of Ireland during the early medieval period. They also held the rank of hereditary Marshal of the Kingdom of Tyrconnell, ruled by their kinsmen the O'Donnells, from the 14th until the early 17th century.
The good old days :)
Very helpful for my search one of my nephews has Gallagher in his family history.
Thanks, man, hope you are dojng well.
I have friends surnamed Gallagher, but they have been here in northeastern Kentucky since the late 18th century (1790s). In Mason County & Fleming County, the named is pronounced with the second "g" sounded. In Boyd County, the second "g" is silent, but the name is spelled, Galliher.
Interesting, I did hear alright that many names did change going from Ireland over.
I'd say everyone from Achill to Inishowen has a Gallagher in their family tree if you go back a few generations
That many?
I'm trying to find out more about the history of the quinn, and woods in the mid evil times and 100 yes war or how the name changed i was told they were related to the galligers

I have another nephew is searching for the free lunch pass his real family name is a English one, 😂😂😂 he thinks just because he was adopted he's entitled to everything 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 not a chance.
poor lad!
Many English, myself included have a lot of Irish heritage, of which I'm very proud so he could well have a lot of Irish in him. The only way to find out is to trace your genealogy and build a family tree. A lot of the Irish came over to England during the Great Hunger to power the industrial revolution and build a lot of the infrastructure, the canal and railways (they were known as navvies) and there were even migrations of people later than this so even though I know you say this in jest, mainly due to what the English did to the Irish, there will be very few English people without any Irish heritage in them, the invaders have become the invaded!!!
