    I have zero problems with the XL.

  • @98sevensix

    The striker works fine. You are using it the wrong way. Use the contoured end to strike/scrape the rod. It is a reliable product and your review did it a disservice.

    Man, I came close to buying one of these a few times but never did. Now I'm glad. Thanks!

      gideonstactical I think you were using the striker wrong. Instead of using the side did you try using the end of it like a match??

    • @harristee21
      @harristee21 9 років тому

      ***** ahh ok. I've never used or owned one. Was just looking at the shape of the striker. I was however looking at the possibility of getting one, based on this I probably won't.

    • @harristee21
      @harristee21 9 років тому

      ***** Thank you for telling me that. That is something else I was wondering about. There just seems to be so much torque on an open handle like that for it not to break

    I just bought the Exotac Polystriker XL and my DH tested it. It was difficult, to say the least. However, I saw another review elsewhere with the opposite conclusion. That puzzled me, so I did a little poking around and it seems there are two different Exotac Polystriker XL products...one is small like this one ("Ultralight") and the other is larger. It is the larger one that works better, apparently. Still, we are going to keep testing our small one according to the other recs people have given in the comments.

    • @kalulu1675
      @kalulu1675 Рік тому

      10 minutes later: I tried the Exotac Polystriker XL "Ultralight" again using the advice people gave below about using the END of the striker and burned a piece of note paper in the fireplace within maybe 5 minutes. This is the first time in my life that I have ever started a fire like this or even seen it done, which is why my DH grabbed the thing from me in the first place. I had no idea what I was doing. So...this WILL work if you understand the device. The one thing I find a little frustrating is the short length of the cord. That little plastic thingamajiggy at the end of the cord is for pushing the striker out of the handle and it feels a little limited with the striker on such a short leash. For me, it was easiest when I removed the striker to pull it to the end of the cord next to the pusher-outer. Gives more maneuvering when striking. I suppose you could just cut the cord and ditch the pusher-outer altogether. The striker is still easy to push out from the back. The cord DOES keep the two pieces from coming apart and getting lost, though. For just over $5, and "up to 10,000 strikes per rod," it seems good if not quite as comfortable to use as some other models.

    Wow, surprised your having so much trouble, I've had the XL for some time and it works great. Good design and throws tons of sparks.

  • @davidnguyen7486
    @davidnguyen7486 9 років тому +1

    Hi Aaron, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I have this same exotac polystriker, and mine throws great sparks. I will say I don't get good sparks when I try striking it on the side of the striker like you are in the video. But I do get great sparks when I use the grove of the striker almost like I'm striking a match on the ferro rod.

  • @0351nick-ch8ee
    @0351nick-ch8ee 3 роки тому +1

    Couldn't you just take a file to the striker? Cut some sharp edges???

    Thanks for the review. I've never even thought about purchasing this item.
    For my lightweight strikers as back-ups to my larger light-my-fire army strikers, I am most happy with the UST Sparkforce, the baby brother of the Strikeforce. At just 1 oz, they work great for me.

  • @ferraribcb
    @ferraribcb 9 років тому +1

    It strikes better when you use the end of the striker than the side. Point the end of the strikers handle towards the ground and push down while also flipping the strikers handle up.

    You were using the striker at the wrong angle, it needs to be scraped at 45 degress to ferro rod

    I would like to thank you on your honest review of this striker,i have watched numerous reviews and you are first person to tell it how it is. I have bought exotac and i share your opinion.

  • @MrPatagonicus

    I lost it a few months back, but the Polystriker XL I had worked just fine for me over the year I used it. I didn't use it in the same way you did in this video though. When striking, I would scrape the striker with the long side of it in the same orientation as the ferro rod itself. In my experience, that worked great.
    Perhaps you could try using this smaller striker with a parallel rather than perpendicular stroke, and see how it goes.

  • @fonimer

    Ok, first your tinder wasn't NEARLY fine enough. 30+ strikes? That's your first clue that your tinder is sub-par. Should ignite in less than 5. You would need an actual flame to ignite a handful of straw efficiently. There is nothing wrong with the device, just your technique.

    I have to disagree. I have the xl one and it works great. but I have now moved to 1/2 inch fire rod for half the price. but exotac does make great products.

    I received one of these for Christmas last year and had the same problem. I knew it wasn't going to replace my FireSteel.com Armageddon, but I figured I would at least give it a shot... Needless to say, I ended up just throwing it in the junk drawer in the kitchen where it has stayed since then.

    Some of the companies intend the end of.the striker to be used. Maybe to promote people to keep the rod up and down more to expedite sparks going down into your tinder and not out to everywhere? Try standing the rod up in a smaller bundle and then striking down with the end of the striker

    I think you’re using it on the side and it’s made to be struck on the other side.

    Hey folks, buy the "Light My Fire" Mora and you will be good to go. Ferro rod & knife combo. Both Swedish made. Just awesome!! I found mine online for 26 bucks, total out of pocket price. And this review was great. Good info to have on hand. Sometimes failure is there and this warning will I'm sure save a lot of people some money! Good job!!! Too bad for Exotac....but...maybe this review will help them rethink their striker.

    I didn't realize people actually used the strikers that come with firesteels, I've always used the spine of my knife and never had a problem with even the cheapest, crapiest ones I've had. Those strikers are all garbage in my opinion.

  • @MrKBartlett
    @MrKBartlett 8 років тому

    I have found that the supplied strikers are... Well, let's just say they are not very good! Hence, I have ground a 90° angle along the spine of them both, Yes I have the thin and the thicker version of the companion... :-P And as they are so cheap, I don't mind using the knife on a ferro-rod. (And yes, I do maintain them as though they cost me €200+.) on the Kydex sheath for the thick one, I have a ferro-rod included with it, and another with the hacksaw blade striker from the Boy Scout Store when I was on a trip. They have a great idea but fall short on the striker end. Have a good one! :-) Kev B.

    I totally agree the striker sucks. It works better if you place the rod in the groove to strike the rod, but it is awkward and would be difficult under stress.

    I have the Polystriker XL. I also found the striker to be useless. I really struggled to get good sparks. I have a couple of Light my Fire Army model firesteels and IMHO they are the best.
    I complained to the website I bought it from and they refunded my money and told me to keep it.

    Ive had similar issues....works much better if you use the other side of the striker...dont really know how to explain what I mean...strike with the flat side facing out, as opposed to the bowl shape facing out.
