I think the guys on the video missed the points of the relevance of the three disciple. The 5 characters all represent the flaw of the humankind and their strengths and weaknesses which we have inherited from our ancestors. 1. Tansang is about purity, naivity, stubborness, and righteousness - he demonstrated that although these qualities are good in intention and nature, sometimes we need to see things from a different perceptive. one needs to appreciate the views from other so that we can understand and help them become enlightened. simply being correct doesnt mean you are right. The relationship between him and Monkey is a demonstration of different point of view and forgiveness to one another when you understand the differences and wrong doing. his indecisiveness is an example of all people that second guess themselves when faced with the decision to do the right things. 2. Monkey is representation of ambition, ego, aggression, mischievous, righteous, but lacking in the importance of consequences. he is confident and ambitious with strong belief in what he does is right way of doing things. even with all the aggression and violence, deep down, he has a sense of kindness, forgiveness, and ability to lean from mistakes. we see a persona of strength but when dealing with Tansang, he realise that sometimes, you need to compromise is necessary for the greater good. his transformation from the Monkey king to Wukong demonstrates that we can all change and needs someone of Tansang with patience to allow him to grow. Throughout his journeys, his request for help is also a lesson that even though you may be invincible, help can always be found if you ask and needed. there are always someone stronger. One of the key adventure is the Bone Demon where the conflict of righteousness and conflict between right and correct can be demonstrated between monkey and tansang. 3. 'Pigsy' Bajie is a symbol of the weaker side of human nature, where we are consumed by person gain, fortune, lust, and desire for comfort. many examples throughout the journey will demonstrate that for his person gain, betrayal and disregard of consequences is of no concern to him. but he does learn lessons as he makes them and he is not shy about admitting his fault. yet he continues to make them repeatedly. this is a flaw in all of us throughout life as we make the same mistakes over and over again, simply because of these flaws we see in Bajie. the journey is to allow Bajie to learn to let go of these lust, wants, and greed, so that we become closer to be enlightened. 4. 'sandy' Sha Wujing represent the naive yet hot tempered character. he is hard working and follows the other two brothers but does has his strength and flaws. his lack of sympathy or grey view of righteouness is what we see in many people. he learns from Monkey and Bajie on what one must do and do what it takes to be a better person. although he is not a significant character throughout this journey, is the character, or personality within all of us that sits quietly behind the scene and have no care to intervene when necessary. 5. the horse (use to be the ocean dragon), hard working and at the original horse.. minor minor character. keep in mind that both Pigsy and Sandy were all once heavenly gods that were sent down for wrong doings. this is a lesson that we may fall from grace but we are still important and to appreciate the day that we can return to grace, if we work hard and improve ourselves. I love when you guys tell these old Chinese legends. I was adopted from China so my family did not know these stories to tell to me. But I have loved learning about them and connecting to my Chinese roots. Keep doing more!

It has an inferior version called Tian Gang 36 transformation which is mastered by one of his comrades in the Journey. Great to hear Lao Tzu pronounced authentically. I, too, used to love The Monkey King in my childhood (70s) and I believe it was responsible (together with The Water Margin) for my reflections on Taoism. I always saw their journey as a metaphor for our journey from materialism and arrogance towards enlightenment.
And pretty much everyone, including the author of the book, mostly forgets about the monk's horse (the white dragon horse), which was a dragon prince transformed into a horse as a punishment for eating the monk's original horse. After his introduction, he pretty much only did something in one chapter (transforming into a young woman and trying to rescue the monk), when Sun Wu Kong got kicked out of the group temporarily and the monk got captured by the Yellow Robe Demon.
I absolutely loved this! I've never heard this story before. I love the morals behind these things. Thanks for sharing :) ps- art is amazing, as usual.
I always loved journey to the west and always loved how the narrator would say in a sacastic tone when wukong pulled pranks, "and monkey, dear dear monkey....."
Akira Toriyama did not abduct anything, dragonball is actually and purposely base on the Journey to the West. Goku being Sun Wukong, Bulma as Xuanzang, Oolong as Zhu Bajie and Yamcha Being Sha Wujing. The story then develops to what DBZ is today
To say that Bulma is Xuangzang (Tripitaka) is a huge insult to this historic holy monk. When the story begins Bulma is a higher class girl dreaming of marrying a handsome man, she's completely selfish and there's no mention at all of any search for enlightenment. There's Buddhist themes in DBZ though. The whole Kamisama/Picollo duality being an example of it. Or how this character changes from being a fallen namek, to a Demon King, to what later would qualify as a Dharma guardian.
That was awesome narrating, you guys have the very same understanding in the essence of Wukongs story. And the drawings were awesome, portrayed the picture very well.
Those angles and that drawing. Simple but clear, my fancy and obsession of art styles. Not to much details for very expressive and shows every angle and emotion yet still fairly easy to draw and copy to then learn. I love it
Omg :'). The tv show Journey to the West was part of my childhood back in Ghana. Our favourite characters were Bajie, Shifu and the monkey king himself. How time flies! ^^
Story time: after the universe was created, the giant Pangu, who held up the skies, was dying (story for another time). So the first Daoist god created a giant iron pole of infinite mass capable of holding up the Milky Way as a fail safe in case the heavens were to fall again. The pole was forged from mystical black iron and caped in gold. Eventually as time passed, the original purpose of the pole was no longer needed and was acquired by king Yu the great. At this times it was the times of the great floods. Undersea earthquakes caused massive flooding in the kingdom of Yu. To solve this problem king Yu used the pole and stuck it in the middle of the ocean. It became known as the dìng hǎi shén zhēn, or simply the 定海神珍 (the mystical needle that nailed the ocean floor). With the pole at the center of the Eastern Sea, the floods finally stopped. And there it remained for thousands of years. Being so massive it could not be moved; not even the Eastern dragon king who lived there could move it. The iron pole stood by the Eastern dragon king's palace for so long it began to rust and turned a shade of bright red. However, being magic, the staff did not erode away and continued to calm the ocean floors until 500 years before the events in the famous Chinese epic: Journey to the West. And this is the origin story of the Ruyi Jingu Bang (the gold caped staff that followed your every whim). Sun Wukong actually obtained the staff fair and square as for the Eastern dragon king gave it to him willingly. What happened was that Wukong came looking for a weapon worthy of his great strength and dragon king Ao Guan was know for his treasures. Eventually growing tired of all the unworthy weapons that Ao Guan offered him, Wukong demanded for the heaviest weapon they had. Ao Guang's wife had a brilliant plan. She convinced her husband to offer Sun Wukong the giant iron pole that stood near their palace knowing that no one could possibly lift it. Ao Guan at first did not like this idea but then thought he had nothing to lose anyways since he thought the pole to be useless. He declared that that the iron pole was a great weapon of power not knowing that it really actually was, and told Wukong he could have it if he could lift it. Naturally Wukong was powerful enough to lift the then 17,550 lbs iron pole with ease. But what really made Ao Guan really regret his decision was when Wukong displayed the magical properties of the staff. After seeing how Wukong handled the magical glowing staff and how it could changeand grow to sizes that reached the heavens, Ao Guan realized what a mistake he made. Ao Guan became angry and later reported to heaven that Sun Wukong "stole" his "most prized possession". The story continues from there...
There is an pretty old animation of the Journey to the west and it was my absolute favourite show as a child, we have all DVDs at home and just a month ago I watched all episodes again and I felt so incresibly refreshed. The Monkey King (Wu Kong) was my absolute favorite hero and he is still my absolute favourite hero of all time. He is an incredibly deep character and I am so happy to be one of the thousands children who watched this amazing show/animation. No matter how much I love Dragonball, I can't stop to see Goku as a rip off of Wu Kong unfortunately. Wu Kong is ALWAYS going to be the most realistic, wise, still heroic and most human protagonist ever and I hope I'm not the only one who saw him as an idol and a role model as a child (and still now as a respective figure). A masterpiece, honestly.
CrimsonMeme haha not just Goku, there are so many animes that have the character Goku in them: Saiyuki (which is literally a rip off of the whole plot even the tittle is literally the japanese version of Xiyouji but its good though), Naruto (there's a minor character in there thats called Son Goku but he has nothing in commom with wukong apart from their name), Highschool DxD (the Goku in there that has literally the same backstory, personality etc. as Wukong), Inuyasha(who is said in the anime to be descendant of the legendary hero Sun Wukong) . There's probably more but these are just a few right out of my head.
Candyroxnrulz I only remembered Goku from Dragonball but yeah now that you say it I remember the one in Naruto and also the Inuyasha one now. I wonder if it's good as it's a proof that Xiyouji is just amazing or sad because of the rip offs.
So true, and the people who watch these series and haven't watched xiyouji always thinks that they are all rip offs of dragon ball when dragon ball ITSELF is actually a rip off.
Candyroxnrulz It's going to stay a mystery for me, how there are more people knowing Dragonball than Xiyouji in America or Europe. I've never met a non-chinese person who even heard of it, it's saddening.
Candyroxnrulz yup agree and if you think of it ... and put both Goku and Inuyasha together you kinda get Wukong Goku's innocence and stupidity with Inuyasha's jerk side , and always beeing rude to everybody and cocky and things like this plus , Wukong's crown is like Inuyasha's beads necklace that Kaede put on him so Kagome could make him sit :)))) goku has uloong what is a pig and wants to marry inuyasha has miroku who wants to have kids with every girl he meets :)) both uloong and miroku are some pervy companions who wants the girls :)) i think at Goku the reference is more obvious about Wukong ... i saw Inuyasha a long time ago and i don't remember they saying Inuyasha is the descendant of Wukong but maybe you're right i don't know for sure ^^
Candyroxnrulz This guy: nyuununo.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/journey-to-the-west-dicky-cheung.jpg Though I believe in the 2nd season of the show, he's no longer in it and replaced by Benny Chan.
Well, there was one season with Dicky ( who plays as The Monkey King) and then some complications happened withy the company or the contract or something, then there was a second season with benny ( who replaced Dicky and played as the Monkey King ).
crazy mode also could be the the fake monkey king, six eared macaque. In original novel, both real and fake monkey kings r EXACTLY the same, even the so called unique weapon, the golden staff. And ppl r still debating about whether the Wu Kong who continues the journey is the real one or not. So, if the developers wants to do something “surprising”, they may go the way which the fake monkey king survived and player gonna play Wu Kong in some kinda next life to face the fake monkey king for revenge. Just an idea
Why is everyone from black myth, anime, and other stuff I came here because as a kid my grandpa had told me stories about the monkey king or sun wukong and I just love the monkey king til this day
My favourite is when Monkey calls a demon a "poofter". Also the episode "such a nice monster" where a monster just wants to be a cute puppy but everyone is afraid of him. With the episodes that were redubbed you can pick up all the original stories easier. I can watch movies on the topic without subtitles as I already know the storyline.
Dragonball Z didn't steal the ideas from the Monkey King, Goku represents the Monkey King :p. DBZ is a fanfiction story of the Monkey King sort of imo XD.

They have the power to destroy planets.
Omg i was just telling my coworker yesterday about this. I love the cartoon version. I grew up watching it. Practically saw every episode at least 10 times
This video is great. My Si Fu told me this story, but I could not really remember it. With this nice illustrated video it will be easy to remember the story.
Probably not, as many Asians already know these stories and have seen a million adaptations of the same thing. Betting it's either a new story or a new twist on the old tale.
I just love the Monkey King. A teacher read this story to our first year class when I was little. I didn't learn how to read until I was in my late 20's because I am dyslectic and back when I was a child they did not understand anything about this disorder. I still remember how I felt that day when the teacher read that story.
+HuangYanPing It's by Flora Li, check out ChinaUncensored's video. They stole the animation and added their own narration. Would be nice if they would at least give credit.
I saw this on China Unsensored. I'm glad that you guys picked this up, you guys tell it in better detail. I want to know about the other 3 classics too. Please do those sometime.
hahahah, this is the most easy story in the four great ancient chinese novel. other three are much difficult to explain in short video. because Journey To The West you could ignore the specific process (81 tribulations), just know what happen at beggin, how wukong study stunt skill and fight with Taoism god(government system of the heaven, ) and then he loss the game with Buddha and he sufer under the mountain 500 years and then buddha arrange a team for these 4 people(a monk, a pig, a mokey, a monster ), process is surfer also a Practice by 81 tribulations(amazing process) then they finished the job and get promotion, that's all.......but this story have much deep meaning for showing Society and government in that time and other 3 novels, Wow, you can't ignore the process and many people in the process, three Kingdom is well know in japan and korea these asia country. almost every body know this Novels, but the story is very wonderful so you have to read the book or watch the drama(usually 60-80 sets ) so you could enjoy it, a short video will never show the beauty of these story

You guys should make a series of the Journey To the West! I had a collection of CDs of the Journey to the West when I was younger and it was my favorite show!
The original Dragon Ball was also based on the Monkey King, hence Goku having the same name, tail, staff & cloud as the Monkey King. Than Dragon Ball Z storyline was inspired by Superman
i grew up hearing many monkeyking stories and watchin a variety of movies of the monkey king. even so this was a great video, this is why i sub to otgw. please do many more vids like this, thankyou.
Well, I heard that the sand monk in the original story was indeed the weakest physically & magically among the group, but he wasn't useless because he was the smartest among them. He was the strategist for the group.
I adore this story!!! Read the translated books and this, dreams of red mansions and three kingdoms are amongst my fave reads!!! He is so violent yet cheeky! 🐒🐒🐒 takes on heaven, steals from the dragons that amazing golden staff and ... Oh, I could go on!!! Great topic gentlemen!
I'm part Asian and I haven't heard of the story or read it, but I do know it was the inspiration for the greatest anime of all time Dragon Ball. Thank you Akira Toriyama!
Whatched the tv series as a kid and no idea what was going on half the time, they made the monkey king look kinda scary...lol Thanks for telling this story i've learnt so much.
I know I'm 5 years late but better late than never but , dragon ball as a franchise itself is based around the life of sun wukong Akira toriyama himself even stated that goku is the Japanese interpretation of sun wukong so they stole more than just the cloud
2:24 of course dragon ball stole it. Dragon ball started as a parody of journey to the west in the first couple volumes. It's why goku has a flying cloud, an expanding staff and a monkey tail.
Btw, to respond about why the other two (pig & ox) was on the journey. IMO those three are representing the three roots of evil in Buddhism. as for the monkey king, is DOSA (hate/aversion). the pig is LOBHA (greed) and the ox is MOHA (ignorant/delusion) last, the priest himself is a wisdom that can be use to bring/break free those 3 roots of evil. we, who haven't been enlighten yet are still holding these roots of evil, and with enough wisdom and practice, we can be freed from them. as you can tell, we are acting more/less like the monkey king when we are angry. then we also have the greed like the pig, and last we are somewhat ignorant with several things (well, not as much as the ox, i hope) the moral of this monkey king story is so deep that in most cases it actually teach people how to life a better life and learn life lesson from those 3, eerr.. 4 characters
Comixs-Inc. oh yeah. now you said it. I think he is an ogre. water, river, or lake ogre. not sure. i used to said he is an ox because that's how me and my brother describe him. lol. because all of the other character are taken from an animal. and he resemble an ox because one thing or another. but now that you said it. i just remember that he is a demon, like an ogre or something like that.
One of my favourite stories ever! I used to be obsessed with them when I was little.. I still have those Sun Wu Kong DVDs.. though it is all scratched because I watched it too many times.. haha Good memories!
I’d just like to make it clear dragonball was based on journey to the west and gokus original design was a monkey. Akira toriyama the creater has stated this before so I wouldn’t say stole.
Facts let’s not act like people can’t take inspiration from something/pay homage to something. Even then Toriyama expanded on his own story and made it his own. “Stole” would be the wrong word for sure
I liked the video, but I think you've forgotten a very important detail... This book is actually inspired on a much older book (from the Tang dynasty), called Journey to the west in the Tang Dynasty... Actually, the monk is based on the true budist monk Xuanzang... The book from the 7 st century, tells the story of Xuanzang, a monk, who had some doubts about the chibese budist translations from the time, and he planed a journey to India, to read the texts, in their original language... He travelled for 16 years, and he passed by, what nowadays are Uzbequistan and Afganistan (yes, they went arround the Himalaias)... It's an amazing book for someone who enjoys antropology... Xuanzang, not only described the multiple cultures, some of their legends, what do they use to eat and wear ... and the most important, their cultural behaviors, and concluded that most of wich, was related to sun exposition and the fertility of their lands (no irony, the guy was a 7st century genius)... Of course, you've got a lot of references to budist temples... It's a great peace of oriental history.. Ps. Sorry about my english, i'm portuguese...
Wow. The references of their culture and tradition in Afghanistan and the like to the Sun is symbolic of Zoroastrianism symbolism and belief in the light of the Lord God Ahura Mazda (Supreme Wisdom).
It's interesting how Goku was based on this guy, as was DB based on Journey to the West, but it really started to diverge later on, yet in Super it's kind of coming back around to be very Journey to the West-ish, mostly with Goku and the Gods and stuff.

That is why I love the Chinese and Japanese culture, especially Chinese it's so rich and beautiful. Especially The Monkey King, my favorite character. Anything stories, items, pictures I love it. And side note, is it me or does everything from names of people and things, to just the phasing of the language itself sounds melodic to me, maybe it's the musician in me.
Samuel Wallace And, You probably haven't seen the Anime itself. Also, As We speak, there's a Tournament in DBS that requires the 'Side Characters' and in Z itself There are plenty of shining moments for Z by the side characters. But K
Emanuel Tejeda I haven't seen all of the episodes, only the Android and Cell Sagas, and the beginning of the Majin Bu saga, and throughout that run the side characters don't do much.
+The HD Channel - Vlogs, Reviews & Stuff Are you telling me that people came from space are inspire by superman so that mean sun wukong was also inspired by superman because he fight people from space/monsters/gods too??????? LMFAO Did you blind by superman and Sun-Wukong oufits, fly with cape on plus long armors/clothes????, fights monsters to protect others???, now superman wanna be god too, eyes lazer, weak to magic and objects???, came from a fucking ball, etc......... Superman becomes Sun Wukong. Japanese version and American version of Sun Wukong.
It would make sense if that “magical rock” was a space shuttle, “that came from the heavens”(up above) .... maybe the creator of Dragon Ball Akira Toriyama was onto something. They were on point with the planet Nibiru(beerus) that the old ancient Sumerians talked about..all this Hinduism, Buddhism a whole bunch of stuff are all connected.. even Star Wars based Han Solo on the monkey. Idk if there’s a right or wrong, whether what’s copying what, they’re all giving a story and testimony on everything. Like the Bible, Chinese mythology are but many cyphers willing to be decoded in smaller terms, for personal insights
When I was younger, most kids were obsessed with heroes like Superman or Batman, but not me. This was the hero I was obsessed with.
Mine too.

Me too!
YESSSS SAME WITH ME!!!!!
Simon Li yeaaassss!!!!

Nice explanation bro!
Deep...
This comment should be higher
Thanks for that bro
Why do dragons or serpents symbolize wish granting gods?
Oh come on, Sandy isn't TOTALLY useless. He's the mediator in the group. When everyone else is having a hissy fit and yelling at each other he's the one who at least TRIES to get everyone to chill.
If you wat the useless one, it is bailongma tbh
he's the mom friend
I love when you guys tell these old Chinese legends. I was adopted from China so my family did not know these stories to tell to me. But I have loved learning about them and connecting to my Chinese roots. Keep doing more!
I'm the opposite, I grew up in China watching the show ... though I didn't understand any of it I still liked it.
Lol same as my friend BILLY
Bethany Rose Best wishes from China, we will always see you as one of us. Hope you get along well with both China and the country you grew up.
Being half asian and spending my childhood with my asian side this was one of my bedtime stories haha
Kiara C ...how does one read the whole story on one night...
+Collision SC- [insert meme] One does not simply read the whole story in one night.
XLpug ..is true
Is as thick as a dictionary
Kiara C Same, exactly same as me
Kiara C same here! I loved it so much haha
This guy fought countless armies, which included the strength of three deities, survived in a furnace which gave him powers, pissed on Buddha's hand, and beat up the king of the underworld?
My new favorite hero
😁😁
👍👍
After watching this video, I now realise how faithful the 1986 TV series stayed to the lore. I think that series is the best adaptation of the novels.
2:00 He learns 72 tranformations?! Oh my goodness, it now makes sense why on Jackie Chan Adventures the monkey talisman could turn anything into animals!!!!
OMG I LOVED THAT SHOW AS A KID!!!!!!
Actually 72 is merely a figure number, the full name is Di Sha 72 transformation which was associated with the secret technique of ancient eastern astrology created by Taoists. XLpug that's why Goku has so many forms
Irony, that version is voiced by Ryuusei Nakao in Japanese.
That means Frieza has voiced a closer-to-original ripoff-reference of his nemesis.
who does the drawings for these? they're really cute

I've ready Journey to the West, it is a fantastic story and I suggest anyone would read it. It is just really wonderful.
there's also a Cantonese show of it but they only speak cantonese
Sharni Venessa. is it subtitled?
McbrideStudios in Chinese
McbrideStudios what translation did you read
Actually it really is great in a story prospect because it was written as a book. So it doesn’t has many plot holes

How did people back then make all this up? I'm genuinely fascinated how they came up with these legends.
What a world without Netflix will do to ya.
I absolutely loved this! I've never heard this story before. I love the morals behind these things. Thanks for sharing :) ps- art is amazing, as usual.
My kids and I adored this. Great work.
The story then develops to what DBZ is today
nvalenc1 That's an insult to Sha Wujing haha
+nvalenc1 yeah I actually realized that, when I went to china and saw the tv series(I saw dragon ball and dragon ball z earlier)
+nvalenc1 The king of the underworld is actually the same in DBZ too lol
nvalenc1. N it was amazing
Black myth: Wukong brought me here
Hahaha me too
Have you guys watched OSP's summary of JTTW? It's a good place to start.
Welp now that the game is out, how are you enjoying it?
Those angles and that drawing. Simple but clear, my fancy and obsession of art styles. Not to much details for very expressive and shows every angle and emotion yet still fairly easy to draw and copy to then learn. I love it
Omg :'). The tv show Journey to the West was part of my childhood back in Ghana. Our favourite characters were Bajie, Shifu and the monkey king himself. How time flies! ^^
Really here cause God of Highschool and Black Myth Wukong
I'm here because of monkey Kid
I literally binged all of god of high school today and now here I am 😂
@@anthonylopez6679 BROOO ME TOOOO
@@Michael-rk2gg yessss my guy there also making a game of the monkey king too
I came here because of Sayuki Reload, Dragonball, The Forbidden Kingdom & The God of High School 🐒
The story continues from there...
and thus came the inspiration of Bo, Goku's power pole.
Thanks as a kid i watch this for 10 of thousand times with the new release of the game black myth wukong its nice but i still love this video
Btw way i like my own comment
Candyroxnrulz
I only remembered Goku from Dragonball but yeah now that you say it I remember the one in Naruto and also the Inuyasha one now.
Candyroxnrulz yup agree
and if you think of it ... and put both Goku and Inuyasha together you kinda get Wukong
Goku's innocence and stupidity with Inuyasha's jerk side , and always beeing rude to everybody and cocky and things like this
plus , Wukong's crown is like Inuyasha's beads necklace that Kaede put on him so Kagome could make him sit :))))
goku has uloong what is a pig and wants to marry
inuyasha has miroku who wants to have kids with every girl he meets :))
both uloong and miroku are some pervy companions who wants the girls :))
i think at Goku the reference is more obvious about Wukong ... i saw Inuyasha a long time ago and i don't remember they saying Inuyasha is the descendant of Wukong but maybe you're right i don't know for sure ^^
I came here from watching Lego Monkie Kid, now it brought me here this year!
When I was little, there was this TV series being aired in my country that's depicting this story, starring Dicky Cheung and I love so much! :D
***** Who the heck is Dicky Cheung? (he has a "cool" name btw)
***** Who the heck is Dicky Cheung? (he has a "cool" name btw)
Candyroxnrulz This guy: nyuununo.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/journey-to-the-west-dicky-cheung.jpg
Though I believe in the 2nd season of the show, he's no longer in it and replaced by Benny Chan.
Why is he called Dicky though? And who's Benny?
Well, there was one season with Dicky ( who plays as The Monkey King) and then some complications happened withy the company or the contract or something, then there was a second season with benny ( who replaced Dicky and played as the Monkey King ).
I love stories about Sun Wukong.
I'm amazed by how fearless he is.
Who else here from the Wu Kong game trailer
🙌
Yerrr, who was the guy that stopped the monkey king from hitting/killing the wolf? Was it himself? I wanted to understand the lore
Its was him, the original wukong holds the golden staff while his clones uses ordinary wooden staff
@@tyst.v3732 in my understanding, the monkey king killing the wolf is a clone or a hair of the real monkey king
crazy mode also could be the the fake monkey king, six eared macaque.
Are you talking about the 80s series?
I am an catholic man but love taoism and buddhism for the great traditional truths they bring for the human species. thanks guys! wonderful stuff
Dragonball Z didn't steal the ideas from the Monkey King, Goku represents the Monkey King :p. DBZ is a fanfiction story of the Monkey King sort of imo XD.

Omg i was just telling my coworker yesterday about this. I love the cartoon version. I grew up watching it. Practically saw every episode at least 10 times
Black myth: Wukong gang, Assemble!
this is one of my favorites!! I remembered watching a series based on this story with my grandfather.
Hahahaha! That's So Good! Monkey King's So Cool, He's So Strong, And Handsome! 🤩
ooh mk
Honestly I could geek out about this old book forever it's so amazing
the other guy the sandy monk people calculated that his line:"大师兄师傅被妖怪抓走了“ was most most said in the TV series .....
the storytelling voice Dan and Mike used in this is so awesome 😂😂
I'm sorry, but the way you draw The Monkey King looks like Curious George as a Teen 😭
FR
It also reminds me of the anime of Starzinger as well. The monkey is like Starzinger.
This video is great. My Si Fu told me this story, but I could not really remember it. With this nice illustrated video it will be easy to remember the story.
Who's here after Black Myth: Wukong
Me for sure.
This is my first hearing about these stories and im kinda confused, is this going to be the story line for the new game?
Probably not, as many Asians already know these stories and have seen a million adaptations of the same thing. Betting it's either a new story or a new twist on the old tale.
I love these stories video you guys make. I hope you'll continue with many more! 😁
I just love the Monkey King. A teacher read this story to our first year class when I was little. I didn't learn how to read until I was in my late 20's because I am dyslectic and back when I was a child they did not understand anything about this disorder. I still remember how I felt that day when the teacher read that story.
Best bedtime story ever ! ^.^
This is really fun to watch I really like the drawings it reminds me of overly sarcastic productions who have a series of journey to the west
Who did the drawing? No credits? :(
Oh yea the drawings is so awesome
They did it i think
It's totally AWESOME
Ikr! Its amazing!!
Please do those sometime.
hahahah, this is the most easy story in the four great ancient chinese novel. other three are much difficult to explain in short video. because Journey To The West you could ignore the specific process (81 tribulations), just know what happen at beggin, how wukong study stunt skill and fight with Taoism god(government system of the heaven, ) and then he loss the game with Buddha and he sufer under the mountain 500 years and then buddha arrange a team for these 4 people(a monk, a pig, a mokey, a monster ), process is surfer also a Practice by 81 tribulations(amazing process) then they finished the job and get promotion, that's all.......but this story have much deep meaning for showing Society and government in that time
and other 3 novels, Wow, you can't ignore the process and many people in the process, three Kingdom is well know in japan and korea these asia country. almost every body know this Novels, but the story is very wonderful so you have to read the book or watch the drama(usually 60-80 sets ) so you could enjoy it, a short video will never show the beauty of these story
God of High School brought me here😂😂
...
So this was Mori's origin, huh?
Me too 😂😂😂😂
Same 😂
Bro sameee
Same Bro
On god
Thank you. That was fun. Thanks for the honest banter I understand more clearly now.
Dragon Ball's creator, Akira Toriyama, based the original Dragon Ball manga on Journey to the West.. give it a read!

@@johncreator346 that is the craziest thing I've read
And sun Waukong inspired by hindu god hanuman so goku is indirectly inspired by lord hanuman
You guys should make a series of the Journey To the West! I had a collection of CDs of the Journey to the West when I was younger and it was my favorite show!
I wouldn't be surprised if any western person find this story weird af. I don't know, the story made more sense in chinese and when I was younger.
makes more sense than Harry Potter or Lord of the rings.
+supermonkeyyyyyy Nah we've seen Dragon Ball
Lol nope these stories are awesome and I'm from Brazil lol. The Chinese culture and stories are so interesting!
I always liked this story as a kid, there was another one I loved as a kid about a boy who was born in a peach but I can't remember the name of it.

Favorite novel of all time! I still remember watching the tv. series from 1996! It was the best!
The original Dragon Ball was also based on the Monkey King, hence Goku having the same name, tail, staff & cloud as the Monkey King. Than Dragon Ball Z storyline was inspired by Superman
A character who can goes toe to toe with superman, Goku and Saitama.
I enjoyed this a lot, please make more.
i grew up hearing many monkeyking stories and watchin a variety of movies of the monkey king. even so this was a great video, this is why i sub to otgw. please do many more vids like this, thankyou.
Well, I heard that the sand monk in the original story was indeed the weakest physically & magically among the group, but he wasn't useless because he was the smartest among them. He was the strategist for the group.
This reminds me of Saiyuki. Really good anime and really close to the money king story. :)
Who came here after God Of High School anime?
hey i have watched that anime and didn't find any reference I guess
@Kisan Patel manwha? whats that?
@Kisan Patel okay so its basically a manga but korean one
Whatched the tv series as a kid and no idea what was going on half the time, they made the monkey king look kinda scary...lol Thanks for telling this story i've learnt so much.
I know I'm 5 years late but better late than never but , dragon ball as a franchise itself is based around the life of sun wukong
Akira toriyama himself even stated that goku is the Japanese interpretation of sun wukong so they stole more than just the cloud
My grandpa used to tell those stories during bed time and this video made me feel nostalgic. I love this story so much XD
2:24 of course dragon ball stole it. Dragon ball started as a parody of journey to the west in the first couple volumes. It's why goku has a flying cloud, an expanding staff and a monkey tail.
Great video, watching the artwork unfold is a great touch :D
Btw, to respond about why the other two (pig & ox) was on the journey.
IMO those three are representing the three roots of evil in Buddhism.
as for the monkey king, is DOSA (hate/aversion).
the pig is LOBHA (greed)
and the ox is MOHA (ignorant/delusion)
last, the priest himself is a wisdom that can be use to bring/break free those 3 roots of evil.
we, who haven't been enlighten yet are still holding these roots of evil, and with enough wisdom and practice, we can be freed from them.
as you can tell, we are acting more/less like the monkey king when we are angry.
then we also have the greed like the pig, and last we are somewhat ignorant with several things (well, not as much as the ox, i hope)
the moral of this monkey king story is so deep that in most cases it actually teach people how to life a better life and learn life lesson from those 3, eerr.. 4 characters
+Leonard Halim Yes, the story all the more interesting when you understand the Buddhist philosophy behind it.
+Leonard Halim
ox? i thought sandy was an eel or water demon
i know he was once a general in heaven i think
but i don't think he was an ox
Comixs-Inc.
oh yeah. now you said it. I think he is an ogre.
water, river, or lake ogre. not sure.
i used to said he is an ox because that's how me and my brother describe him. lol.
because all of the other character are taken from an animal. and he resemble an ox because one thing or another.
but now that you said it. i just remember that he is a demon, like an ogre or something like that.
yeah, he was a simple river demon. he was once the heavenly curtain general
but when you are a kid, the only thing you really care about is the monkey king kicking ass :P
This was one of my favorite story :) brings back all the childhood memories.... Thanks for animating it ☺️
Can you talk about the romance of the three kingdoms? It would be so interesting to hear you talk about something so historical. :)
Oh, the best explanation ever!
More than words... Drawings!
Wow. The references of their culture and tradition in Afghanistan and the like to the Sun is symbolic of Zoroastrianism symbolism and belief in the light of the Lord God Ahura Mazda (Supreme Wisdom).
achou esses livros em português? Gostaria de ler tb
Very nice story, thank you so much for sharing this story, I will tell this story to my kids.
Come here because the latest game trailer: Dark Myth Wu Kong!
It's interesting how Goku was based on this guy, as was DB based on Journey to the West, but it really started to diverge later on, yet in Super it's kind of coming back around to be very Journey to the West-ish, mostly with Goku and the Gods and stuff.
Came here after watching black myth : wukong gameplay
I first learned of this story when I went to China 2 years ago and have been a fan ever since. :D

I really enjoyed how good some of the drawings wereGreat job :)
so this is like Goku, Balma, Ulong and Yamcha going on a journey to find the dragon balls?
The original Dragon Ball was based on the Monkey King, than Dragon Ball Z storyline was inspired by Superman
Well DBZ got the uselessness of its side-characters right. So, credit for faithful adaptation.

And, You probably haven't seen the Anime itself.
Also, As We speak, there's a Tournament in DBS that requires the 'Side Characters' and in Z itself There are plenty of shining moments for Z by the side characters.
But K

THIS BRINGS BACK SO MANY MEMORIES OF THAT SHOW ;-; ahhhhh my childhood
Everyone is talking about Dragon Ball Z but im here for God Of Highschool
This is my favor children story when I was growing up! Love it!
Here because a girl told me I remind her of this monkey king. Stayed because of PREVIOUSLY ON DRAGONBALL !!!
