That's the best way...move the original queen into a nuc, and introduce the Carni queen....that way you simulate a swarm more naturally. Carniolan genetics will also help with calming your hive down somewhat when you have to get in it to work...Carni's are known for being super calm. If you decide that you like the Carni genetics better you can always sell off the other queen and reintroduce the other bees in the nuc to the original hive.
I watch a lot of different videos on UA-cam and Emmy's bee videos are definitely my favorite! Thank you for sharing your bees with us and teaching us about beekeeping!!
I can't believe I've been watching you and your bees for almost 3 seasons of Bee Keeping! I don't really like Bees but I understand how important they are to nature so I try my best to be nice to them when I can thanks to your videos.
A local bee keeper recently put in a small hive at the community garden. We’ve been seeing a lot more bees this summer in our garden. We plant lots of high pollen and nectar flowers along with our veggies and use absolutely no pesticides ever. I love watching your videos about the bees. It’s nice to see such healthy hives and someone who really cares about the bees.
@@eldritchdoll yes. I started with running 8 frame medium equipment and the queen would go up in the 4th and 5th boxes. I run excluders on top of the 3rd box now. It's hard to keep them from swarming if I don't split them in the spring. Some swarm anyway. They can plug up medium frames pretty fast.
@@mhcmhco in case the original hive failed to requeen , I would still have a queen I could combine the two of them. Nobody likes to see half their bees fly off and possibly not surviving.
@@melissamcclain34 I would be happy if they were consistently once a week. I feel like there's sometimes pretty long gaps in between. I always used to save them from drowning in my grandma's pool when I was a kid. And I would talk to them and watch them dry off. Always before they flew away I would say, tell your friends not to sting me, I'm one of the good guys. But I have friends who literally just freak out and try to swat or kill them. I learned through watching lot of bee keeping videos (lol) that some bee keepers spray sugar water on the bees to calm them instead of smoke. Maybe it would work well for you without pushing the bees (and queen) down into the hive, plus the bees get a nice little snack to lick off
That's awesome that you got to hang out with Michel Palmer! I love his seminars and learn so much from him. I would suggest you not feel bad about using smoke to keep your bees calmer. I don't want to assume to tell you how to work your bees but for myself, I want to have all of the workers in my hive smell a good amount of smoke so they all think there is a fire coming. That is why smoke calms bees, they think a fire is coming so they all immediately start filling up their honey stomachs in case they have to leave the hive because it is burning down. It also disrupts the alarm pheromone and keeps the bees from organizing against you like you are seeing. I do think you were correct in using just a little smoke at the start so you didn't chase your queen too far down. I love your videos! So keep up the good work!
Fascinating stuff! So much to learn. I am glad to be sure you are human tho. Not a sprite in disguise haha!😈 The bees were pissy today and you actually had to suit up. Reassured! Watching your videos makes me confident that I will never have bee hives. It's way more work than you ever would imagine🐝No! I took the secret passageway
Probably would have been best to split that big hive 50-50 with the two queens. That big hive will still want to make swarm cells and will with those fresh eggs. I understand you only want a few hives and want to make honey, so those kinds of hives (honey production) you constantly live on the edge of swarming during the honey flow. You have to keep opening up the broodnest and checking every week diligently for swarm cells. Queen Excluders will also put pressure on the Queen as her space gets limited. She wants to continue up through the spring. I dont use excluders and if she lays in the supers, I just add another box. Eventually that brood hatches out and the bees back fill it with nectar as her laying slows after the equinox. More hives (splits) or bigger hives (honey) you can't diminish your work and attention to the hives. You always have to stay ahead of the bees or they will "get away from you" ...literally!
Loving your videos, I just found them this morning, one suggestion, maybe switch to deep frames for the brood boxes and they won't feel so crowded as often. Thanks for sharing your bee experience with us.
May I suggest you use a spare box, or at least remove 2 or 3 frames when searching, The space between frames with only one removed is small enough that she can move across. Second box is better as it is you are moving the fames away. Also when you shake of frames do it onto a sheet outside the hive, shaking inside between the frames really rattles the hive and increases the stress. It makes the hive feel it is under attach, and kills bees creating alarm sent. (of course many people will think differently).
I caught two swarms last week at the same time but haven't checked to see if they both have queens. I was so tempted to buy a nuc this year but hesitated and the local supplier sold out. Good thing I waited for free bees.
If you really like the genetics of the RIBA queen, you could have done a walk away split and let a new queen from RIBA get made. There are ways to make that split and still make honey.
I was telling you about the off grid with Doug and Stacy natural Bee Keeping. Well today they visited a lavender farm. Can you grow lavender up in your area? Your big backyard you could grow lavender for your bees which would be amazing. But then you could also sell the lavender like this lady does.
I looked back at the date you were in the hive placing your new queen and that day happened to be a leaf day (in gardening terms: Biodynamic gardening) On leaf days you want to avoid going into the hive. On leaf days the bees are not happy with you being in the hive. Ideally you want to work the hive on flower and fruit days. During these days the bees are more gentle.
I watch you and Jim from Vino Farms. I pay attention to regional dialects and accents. You both say syrup and “sear-up”. In the Midwest people say “sir-up”.
With all those Queen Cells that you killed it's too bad you weren't in the market for selling Queens like the guy that sold you yours if that made sense, probably not. Yeah but wow never seen so many queen cups, amazing. It looks like you have more bees than last year, love these bee videos it's very stress relieving even though you're getting attacked though hopefully that will get better.
They become larvae that is a new queen (the only bee that lays fertilized eggs). Queen cells can be put into a new box set up and bam you have a new hive (if you give them the proper resources to thrive of course). Having the queen in the hive regulates unity- but when there’s another queen bee larvae in her cell getting fed by the workers etc when it emerges it must fight to the death with the other queen bee. There can only be one. Sometimes the old queen bee will fly off when the colony becomes too large. During the “Swarming Season”, the colony produces that second queen and when she leaves the hive, she flies with a swarm of worker bees. So it’s ideal to not have too many cells with capped queen larvae if you live near people you don’t want swarms of Queen bees with no hive to settle in.
Wow, what type of bees are those? I rarely see bees get that way. Do bee usually get nasty when they want to swarm? Try looking into a Queen from Singing Cedar Apiaries--amazing queens.
I hope you don't mind my asking ( I'm bee ignorant) but what exactly is a Carneolan (probably spelled that wrong..lol) queen? I think of myself as keeping bees vicariously through you, as I am deadly allergic to stings.
3:00 Combining hives is not a technique to "reduce inventory". After you produce all the way, it's a technique to save resources from weak hives. ... if the hive won't make it, all you wind all you'll do is wind up losing a box of bees Without a Queen, without sufficient resources, or you'll be feeding that Hive like crazy.
Correct me if I'm wrong..so the queen cups produce a new queen therefore fight with current queen..they kill each other then bees swarm? (Leave) is this right?
@@samanthad5876 No, the old queen will swarm before the new queen emerges.
