  • Starting a fire with stinging nettle fibres gathered in the woods and wood ashes. From autumn to spring, dead stinging nettles have dry and "ready to use fibres", perfect for fire roll/rudiger roll friction fire-starting technic. It works best if you add some ashes, rust or charcoal for extra friction.

Oh wow! Stinging Nettle is something I am intending on attempting to fire roll this summer. (but with green living, dried a couple hours, and then worked into a fine fibrous mat)

Do you think old man's beard lichen would work as fibers?

Very cool video, i could not get it working with Stinging Nettle yet. I do not know why, but at the end my roll is always totally shredded. Can you give me a little tip how i can make it work? Happy Easter from Germany

Well, it could be a lot of things, but usually, if the fibres are getting to shredded it can be one of the following things:
      1) The quality of the fibres: In spring, the fibres can be already too decayed. Maybe try with green fibres gathered in summer or autumn and then dried for a day or two.
      2) Too much ash: Ash is important for extra friction, but if you add too much it can tear up your fibres.
      3) Technique: When your roll is ready don’t stop rolling it until you can smell the smoke. If you stop too many times to check for smoke then you won’t get the temperature high enough.
I hope it will help. Let us know about your progress.
