Thank you for explaining in a straight forward way why a N100 will not be enough to work as my living room media PC. All other reviews I have seen just mention that they work perfectly fine for streaming 4K video and then goes on testing games that I will never play, while I need something that is not on full load all the time.

Everything has it's own advantages and dis-advantages. I have been using Mele quieter 3q with M5105/8GB/256GB and I can say it was really capable for home/office use - extremely low energy consumption was a bonus - I have had 2x 4K screens connected via HDMI. I'm not playing any games... Maybe not any but only few. Games I'm playing are Kmahjongg, KPatience, Kmines, Naval Battle, Ksudoku and Aisleriot
I have been then using it also as PiHole, then Proxmox server and then HTPC for a while as well and was really capable. 1080p, no issues at all. A bit sluggish on initial loading in 4K but once loaded, it was smooth. I have to mention that I have been using Linux and not Windows (Windows experience is not that great on it). I still own that Mele PC and using it as a platform for my online learning. If I have to be honest, I could be perfectly fine if It have to be my main PC. Everything depends on what you need and expect. One of my friends used to be saying that one person will be happy with a Fiat Punto when the other person will need a tank....

The N95/N97/N100 class are perfect for a bog standard PC for browsing, running office applications at home, that kind of thing. They're also great as lightweight servers for pi-hole, Plex (very good encode/decode support built in), home automation, etc. They have at least a couple of niches in which they excel, especially for home use, because anything more is just overkill. They're even pretty good at emulation as long as you temper your expectations about their capabilities.

For server/virtualization hosts N100 is beast. I ripped out G3 out of it's chassis. Removed stock blower cooler. Put on high performance thermo pads. Added two 25x25mm pure copper heatsing and slow big usb fan under it. It is silent and won't throttle under full load. Then you can convert wifi slot to 2x SATA or NVME 1x and normal NVME slot for 6x SATA or 10Gbe NIC. And it is rock solid despite looking frankesteiny

The G3 is a lovely machine, when I bought it it was 99€ barebones.
Ofc back then the 5500u was a bit pricey, but its good to see an update now that prices have changed.
    Great coverage as always!

If you buy one of these mini PCs, I strongly suggest that you take it apart and put some fresh paste on on the cooler. That brought my temps down 40 degrees (C) on a brand new mini PC. I was previously getting temps in the 90s on the same PC brand new right out of the box. The factory paste didn't look bad and wasn't dried out but something obviously wasn't right.

I just bought a Beelink N100 16 GB Pro S. I have absolutely no complaints. It does what I want and more. I paid £220. Most of my use is data transfer and streaming (Ahem - torrenting - ahem), but also gaming. You know when they say "for such a little box its ok"? Well not this time. This little box rocks on its own terms! N100, 16GB, 500GB SSD... Stand alone its a pretty good gaming PC. AND can do all the business stuff (I'm a global douchebag IT guy). And Win 11 pre installed, thats a plus.

Today on Amazon there's only a $40 difference between the G3 and the W04 R5 5500. Considering the performance difference, the R5 (2x RAM and SSD) seems to be the obvious choice unless you're really constrained on power.

The Peladn would be a bad choice, because it's the best of nothing.
The GMKtec is very low power, super cheap, enough for simple tasks. Nobody buys that to run Steam.
The Peladn isn't very good at gaming, if you want to run Steam just save some more money and buy something more serious. It uses to much power for what it does.
I would however look for a GMKtec with 16GB

Yep, aren't some people going to be in for a shock when they suddenly realise that the consumer pays tariffs?

    • @DarthTinderalla-qm9zw
      @DarthTinderalla-qm9zw 28 днів тому +1

I'd rather have an extra $100 tariff if it means we actually have American manufacturing, and we already have several chip makers planning to open plants here. Besides I should save plenty from gas to pay double for all of the cheap garbage I buy. Also tariffs will be on the supplier price not the final retail price, so it'll probably be much less on most things than people expect.

    • @JamesSmith-sw3nk

@@DarthTinderalla-qm9zw The problem is, like most Trump supporters, You are proud to be ignorant and You have no idea about what you are talking about.
From Wiki: "Taiwan plays a crucial role in the global semiconductor industry, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) being the world’s largest independent semiconductor foundry. Here are key points about Taiwan’s CPU manufacturing:
Dominance: Taiwan produces over 60% of the world’s semiconductors and over 90% of the most advanced ones, with TSMC accounting for the majority of this output.
TSMC: As the world’s largest foundry, TSMC manufactures chips for major technology firms such as Apple, Qualcomm, and Nvidia. It has expanded its operations outside of Taiwan, opening new facilities in Japan and the United States, with plans for further expansion into Germany.
Apple’s 5nm ARM processors: TSMC is the manufacturer selected for production of Apple’s 5nm ARM processors, with plans to transition the entire Mac lineup to Arm-based processors.
Global dependence: The world is heavily reliant on Taiwan for semiconductors, with TSMC’s contract manufacturers accounting for over 60% of total global foundry revenue.
Economic significance: Semiconductors make up 15% of Taiwan’s GDP, with TSMC being a critical component of the country’s economy."
The retailer will pass 100% of the tariff to the consumer.

@@DarthTinderalla-qm9zw Not absolutely sure how you come to the conclusion that tariffs and low Gas prices are linked. The US is currently the worlds largest oil producer and yet Gas prices are still high? (P.S if you think they are high in the US look at Europe). It's not imports increasing the cost of your Gas, it's greedy producers who know you have no choice but to be scalped by them in the current economy.
As for your assertion that tariffs would be applied at the supplier price and not the retail price so would probably be lower than people expect. You know this how? It completely depends on how a tariff is applied and we don't have the details. It's quite possible (and already happens in practice) that it's applied as a form of sales tax or increased rate on an existing sales tax so yes, it absolutely can apply on the full retail price.
But just to be absolutely clear, I'm not necessarily anti Tariff. They have their place if dealing with a competing economy that is actively "dumping" products or commodities that your own can produce or if you want to encourage your own sectors of an economy to develop against an existing lower cost competitor.
What tariff aren't though is a Hammer when you need a screwdriver and they certainly DO cost the consumer.
That was my initial point; Trump lied when he said it would be other Countries not Americans paying the tariffs he is going to apply and people believed him. Yours is a different position to that I was arguing against. You seem to accept that tariffs will cost you but does everyone? I would say they bloody well should do and should have took the trouble to find out BEFORE the election.

different brands not a good comparison. GMKtec overprices theirs due to name recognition.
