Southeast Alaska poses a daunting challenge for local agriculture: The climate is tough, good farmland is scarce, and a lack of infrastructure makes it difficult for small growers to get their products to consumers. Today, Alaska imports 95% of its food-a crucial vulnerability as global supply chains grow ever more stretched. “Food security not only matters, but it's actually vital to building resilient communities,” says Kylie Wray. “It's actually a matter of our survival and our sustainability.”
Eli Wray has always loved growing things. But with only one seasonal farmers’ market in the Juneau area, farming wasn’t a viable full-time living. So he and Kylie decided it was up to them to build the kind of permanent farm-to-consumer hub Juneau needed to sustain local small agriculture.
The community has responded, and the success of Panhandle has allowed Eli and Kylie to build their dream of a farm of their own. Windfall is a bio-diverse, multi-aspect farm: seasonal organics and hydroponics for year-round greens alongside goats and chickens for dairy and egg share programs.
Together, the Wrays are always looking for the next way to build Juneau’s food systems. Whether it’s planting cucumbers, raising baby goats, or creating a vital marketplace for small farmers, Eli and Kylie Wray are finding new ways to grow.
