Wood Turning The Cool Vase
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 кві 2022
- I used a very beautiful piece of English Walnut to make this vase.
From the other pieces I have turned I expected it to be drier than it was.
I started by mounting it on a wood worm screw.
It was very wet but it all worked out in the end.
Getting it down to 1/4" walls helped and I did have to let it sit because of other things going on. I put a plastic bag on when I finished for the day.
I used Zinsser Seal Coat and Minwax Wipe On Poly for the finish.
I then used Acks Sanding Paste and Acks Polish Restoring paste for a very nice finish.

Letting the wood dictate the shape is so important. When done well like you did here I allows the piece to come alive.
Thank you very much Kevin. Having a shape in mind never hurts but like you said we must be willing to go with the grain of the wood when speaks so loudly.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That grain is amazing! When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it must be epoxy resin, because I couldn't imagine a piece of wood like that.
Thank you very much. It is pretty for sure. Highly unlikely you will see any epoxy resin bowls on my channel. I do like the looks but I have reasons that it is better not to do them.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
hello friends greetings healthy and successful always. thank you for sharing knowledge and always faithfully watching your latest things you are great fun people
Thank you very much and thanks for watching,
Gary
Oh, Gary! What a magnificent piece of wood. One of the great privileges of being a turner. Now about your toolwork - just as magnificent. For me, half of the enjoyment in your videos is careful attention to how you apply your tools. What a great job. As for the wet wood? Scared the stuffing out of me. All of us have so much more wet wood that the stuff that has seasoned (without cracking wide open). I will have to try (again) to imitate your success although it won't be on such a beautiful piece of wood. Thank you for all you have taught me.
Thank you very much Tom for your very kind comments. Happy you enjoyed this one and happy you enjoy my other videos. For some reason this Walnut does not mind being turned wet. At least the pieces I have done.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful vase, ready like English Walnut. Thanks for sharing Gary.
Thank you very much Tony. I think it is just as pretty as Black Walnut. Maybe because I do not have any Black Walnut LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Such a beautiful piece of wood Gary. Mother nature sure can give us a canvas worth the headache sometimes. Working on a piece of wet sassafras with live edge here in central Pa. My garage has been smelling like Root beer and I'm loving it. Thank you for all of your tips. If it weren't for you and Phil I wouldn't know how to do what I'm doing and it's been a real privilege to learn from the best. Happy turning my Friend 😊
Thank you very much Edward for you kind words. Sounds good to have a Root Beer smelling shop.
Years ago when I started my pattern making apprenticeship we used a lot of Sugar Pine for the patterns.
You would not believe how many people would come in the shop and think it was a bakery. Even when I went on a vacation and came back it was a very sweet and powerful smell. But then you would get used to it and not even notice.
Take care,
Gary
As always Gary your piece is Absolutely Beautiful. Love Walnut.
Thanks for sharing 👍.
Thanks so much Carl and thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary, beautiful English Walnut vase. The shape is really nice. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much Tanya. Happy you like it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Possibly one of the very best turnings I've ever seen...thank you...Lester
Thank you Lester I appreciate the comment.
Take care and see you on the next one.
Gary
That grain, wow! Beautiful. Age some wine in it.
Thank you Khan, sounds like a good idea but I probably would not let it age very long LOL.
Speaking of aging wine many years ago I was making some and found a misplaced bottle after 25 years. It was Blackberry and it was very good!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I always enjoy your videos and your work. I lost track of you on UA-cam for awhile so I am catching up on your videos. I work on my wood projects for a while in my air conditioned shop then come inside and watch your videos.. That way I stay out of the Texas heat. Haha. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Thank you Travis and welcome back. Happy you do watch my videos.
Yesterday we reached 99 degrees and for Oregon that is pretty warm. But I also run for the air condition house myself. Not the same as your Texas heat but I get it. Back in 1967 I was at Ft. Polk Louisiana for infantry training and it was a scorcher.
Today will be a high of 71 they say which is just fine for me.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Walnut never disappoints. what beautiful wood
You are right Dale and thanks for watching.
Gary
A beautiful piece of work. Soon I'll will be trying eucalyptus root I salvaged from a home I had in Florida. This will be my second time using a lathe. I lost my woodshop from a fire several years ago. I have been watching several wood turners to build my skills as well as reading books on wood turning. I like your style of turning. I'll be watching more of your videos. Happy turning and be safe.
Thank you John and sorry about woodshop. Hope you were able to build something back up. I am sure you will love using a wood lathe.
Happy you enjoy my channel and best of luck with the Eucalyptus root. Sounds interesting.
Take care,
Gary
I agree that that piece of walnut is just amazing. You have a gifted eye for design and real skill for bringing out the beauty in a piece of wood. Thanks so very much for sharing with us.
Thank you very much Doug. Your comments are much appreciated.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a beautiful Vase. I love the grains and colors. And the shape is perfect for the wood. Thank you for your thorough explanations on how you are seeing and producing your pieces as you go along making each piece.
Thank you John. Happy you enjoyed the video and how I make them
Take care,
Gary
Excellent work again ,reminded me of Jupiter with that stunning grain.
Thank you Grace. Yes someone else pointed that out as well. Might have to call it the Jupiter Vase.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Outstanding figure and color. Great shape. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.
Thanks so much Glen and thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful piece of English walnut & finishing is awesome.
Thank you my friend!
Take care,
Gary
what a great piece. That is gorgeous well done exposing mother nature.
Thank you Garry, this piece was mother nature at her best.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi, Gary. Another fine piece from your hands. I've always been a matte finish enthusiast, but you and Phil may have me convinced enough to try the shellac finish one of these days. It really does show off highly figured wood. Glad to see that you were sporting a Hoonah, Alaska t-shirt for the beginning of the video. Hoonah is about the same population, and geographically in the same neighborhood, as my town on Prince of Wales Island. Thanks for a great video!
Take care,
--Paul
Thank you Paul, I think you will love shellac and you do not have to make it shiny. Knock the shine back with scotch birite or steel wool.
I love that Hoonah shirt. Reminds me of the mile long zip line we took. Takes 60 seconds to get to the bottom and you are sitting right out in the open. It was warm when I had it on but cooled off fast.
We just had one heck of a snow storm. Only lasted 20 minutes or so but it was a surprise.
Take care,
Gary
Truly a beautiful piece of English Walnut. Your design intensified the beauty of the wood. I have several pieces of English Walnut in my pile of blanks but the grain comes no where close to the piece you turned. Thank you for your inspiration.
Thank you very much. A few years ago I got a number of pieces of English Walnut and it was nothing like this.
It came from an active walnut orchard and the trees were not as big as this one which came out of our friends yard.
Not sure if that made a difference or not.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Mr. Gary you have turned an absolutely gorgeous bowl and the grain is stunning, take care and stay safe and God bless.
Thank you Donald! Very happy you liked it.
You have a wonderful Easter and God Bless you as well.
Gary
As always beautiful work Brother. Gary that is beautiful vase. I love English walnut Colors 👍🏽 thank you for sharing and stay safe my friend.
Thank you very much Habeeb. I really enjoyed turning this piece of wood. Turned like a dream and the grain is just amazing.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Very nice piece Gary. I really like the English walnut. Love your videos, keep smiling and keep turning!!
Thanks so much Gary. I do love the English Walnut as well. Happy you enjoy my videos and I have lots in the planning.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice vase Garry. The tenon removal was pretty exciting. Y you our finish looks great. Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you Doug. I probably would not have removed it this way if I did not have all the support on the inside. But it sure was a surprise.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful!! With it being wet I was hoping it wouldn’t crack because it looked like it had a line in it that could have formed one. That English walnut is a beautiful grained wood. Happy Easter, He is risen.
Thank you Rick. Those lines were some kind of staining in the growth rings. Seems fairly stable and I have turned a lot from this batch that was wet and it has done fine. I think this will as well.
Happy Easter,
Gary
Great finishing, Gary, I love its color and grain, 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Gao! And thanks for watching.
Gary
A Beautiful creation 👍👍👍. Thank you for sharing. Be safe
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.

It's hard to go wrong with walnut. Looks great!!!
Thank you Dave! You are right about Walnut. I think it is almost everyone's favorite.
Take care,
Gary
Your right Gary the grain is spectacular and you couldn't give it a better shape stay safe friend👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much radar! It was a lot of fun to turn and happy you liked it.
Take care my friend,
Gary
You were correct about the beauty of the grain, Gary!. Well done!. I am getting close to finishing the second one of the segmented decanters. This one is maple and purpleheart offset by a full segment.
Thank you Clayton. Your decanter sounds very interesting. I was actually thinking of making this shape with segments. I already have it drawn up so who knows maybe it will be on the list soon.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful work Gary, as I've mentioned before, English Walnut is such a rich wood. Take care, John
Thank you John and yes it sure is a beautiful wood.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Very nicely done Gary, beautiful English walnut and great shape!
Thanks so much and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
I see your Hoona Alaska shirt. I have a friend who stays on his boat there every summer for years.
That was a great trip we did in May of 2013. We did a cruise for our 41st anniversary.
That 1 mile long zip line ride was a blast.
Thanks for watching Steve,
Gary
Absolutely gorgeous! I miss my shop! I moved just over a year ago into a small rental with no shop or garage. I miss the space for sure!
Thank you very much. I could see how that would be hard. Hope you are able to find a way to have a work area.
Gary
This is amazing the dark wood and the grain is beautiful 😊🇬🇧❤️
Thank you Jane. This is one of my favorite pieces of wood.

Gary
What a natural beauty you’ve brought out. Love it!
Thank you very much Philomena and thanks for watching.
Gary
That came out really awesome, the grain is wonderful. Thank you for sharing your video.
Thank you very much Mark. There is some very nice grain for sure. I have another piece in the lathe and hoping it has really nice grain as well.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Another great video. Thanks, again, for the descriptions, as you go. Very helpful.
That walnut piece turned out awesome!
Thanks so much K Ma, very happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
What a coincidence that you are also making a Vase from Walnut. Same orientation as mine, only I used two pieces of about four inches thick. And I really think my Walnut is the same species; English Walnut. Great work Gary! 😎
Thank you Leo and I watched your first part. Should be a very cool looking vase.
I had some English Walnut that came from a walnut orchard that was taken down because walnuts were not selling very well. I could have gotten dump trucks full of it. I think the fact the trees were not as old as the one that this wood came from they did not have as much color to them. Much lighter color but still pretty.
This one was from our friends tree that was dying and had to come down. I did get all of the wood from it.
You will be seeing some segment work from it as well. That is the wood I showed in my recent drying box video.
I still have more strips to process as well.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice, Gary! Beautiful wood turning.
I don’t know why I have not seen this video before since I try to comment on those you put out for the past several months. Glad I found this one!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!👍👍👍👍
Thank you John. This was a very fun one to do and had some wonderful grain.
Thanks for catching up on the ones you missed.
Gary
Wow Gary that is some beautiful English Walnut definitely one of my favorite pieces you’ve made so far take care and God bless my friend
Thank you Mike, I am happy you liked it. I am very happy with it and that others like it as well.
God Bless and have a wonderful Easter my friend,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 you’re very welcome and thank you I hope you have a wonderful Easter as well
What a beautiful shape you came up with, Gary! I know you love the grain and yeah, it's great, but for me, your design is the best part of this piece. The finish is, as always, spectacular. Great job, my friend, keep'em coming!
Phil
Well thank you Phil! While I was making the shape I just was not sure how it would go over. I do like it a lot and really happy that others like it as well. This piece deserved a special finish and it did work out nicely. It was so much fun to turn as well. Not spending hours of gluing for 5 minutes of turning LOL. I should laugh...just wait till next week. haha
See you on your next one buddy!
Take care,
Gary
A nice comment from Phil. He’s one of of my two favorite wood turners. Gary, you’re the other.
Gary, that is one gorgeous piece. The only walnut that I have turned is black walnut and it also has gorgeous grain. Thanks for sharing your work.
Thank you very much Jack. I was lucky to get this English Walnut. It was our friends tree and it had to be taken down as it was dying from a worm infection. I have not turned any Black Walnut and keep watching for some. But those trees very seldom get cut down around here.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Absolutely Stunning piece I wish I could find some chunks of Walnut like that
Thank you Colin, this came from a tree our friends had to have taken down. It was dying from a bug infection. A lot of it has worm holes in it.
A few years ago I could have gotten all of this stuff I could ever want. A walnut orchard was taken down because the walnuts were not selling very well and they planted something else. It was not as pretty as this wood. This tree was much older is why I think the wood is so nice.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice sir, love the walnut. Stunning.🌿 👍👍👍
Thank you very much Rob. I was really lucky to get a lot of this Walnut. It is such a nice wood to turn.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really a beautifull piece of walnut Gary
Thank you very much Rob and thanks for watching.
Gary
Visionary. To see what story the wood will tell. Love it.
Thank you Merry. While a tree is growing it is creating a story of its own in the grain. I am happy I was able to help this piece with it's story.
thanks for watching,
Gary
The grain is incredible. I have always like walnut. The shape you turned shows off the grain. Thanks for showing this beautiful turning.
Thank you very much. Happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
What a beatiful piece of wood and the grain really pops. I am so pleased that you mentioned the set screw on the chuck when turning in reverse. I did not know awhile back and you told me about the screw which I drilled and tapped. Things happen real fast when you don't have the set screw and the results may not be good. Thanks
Thank you Paul. I am glad you were able to get a set screw in yours. If you were to get a catch while turning in reverse without a set screw you might have to chase the chuck across the shop.
Years ago I had a lathe before we had all the 4 jaw chucks so used a face plate. No set screws in it. I wired the motor so I could run it both ways. I only did that for sanding. It was a capacitor motor and it would only change direction when it was almost stopped. Well that is enough to unscrew the faceplate.
the modern 3 phase motors and VFD will reverse on the fly.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful work as always. I found your videos a couple months ago. My dad and I have really been enjoying watching them. Thank you for sharing your amazing woodworking skills and experience with us. I really appreciate it. Keep up the great work and great videos.

Very beautiful Gary, I think english walnut is one of my favorites . Keep the beautiful work!
Thank you Mike! I was very lucky to get the whole tree that this piece came from. We have Black Walnut around here but I have not came across any. Although I have a possibility of getting some.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great teaching video for me... Thanks for making that beautiful piece!!!!
Thank you very much Randy. It was a great teaching for me as well. I have not made a shape like the before.
I now see a second shape based on this one.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Aplausos: esa madera de nogal es maravillosa, la forma que le diste es perfecta para destacar su grano y su color y el acabado quedó espectacular.
Gracias por compartir este video!

One absolutely gorgeous vase/urn. About the best thing I've seen you do.

Thank you very much Allen Some of the best is what you find laying around. The Plum I just did is that way.

It's a lovely shape. Got just the chunk of wood to do something similar 👍
Thank you Gary! I have a few other shapes I would like to do with English Walnut as well.
Best of luck with the chuck of wood you have.

very pretty Gary! Ive seen lots of black walnut turned, but this is the very first english walnut. absolutely gorgeous! the shape is just perfect! well done!👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Dave, this English Walnut came from our friends yard. Had to come down because it was dying. It was much older than some English Walnut I got from a walnut orchard. The older tree has much nicer grain and color.
thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 If you have a piece with prettier grain and color, please do a video of it! If you have already, its one I havent seen, and will have to search back and watch it for sure!
@@daveb.misc.2589I will be turning more and sometimes we have no idea what the grain will be like. I do have a few pieces that I think are really going to have nice grain and will be turning then in the near future.

Great piece and thanks for the demonstration. That was amazing.
Thank you Douglas. I was sure fun to make. I showed to to my friends on a google meets call this evening. It came out of their yard nearby by us. But they have moved to another state.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
That is a wonderful, graceful shape. The beautiful grain makes this an outstanding piece. I love that finish; it's the same technique and products I use. I've not tried hollowing yet but will attempt it soon after I get the proper tools.
Thank you very much Paul. Happy you liked it and best of luck when you do get some hollowing tools.
Thanks for watching,

Excellent grain and color. A very beautiful piece. I’m just worried that it will change shape due to the moisture that’s still in it. Thanks again.
Thank you Michael. In a lot of case you can expect a wet piece to warp. I have turned a number of pieces from this tree and all were turned green. None have had any issues. I think English Walnut is pretty forgiving when turned wet.
Apple on the other hand will really warp when turned green and thin. But I like that about Apple.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you mr Gary it's wonderful job 👍 💯 thumbs-up. Cheers

Well done Gary 👏. Amazing grain and finish. Walnut seems to be an excellent wood to turn. As rare as hens teeth here 😆.
Happy Easter. Joseph
Thank you Joseph. Yes Walnut is not only a beautiful wood it turns so nicely. I was lucky to get this when our friends had to have the tree cut down as it was dying.
Happy Easter,
Gary
Hi 👋 👍, Great looking piece of walnut lovely job. You must be proud the way it turned out.
I’ve been watching your territorials for the past 3 years , and you’ve always done amazing piece of work.
I think I sent you some comments on another device a year or so ago when you replied.
I have an old Watkin RS8, has been given me some problems I need a thread adapter from 1-3/8 x 6 TPI to metric size 33 x 3.5, , As this seems to be a common size for a lot of the lathes chucks nowadays, as I am now retired living in France I find it difficult to find people that can make one offs of bits and pieces like a thread adapter, that’s enough for me ramping on, keep up the great work look forward to your next territorial stay safe and as we say facemask had Head shield on. Phil from the moulin France.
Hi Phil and yes I am very happy with how it turned out.
I do remember you talking about the Wadkin lathe. Seems as though it must be a pattern makers lathe. We had one at the pattern shop I retired from.
You should be able to find and adapter. Check this site out.

What a choice from the wood pile not that i'm bias grand shape you ended up with, excellent finish, lovely colour walnut oh yes and on the plus side it's English ahahahaha. All the best from us both from Lincolnshire UK.
Thank you very much Gary. I understand you English Walnut looks much the same.
I do know that at least in the walnut orchards they graft the English Walnut to Black Walnut roots because they do a lot better around here.
This tree was in our friends yard and was not grafted. And the wood is much prettier than the stuff I got from a walnut orchard.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Absolutely beautiful .great size n shape too.great job.
Thanks so much. I have found that this is a good size for a lot of reasons. One being if they are too large they can look out of place depending on where you put them. The other is I am running out of places to put them.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
