- Slydogmania presents recently-unearthed footage of John Rowles, the greatest single talent ever to emerge from Aotearoa (New Zealand), seen here performing two songs for European TV audiences as a 21-year-old in 1969, hot on the heels of global success the previous year with If I Only Had Time.
One of the Greatest singers ever produced in my time...I can never tire of his talent...
Under estimated singer, even good as Tom Jones, tony Christy & Engelbert Humperdinck !!
He is a mix of them, and looks like Elvis.
That's because he's a Kiwi.New Zealand is an underrated country.
I think the reason ge never got as big as Tom or Engelbert was because he didn't enough hits like this one. Songs that had more of a world wide appeal.. songs like Delilah, Love is All, The last Waltz. Instead ge songs where he sang in Hawaiian and NZ languages. Thats only going to appeal to a narrower spectrum of listeners. And I can say that because I was in show business for 20 years as a professional singer, and I only just recently discovered John. So how was that possible?
Great songs. Great voice. One Day was/is his favourite song too.

.....I am a 63yr old 2 spirited man and today April 11th, 2024 iz the very first time my ears have been blessed to hear such wonder. New Zealand how lucky you are to have such treasure. A Canadian just fell in love with John Rowles.❤😍🤩

In Wairoa Hawkes Bay 1982,I saw his brother sing.Not as good but not bad either, Tania not so much.Did you know that he was the youngest man to headline Las Vagas at 23 ?.In 1992 when I was in Hawaii he was headlining at a nightclub there but I didn't get to see him.
What a top singer! Ive made the mistake of overlooking him for years - so glad to have finally located his remarkably fine voice......I recently discovered family in New Zealand and
listening to him makes me feel closer to them.....

A super talent who wasted his time and youth in Hawaii during the very early years of his career . John should have remained in England where he was topping the charts . He was better than Tom Jones and Humperdinck put together . As a result he seemed to disappear almost as quickly as he rose .
What a real real pity .
Correct Andrew , however this was not Johns Fault .Poor Mgmt and bad decisions made back then and the fact the John was only 19/20 at the time and stuck in a very bad contract and was basically owned for a long period . He had to buy himself out of that existence . It almost ended his career .

I was not aware of all his circumstances, with one exception, I knew how young he was .In an industry that is difficult to navigate at the best of times , being as tender aged as John was, also probably made him very vulnerable . It really is a crying shame he didn't have better people around him then . Anyway I hope John is happy and well . I still listen to that God given voice of his to this day . He is fantastic, such an amazing powerful and tuneful voice. John was singing around the same time as Tom Jones was and John has a very similar voice and style as Tom. You just don't hear voices like this much if at all anymore.
An amazing voice - so haunting and powerful - better than Elvis really! (he deserved to have a long list of hits - HUSH, NOT A WORD TO MARY and IF I ONLY HAD TIME aren't enough, but boy, what great songs they are!)

Perfect Performance! This was the footage that was shown on the B&W TVB screen again and again in 1969, including the snapshot when John raised his hand to touch his own face. Thanks for sharing this which is really a precious piece.

Yes he did. When Elvis was in Hawaii for the special in 1973, him and his guys came through the kitchen of the hotel (to avoid a scene) and came and watched John perform. Elvis was a fan of John Rowles, right from when John performed in Vegas in 1968 as a 21yo, and Elvis invited John up to his hotel suite afterwards. Elvis and his backing singers sang gospel songs all night, John stood at the bar talking with Tom Jones, and didn't leave the suite until 11am the next morning. Elvis also invited John to Graceland

Thank you so much for sharing that story with me, I really appreciate it very much, you really cheered up my day, knowing that Elvis acknowledged John Rowles incredible voice, I wonder if there are any old videos or past interviews with John Rowles, speaking about meeting the King. Wow absolutely amazing to hear this.
