HOW I created my wildlife pond in just three days

  • Not really a how to, more of a how I did....
    I wanted to attract more wildlife to the garden, and so after some research, I selected a number of native aquatic plants and using an old butler sink set about creating my wildlife pond.

    Gorgeous setup! 😁I was overthinking a barrel pond I wanted to put together, so this was a much needed inspiring reminder that you only need what you have and a little bit more to make something very pretty! 🥰🌱🐸🐦🦋

      Heyyyy there, i also got into gardening in 2021 when i moved into my rental that had a yard and it has been sooo cathartic for me. It’s like a therapy session at times, just being out there in the sun and wind, using my hands and putting all my thoughts and energies into figuring out what they need and where to put things. It’s a great distraction. I’ve also been obsessing over making a small pond and would love to see what you do if you make something 😌

    A butler sink pond is lovely and so good for garden wildlife. I made one a couple of years ago using the large rubber plug and silicone sealant just like yours - but sadly it started leaking in the winter, just a little at first but recently a lot. We have taken everything out today and moved it all to buckets. We found that the rubber plug has degraded and failed in the middle. We are going to use a fast setting cement to create a more permanent seal on the plug. I hope yours has faired better.

    • @annieskitchengarden818
      @annieskitchengarden818  Рік тому +4

      Ho Matk,
      What a shame that happened. I used a universal silicone plug. It has remained good since Sumner 2021. I recently cleaned the pond out to move it, and the plug is as good as new.
      I highly recommend them

    This is great! We have an Ikea 'farmhouse' sink we scored, hoping to have used it in a kitchen remodel, but it wasn't to be. Rather than part w/the sink, it's now sitting in our backyard. I need to double check if it's cracked and if so, seal it up and plug the drain. If that holds water, I'm off to the races! Thank you for this inspiration! I love your garden.

      @annieskitchengarden818  11 днів тому +1

      Hi Katelyn,
      Welcome to my little garden!
      I have been encouraging the local birds for many years now. I think the most important thing to remember if you do start feeding them...is to be consistent, as they do come to rely on the offerings. So I make sure I top up all my feeders every morning without fail. In fact, my feathered friends all line up on my fence each morning, specifically waiting for me to put out their breakfast!!
      You have just given me food for thought, though!
      They do feature in my videos from time to time, but I may just do a special edition purely dedicated to the birds.
      So, thank you for the inspiration.🙏

      Morning, it has settled nicely. I have a lot of larve and I introduced an army of daphnia. The plants are doing well, but I do have an issue with blanket weed, which I am removing almost every day. I have yet to have any exciting visitors as yet, but the birds seem to love it. I will do an update in my next video.

    I'm hoping to create a sink pond this year, Annie - wondered how yours is doing now?

    • @annieskitchengarden818
      @annieskitchengarden818  Рік тому +2

      Morning Lindsey,
      Mine is rather dormant at the moment. I had to empty it during the winter to move it. I'm waiting for better weather to replant it as one of the original plants I introduced last year had blanket weed. I thought I had been vigilant, but the problem got so bad I had to cut my losses. I would advise anyone introducing new plants to pick them over with a fine tooth comb before introducing an unwanted problem. But, experience teaches you. Besides that, it was a lovely addition to the garden. The birds loved it and I was surprised at the variety of bugs and other critters that visited it too!

    Really helpful video. Just doing one in a Belfast sink myself.
    My question is, did you attract much wildlife and would you have done anything differently if you’d done it again. I’ve dug a hole for the sink and it will be difficult to get it back out so I feel like I only have one crack lol.

    • @annieskitchengarden818

      Apologies Tom as I have only just seen this.
      The pond is doing great, with lots of little creatures and snails...also the birds love it too. However, it is sitting proud of the ground and so I have no amphibians. The one piece of advice I am offering to everyone is before you introduce any plants, check for the minute strands of blanket weed. Hold the plants up to the light to spot the very fine hairs and remove them, then check again and again. Hornwort was the culprit in my case as it is really hard to spot all of the 'hairs' I clearly didn't pay enough attention to this and now have a real problem with the stuff. I regularly remove quite a bit, but can never seem get rid of it.
      Otherwise, enjoy....😊🐸🦎🐚🪴

      Hi Nicola, the pond seems to have survived the winter. I have various snails and other little critters and the birds love it too. The plants have been dormant throughout the winter, but are gradually coming back to life now. I have 3 or 4 water lily leaves starting to unfurl and the water is fairly clear. I think that will improve once all the plants have revived. 😊
