@@wc1994YES! Thank you for adding that, ya beat me to it. I always though that the tuned down heavy sound lays the perfect foundation for Ozzy’s sharpened high end vocals to soar over the top of the mix.
Iommi’s injury really ended up shaping the Sabbath sound, in tuning down it also gave him the ability to more easily bend the strings up into higher register, as well as the prosthetic finger tip he had which worked well with the faster action of the Gibson SG.

    • @woogie88888

For us metal heads, the unholy trinity helped us survive and thrive in the 70s. My main squeeze was Zep, but if I wanted my ass kicked, balls punched, and face melted, Sabbath was the answer. All three of those bands (Sabbath, Deep Purple, Zep) had some of the best musicians to ever walk the rockin' earth. Ward is one bad mother, and Iommi always found a way to push that heavy distortion down your throat and out the backside. 🤘🤘

THE MIGHTY SABBATH...I think Tony chopping off the ends of his fingers on his last day of work at that Type Writer factory was a defining moment. He eventually melted down Dishwashing Liquid bottle caps and made thimbles allowing him to "sorta" play, but it was still painful. So then he moved to the lightest gauge strings he could find and TUNED as far down as he could, creating the Sabbath sound.

  • @bobschenkel7921
    @bobschenkel7921 Рік тому +28

Tony Iommi did have a way of tuning his guitar in a lower tone than almost everyone else. Also, if you look at his left hand when he is playing you will see little rubber caps in his fingers, the result of an accident on his last day at work in a metal shop, before he quit and went on the road with Sabbath. He was this close to not having a musical career at all. NO doubt what they are singing about here, that'd be ganja. Praise Jah.

You guys are the best. Love it when you're enjoying yourselves. This is the 1st track on the 1st album I ever bought, not sure it was appropriate for my 11 year old self, always a sentimental favorite. Maybe the greatest sludgiest sound ever. Wonder if this is when Tony started detuning down to D or Csharp, I don't know. Tony was the musical leader, the main composer, so we should all thank him often for this stuff. Also like the end of the song, when Ozzie's just improvising, makes me wonder if this is how he starts on songs. I heard he just sang sounds and nonsense at first on songs (Sabbath time at least), trying to find a vocal melody. He had a gift for melody, even though Geezer wrote almost all the words and Tony was the musical leader. Bill just being Bill on this tune, impeccable change from free solo part back to main riff.

I bought this album in 1971 when I was in Army basic training at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. There was a small base library with record players and a glass enclosed listening room, about 2 blocks away. Training ended on Saturday at noon, so I'd take this album over there and listen to it twice, rocking out with headphones on. The old lady who ran the library must have thought I was nuts or possessed, judging by the looks she gave me, but I didn't care. It was almost like an orgasmic release. This music helped me get through the intensity of my Viet Nam era training, and I still listen to it to this day, when the mood strikes me. I find it particularly enjoyable when it's stormy, with thunder and lightning..

This was my first metal album i ever owned. My buddy from Germany gave it to me for my birthday back in 1984 or 85. He was a foreign exchange student at my high school. We still talk all the time, and he has recently visited me here in Arizona. This album changed my musical horizons.

Had chance to see them live and it was absolutely amazing. Was the loudest concert i've ever been to and I've enjoyed many! Got to shake Bill Wards hand backstage while he was tuning his drums before the show. He was a true gentleman, incredibly kind. 😊

This is why they are the Kings of Heavy Metal.
This blew everyone away in 1970.
STILL today is heavy as hell and it got the groove you crave.
    Timeless stuff.

You guys should check out Paranoid live from 1985 live aid. It’s sorta a Sabbath reunion. It’s a great video to see them gettin’ at it!

I was a sophomore in high school! I liked the heavy too! Zeppelin, Sabbath, Floyd, Tull. We smoked and listened to music. Just hung out,in who’s ever parents basement that weren’t home. It’s all head music, as we used to say! Just close your eyes and ride !

Producer-" So, who takes a solo?" , Band-"Yes!" The album has a crushing inevitability to it. The sounds are similar but the songs twist and swirl, the vocals wail over what should be a cacophony but in fact is exactly what Zeppelin said they wanted to achieve...Tight but Loose. Easily the equals of any band of the 70's. Great choice.

When his finger tip was cut off he used a plastic bottle cap , melted it to fit over his finger, and that's why he got such a unique guitar sound

Only Sabbath can play that hard dirty gritty rock with a "I love you" being sung and some how being appropriate.

After a number of months burning out on Led zeppelin two songs on a 8 track tape and player. At 15 years old I was over at a friend’s house, his parents were out somewhere and I told him about how great Zeppelin 2 is and he agreed and said I know of a group that is just as good as them and maybe better. I told him it’s impossible and he put that album on, and really cranked it up. After a few glasses of his dad’s wine I had to agree, we heard that album over and over. At age 16 I had roundish speaker cracks in my plaster walls from playing these songs very loud. Great music, great reactions guys always love hearing what you think about really any type of music.

My favorite group in my favorite album for the band. You’re exactly right, you’re never sure what you’re gonna get. Go listen to their first greatest hits album which just touches down as they transition from the Johnston to the McDonald era. And always in the background is Patrick Simmons as the third vector….and Tiran Porter’s bass line the rock on which church of doobies is built. Best band ever
