Leopard surrounded by a lion pride

  • Filmed by spotlight safaris, this is what they said about what happened in the sighting:
A lioness originally chased the leopard under a large bush then called in others to help flush it out. Finally, the male lion came in for the kill and there was a huge ruckus under the bush which ended with the lions chasing each other across the plains and the leopard walking out.
The lions then cornered the leopard again which is where this clip picks up. A leopard's best line of defense is to lie on its back with its claws extended and teeth bared - which is what is happening here.
The leopard is still very much alive at the end of this clip but faking it in hopes that the lions will lose interest - which most of them did. However, not all of them.....

It's difficult to know exactly what is going on, but here's my take on it.
    1. There is one very dominant Matriarch lioness, who is the one doing most of the attacking vs the male. She and the other lioness with a tail are allies in this, probably the other one is a sister or daughter. The Ally lioness also attacks the lion if you note along with the Matriarch.
    2. The no-tail lioness seems to be of lesser social standing, perhaps older and weaker. She is certainly put in her place at least once by the Matriarch. However, if you note, she also manages to put a nip on the Aggressive Male's back at one point. She just doesn't have the stomach to follow through, probably because she's right at the bottom of the pecking order.
    3. The more Passive Male in the background mostly stays out of this, apart from at one point running in to attack the back of one of the tailed lionesses when they are attacking his brother. He soon realises his mistake though when both tailed lionesses turn on him and he RUNS from them and stays in the background after that. He's clearly not the bravest of lions.
    4. Aggressive Male is behaving how a male "should", i.e. attacking a rival predator in the vicinity and trying to kill it. He is however confused by the behaviour of the tailed Lionesses. The leopard is also a more unexpectedly difficult target as it manages to get several razor-sharp swipes on his nose before the lionesses rush in to attack him.
    Questions: -
    1. Why does the leopard not run? I don't think it is, as some have speculated, that it is paralyzed after its spine has been broken. I can clearly see its back legs moving at times during the attack, though of course it is mostly swiping out with front paws - its weapons. Lions, especially the females, are the fastest of all big cats over short distances (discounting cheetahs). If the leopard runs (a) it becomes a target to chase and (b) it's not fast enough to escape the lionesses should they choose to attack, as there are no trees close enough for the leopard to escape to. The leopard's actions are therefore very logical. It's not being submissive either; lying on its back is a way to protect its back, and present any attacks with a wall of four razor-tipped paws and teeth behind that. Tigers also often fight in this way, as do lionesses. It knows male lions generally rush in head-first to bite, relying on their manes to protect their necks, but that still leaves their eyes and nose vulnerable to counter-attack. You'll note the lion was having more difficulty attacking the leopard than might be expected, even before the lionesses got involved. Yes, he could kill the leopard if it had been just the two of them, but he's being very careful, since being blinded by the leopard would not be a price worth paying. You'll note even when he's approaching to attack the leopard, he takes his time and is fairly careful, respectful of the damage the leopard can cause and it *did* hurt him at one point.
    2. Why and how does the Matriarch and her Ally defend the leopard against the lion? Well, one thing I will say is that a Matriarch may be more dominant in the pride than we realise. Yes, she "submits" one-on-one to a male lion, but if she has the alliance of several other lionesses, she can even take it to the males if needed as Passive Male finds out to his cost. The lionesses are more stable in the pride, as they see male lions come and get chased out after a few years. Ultimately if it comes down to a fight between the male and the lionesses, the male doesn't *want* to kill the lioness since he wants to mate with her, so he's at a severe disadvantage, since the lioness will be attacking all the more fiercely for being lesser in strength than he and needing to compensate. But that only explains _how_ the lionesses can stand up to the male lion, not _why_ they did it. We don't know what's going on here: perhaps the lionesses were already irritated with the Aggressive Male for some reason, perhaps the Matriarch felt somehow motherly towards the leopard in that "unfair" situation it was put into. Who knows? Clearly though if you watch the Matriarch while the Aggressive Male was carefully approaching the leopard before attacking, she's growling at him and baring her teeth, trying to warn him away from the attack, and then she attacks once he ignores that warning. I get the sense that her action is premeditated and thought out, not just a reflex (whereas arguably, her swatting down the Tail-less lioness at one point was probably just adrenaline-driven fury - Tail-less just got too close at the wrong time)

I doubt the leopard was paralyzed but it could have been injured enough to know running away wasn't a option.
I've seen another video of this same exact scenario but no male lions were present. The females either sat nearby or walked closely to the leopard without attacking. The leopard stayed in a submissive (or counterattack) position. When the females looked away, the leopard shot off like a rocket and there was no chase.

@von maybe I should've emphasized on the semantics. This video displays a lioness TAKING ON, meaning attacking, but not implying that she could win that fight.
Au contraire, my friend, what I'm taking about, is a lioness TAKING DOWN, meaning killing a male lion.
Attacking is instinctive. In the human realm, we call it SELF-DEFENSE or instinct of CONSERVATION; in other words, do what you gotta do to survive, no matter what the odds are.

In my view, which might slightly explain this peculiar behaviour, is that since the leopard demonstrated submission and vulnerability to the lionesses in a cat-lion style manner, they thought they owned the leopard as their own cub . Confusions do take place in the animal kingdom. Rare but they do. I once saw a lioness adopting a baby impala for hours. But then little did I know that she'd recently lost her own cubs, which may have explaind that triggered maternal instict to protect the baby of another species.

    • @klnj9714

They know it's not their baby, but the instincts that make enable them to protect their babies and bond with each other were triggered. Just as a human can have her maternal instincts triggered for a grown person or animal of another species... we evolved it so that we could cooperate and raise young, but once the instinct is there it can be triggered by other things that it did not evolve for. I a female primate rescued a a dog once. Body language is a powerful thing. Doesn't necessarily take experts to spot and access certain things. Clearly the surrounding Lionesses were more interested in checking out the Leopard. Had the Black Mane Dominant Male not been there they would've probably left it alone or at very worse chased it once it got a chance to run. The Male lion's instinct is to destroy anything not apart of his pride that could represent a threat hence why it unmercifully mauled the Leopard. The Lionesses appeared triggered by his aggression to a submissive entity resembling themselves (Leopards essentially look like Lionesses) hence why they attacked him as if defending one of their own youth. The stature of the Leopard and its defensive mechanics triggered the motherly instincts of the Lionesses against Males who intend to kill.
The females are essentially saying " you're small, you look like us, hmm "
Males is like " To hell with this, it isn't one of us it has to die " lmao. Females are like " hey hey wait a minute ". The King's decree is final.

That is a bold brave leopard for sure but if these lions were intended and determined to kill it, the leopard would be dead. Usually, in a pride of male and female lions, I have noticed that sometimes the lionesses hesitate to further engage a cornered leopard, but the male lions generally don't think too much. This one male just straight savages and yields gruesome attacks on the leopard. The males are absolutely better, more dangerous and more aggressive fighters than lionesses.
