5 Baby Seals Rescued from Rubbish

  • Rescue runs like this one are immensely stressful. Seals follow their herd instinct, they stick to the first seal that starts running away, even if they cannot see or smell the perceived predators themselves. It is impossible for the rescuers to stay unnoticed and sneak past hundreds of seals to get to the entangled individual. As soon as they are detected by the first one, the mass stampede begins as the animals fear for their lives and try to escape. To save one seal, hundreds of others have to be scared and chased away from the place they consider safe.
It would have been easier and more humane to keep the ocean clean and take the rubbish home!

The terrain adds to the degree of difficulty, but you still managed to save multiple seals. Only one uninjured seal out of 5 rescues is not good odds for them, though. Thanks, team!🦭♻️

I don’t know how you guys can spot these seals in trouble and how you can run through the herd of seals and slippery rocks. I’m sure you must get injured running full speed. Men who go to the gym to work out should spend a week with you guys and see how much strength it takes to hold down these seals while the entanglement is removed and I’m sure it causes the seals pain but you guys have the strength to hold them and talk to them to try to comfort them. I can not praise you enough for the work you do. I know you feel the pain almost as much as the seals you rescue and you don’t give up until the seal is free.

When we cruise, we’re not allowed to use plastic straws, yet all of this stuff doesn’t matter. Fishermen should be required to identify their nets in some way so that we’d know who is responsible for this. Thank you for what you do!

    Hi all!
Such different threats to the life of seals. An ordinary plastic bag - and it caused such damage... You can watch these guys work endlessly: harmoniously, clearly, without any command shouts (unless you need to show where the confused seal is going), and most importantly - quickly and without unnecessary pain for the one being saved. Thank you guys! (Of course, it would be better if the oceans were clean, but alas.. now you save whoever you can)

Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year.
We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

For many years , I have managed to reduce the use of plastic to bare minimum. Linen bags have replaced plastic bags. I am a vegan, & don't eat fish either. I don't see any animal or bird as food. We are a small group dedicated to this principle. We should do everything possible, that is within our control.not only seals but every life form needs conservation. In India we have gone to places , visited by migratory birds. These. Birds have been affected by falling water levels in catchment areas, young birds are affected by marine pollution etc. Marine park is being developed with focus on vermiculture, recycling, separate processing of plastic waste etc.

They now have a chance. We cannot guarantee they will survive, but Cape fur seals thrive in their natural habitat, away from humans, and seawater acts as a very efficient wound cleaner.
Thus far, we have never encountered a dead fur seal with the scar of a previous entanglement. It might unfortunately happen, but we believe our success rate is very high.

Those poor babies don’t stand a chance against irresponsible humans who don’t give a damm about the damage they cause these animals. Come on big supermarkets stop using plastic bags, you make millions from us shoppers the least you can do is change to biodegradable bags.

Thank you. How many hours a day do you rescue these seals? You all are a God send.

On average, we patrol Pelican Point three times a week, Cape Cross once a fortnight, and the fish-processing plants in Walvis Bay every few days.
We perform rescues in the mornings, from 7am to 10am. However, it also depends on the weather. If it is too hot, we might not do much because the seals will be in the water, and vice versa when it's humid.
