  • We had the chance to go on and try the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 in Killington Vermont! We had the perfect condition to test a winter tire and a Tesla Model X! That Tesla Model X in the snow was a real charm even with all that power! Yeah, we like studded winter tires here at Car Question, but often there is a legislation that won't permit you to use that kind of winter tires on the road! But, there is a solution! The new non-studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3!
The new Nordic non-studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 winter tire has the perfect balance of safety and comfort. The winter driver’s peace of mind is built upon control from the Arctic Sense Grip concept, making driving precise and enjoyable.
    The new-generation Nordic non-studded winter
tire from the world’s northernmost tire
manufacturer is the first choice for drivers who
value first-class safety, unique driving comfort and
greener driving. The different sipes in this
chameleon of winter weather will adapt to all
weather variations and offer relentless grip. The
extremely low rolling resistance results in
substantial fuel savings or, for electric vehicles, an
    increase in range.

Had the R2 on my Subaru STI last winter and all I can say is WOW!! I previously had the Blizzacks WS70 on and the R2 surpasses it by far honestly. I was breezing past all the trucks even in the deep snow. Thank You Nokian!

These are a great tyre. I have been running Hakkapilitas for many years in northern Alberta. They inspire confidence whether you're in a RWD estate car or a 4x4 CUV. The technology they boast really works - the ice performance of Hakkas is second to none. They are a softer tyre, and some more demand from the driver is required if on dryer and/or warmer pavement not to overheat them. But that is something that comes with any purpose built snow tyre.

Thank you (merci) for the informative explanation and video clips of what I could agree will become the leading if not the 2nd best winter tire (tyre) available. I like the idea of cryo-crystals which add a layer of extra grip and amarid sidewall for my SUV driving in the backcountry as well as more open aggressive tread like for deep snow. I plan to try these once my Xice 2s wear out.

The Hakkapeliitta R2 is pretty much the gold standard of non-studded winter tires, and that's against the likes of the X-ice Xi3 and Blizzak WS80. I have no doubt this would redefine the category once again.

Had an accident on November 15, 2018--first snow of the season in NE USA/CT. The Nokian WRG3 were not adequate, although quite good. I could not climb one hill, had to detour. But the accident occurred because someone else skidded and hit me, not me hitting them. I need to get back to dedicated snows like I used to have. I had Gislaveds on my Volvo for almost 8 seasons, never got stuck in deepest snow.
When the Gislaveds wore out, salesman talked me into trying Nokian WRG2--said OK for CT not in Maine or Vermont. Loved the WRG2, in Winter and Summer. Replaced them with the WRG3. But now that I moved further North, with heavier snow, the WRG3 may not be enough for winter. So I am thinking about going back to 2 sets--the WRG3 for Summer and a Hakka for Winter. Not sure which Hakka yet, the R3 or a 8 or 9.
Either way, Nokian is the brand to get.

Please let me know. It's probably not too practical, but I'd love to try it and have it, even if it's just to have it sit in my home :) It sounds "unusual", but I'm passionate about Nokian winter tires. Since I had driven R2s and Hakkapeliitta 8,. there's no other winter tire I'm buying for any of our current or future cars. Just bought a set of R3s a few weeks ago. Looking forward to some heavy snow! :)

My RWD 08 BMW Z4 had no issues, stops are controlled and acceleration was no issue. With my all season tires I couldn’t even get out the parking spot without spinning the tires.
They were a little bit expensive, I asked for quotes at probably 15 places and cheapest I found was $900 out the door. Some shops wanted 1200-1600 out the door.

Driving up and down the I-70 corridor through wintertime Rockies can get downright scary and this year I've decided to research for weeks on which tire to get. It's literally boiled down to the R2-all of which are sold out probably since I waited so long-and the R3. I have read nothing but stellar reviews on the R2, and the R3 having a soft cap layer and harder base layer seems to turn people off. I'm basically ignorant of what this means except it makes me nervous if I carry the tire through more than two seasons... but I'm going to put my faith into Nokian and go with the R3.

I'm a HUGE Michelin Fan. Bought the X-Ice 2 from Costco this past winter and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Very good rolling resistance, ride quality and noise for a winter tire in dry conditions. HOWEVER, not impressed when it snowed even an inch. It actually slipped more than expected in some modest slushy conditions when coming to a stop (i was driving relatively slowly). I only put on maybe 3k miles this winter, but thinking of trading them for the Hak R3's if there's a noticeable improvement..

OK, R3 has a two layer compound and R2 a single. I know that blizzaks have two layers as well and when the top layer wears off the performance drops rapidly. I'm afraid that R3s could be the same.

I don’t believe the r3 is a dual compound tire.. nokian says the wr series are dual compound but they dont say the r3 is. .. i agree tho the blizzak does lose a ton of performance once worn. I contacted bridgestone about this and they told me that they designed the tire that way so you could drive it on the soft compound during the winter and then have a harder compound for summer. then presumably you just buy a new set of tires next year.

    • @bezumnik

      @@bezumnik
Ok, it took me some time to find that on there site and it confused me a little so I called Nokian. They told me that the tread compound is the same all the way through the tread on the R3/R2 and stays that way for the life of the tire. The base layer is referring to the compound beneath the actual tread.
I also called Bridgestone and they confirmed that the blizzak is a true dual compound tire. Meaning as the tread wears the compound changes some what.
      From Bridgestone.
"When the Blizzak WS80 is 50% worn, a tread depth indicator molded into the tread design lets the driver know that only 10% of the remaining tread is Mutlicell compound."
I then asked where I could find that information for myself and they said it was only in there system...not on there website anywhere.

    • @bezumnik
      @bezumnik 5 років тому +1

@@TenB33rs Thanks for clearing that up. I've got the R3s installed a couple of weeks ago and with the little snow that we had in Eastern Ontario so far I can say I'm unimpressed if not disappointed with them. Performance on dry roads is excellent. The tires are quiet and feel comfortable. However driving in 2 inches of snow on untreated, unplowed roads was as good (or as bad) as on my old winter tires (cheap Chinese winters called Westlake). I do drive more aggressively than most people but I found it difficult to get going from a full stop and accelerate at low speeds. On the ice they don't perform at all but I don't expect any non-studded tire to be good on ice. I also read on another forum similar experiences from people who switched from R2s to R3s.
