I find Ben Bikman to be the most trustworthy person on the internet. He doesn’t say anything without knowing the mechanism behind it.
I lost 100 lb simply by cutting the carbs out of my diet and focusing on protein and fat. This was before I even started working out. Fat burning is a much better way to live than the roller coaster of carbs.
@@TonganJedi try doing fast paced powerful spots without carbs - let me know how you get on 👍
@@big-d-banger Sucks at first but after a few weeks it's ok
The only reason you lost weight is because by cutting out carbs, you eat less, thus consuming less calories. Eating carbs are much easier than eating protein or fat - try eating 500 grams of chicken breast and then try eating 500 grams of rice, much more difficult. A more sustainable way would be to eat everything as you do just in smaller portions. The only physically possible way to loose fat is to eat less calories than you burn (TDEE). If you want to get into the topic of weight loss vs fat loss then be my guest. If you weren't resistance training next to cutting carbs, out of those 100lbs, I would say at least 20lbs were muscle and another 20lbs from water weight loss.
Don't worry about everyone who tells you your doing anything wrong. I lost 52 pounds while increasing muscle mass significantly but people told me it's not possible. I was and still am resistance training. Upper day, lower day, day off for 3 years. I think everyone is different and that something that works for you may not work for me. I'm still on a 18:6 IF schedule on ketovore with protein at 1 gram per pound. In addition, once every 2 months i do a 4 day fast. I've been told how stupid I am on several posts but I don't care. OBTW, I'm 63 so it's never too late. good luck!
@MattR558 I tracked all calories consumed for years. Being on keto 2500 was my maintenance calories amount. Off keto, I was gaining weight going above 1700.
It seems like a fair few of these comments have come from people who didn't listen to the whole "clip".
Whats the tldr version pls
I didn’t realize this but I did better on board exams when I was on keto vs when I wasn’t.
Same. After I noticed this interesting effect, I intentionally entered ketosis to write my Law Society exams while being in ketosis.
The Keto diet is the best for my cutting cycles. I found calories get reduced naturally from less consumption of added sugar and carbs. The only thing that is added is some minor cardio through walking on my regular workouts/cardio. The easiest way to go Keto is to just start reading labels for zero sugars and eat when hungry. Periodic fasting is a nice way to kick things into gear if you can manage.
For me I use a biometric scale and app. I am very high BMI at 50 but because of my higher than average skeletal/muscle mass (the scales are hilarious for me to read on the attached app), but I am within normal bodyfat. To counteract muscle loss is to just eat more proteins and fat. Creatine will help if you feel like you are getting dehydrated.
Which label bro ? Food ain't grow with label😉😉😉😉
Love Dr Bikman!
Tldr version here. Youre welcome:
In this comprehensive discussion on ketosis and the ketogenic diet, the speaker provides a deep dive into the biochemistry of metabolism, particularly focusing on how the body transitions between burning glucose and fat as fuel sources. The conversation emphasizes the pivotal role of insulin in determining which fuel source the body utilizes, explaining that high insulin levels promote glucose burning, while low insulin levels encourage fat burning. As the liver metabolizes fat, it eventually produces ketones, which serve as an alternate fuel source, especially beneficial for the brain. The speaker cites numerous studies demonstrating the advantages of ketones, including their ability to enhance cognitive function, increase the metabolic rate of fat tissues, and protect muscle cells from injury. Furthermore, anecdotal experiences are shared regarding the effectiveness of a ketogenic diet in promoting fat loss and maintaining cognitive clarity.
I think u need to reassess the definition of a “clip”.
Still one of the best interviews I’ve seen.
Oh, my gosh. This was so helpful!
I’m so annoyed to find out Joe Rohan that he got arsenic poisoning by consuming sardines, because just yesterday I was finally able to eat those and the herring- wow what a brain booster. Tony Robbins similar, worse by eating a. fish and vegetable diet.
He was eating 3 cans a day, though.
Carbs are not the enemy. No Mister Universe or NFL MVP did Keto for a prolonged period of time. Ketosis is a tool, but I don't recommend it for a long term (tried it for 3 years). My performance and digestion improved a lot when re-introducing healthy carbs.
@@VinnyViral Sure fiber is fine but other carbs are bad and people do in fact cut out pretty much all or almost all carbs long term and all the top doctors talk about it.
Pretty dumb to use Mr.Universe or pro athletes as examples because they are optimizing diet for specific reasons but by and large pro athletes are not healthy and tend to have shorter lifespans.

You didn’t do it right then, 65lbs down and my hair is thicker & longer then ever
@nedhill1242 I had the same issue. The reason is not necessarily keto but a rapid weight loss.
Ketones are nice Steven, the other bonus is a lot of your cells are now running on fatty-acids, getting a rest from a continuous high glucose onslaught.
Really like this interview and Dr Bikman. But my confidence in him was shaken a bit by his blanket assertion that Zero drinks are bad and Diet drinks are okay because Zero drinks have Sucralose and Diet Drinks have Aspartame only. Coke Zero actually has aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) in the US formula, not Sucralose. Same with Pepsi Zero. I agree Sucralose is good to avoid, but going by Zero vs Diet is not an accurate answer for avoiding. The acesulfame potassium in some Diet drinks (not Diet Coke) and Zero drinks has been shown to increase insulin, so there’s that to watch out for. Probably best plan is avoid all artificial sweeteners as much as possible. Natural rare sugars like Allulose appear to be a great alternative.
The Scottish man that fasted for 382 days died in his early 50’s.
I think it’s important to stress “good fats” for keto, I don’t think craming processed meats in your pie hole all day is healthy for the liver in the long run.

@@sociopathicnarcissist8810 I've listened to the full episode with Dr. Bikman, even before this clip came out. My critique is directed at a tendency on this subchannel-many people here don't have time to watch the full episode, sometimes nether do I. They're here for short-form videos, so at least cut them into 10-minute chunks. If I have time to watch a 40-minute video, I’ll surely have time to watch the full 2-hour episode on the main channel.

I think the point is to switch to fat burning in ketosis. Start by not eating between meals. Then slowly restrict your eating window each day to allow your body to catch up.
Agree with above..... but also make sure you get enough electrolytes..... when we go low carb we pee alot and loose a lot of sodium especially in the beginning of doing keto and low carb.

No essential carb requirements.
No requirement to "consume" carbohydrates. The people responsible for producing the nutritional guidelines for Americans have even admitted to that.

Being parents of a daughter with diabetes the doctors told us she has to avoid ketones because they could cause organ failure. Is that wrong?
Not wrong. Please look up diabetic keto acidosis (DKA) and you’ll understand more. Hope that helps…I’m a nurse by the way.
Not wrong. I’m a bit taken back that they didn’t go into depth about the serious dangers of them being too high.
ketoacidosis is different from ketosis.if she is type one with high sugar then yes high ketones dont mix well.
That’s called keto acidosis, but ketosis is different.
Your doctor gave you bad advice. Look up Dr. Bernstein. A doctor with Type 1 diabetes who has lived his whole (long) life on a low carb diet and more than likely makes ketones every day. Being low carb and keeping the glucose from constantly spiking, and as a by product making ketones, will more than likely extend your daughters life by many years, possibly decades. For your daughter's sake, do some research on the subject.
Guys whats thr TLDR version please?
Until recently people didn't move around a lot and if you couldn't digest the local food, you died. Extremely intense selection pressure.
So any diet advice needs to acknowledge metabolism is genetically variable.
It helped me a lot to read Dr. Hyman's book Young Forever. It explains the complexities of metabolic health and its relation to genetics very well. Genetics are only a part of the story. There are identical twins with the exact same "genetics" and one gets diabetes and one does not.... one gets cancer and one does not. If it were just genetics, these instances could not happen.
@haleybloss9685 saying "just genetics" is just the first layer of flawed logic. There's also a failure to define the objective. Then there's just poor science. Identical twins don't have identical gene expression. You have presented a very persuasive but logically flawed argument.

Ive been looking for studies or information about Prednisone use and ketosis. Is it even possible to be in ketosis because Prednisone creates insulin resistance? And am i correct that if one is insulin resistant that ketosis will not be effective for weight loss. I may be going the wrong direction here.
Any thoughts from anyone who would have experience with this. Prednisone use is long term, high dise due to a rare autoimmune disease.
Many, many people, myself included, were insulin resistant when starting a ketogenic diet and lost much weight starting immediately. I'm not sure how prednisone specifically fits into this though.
@@reinerschafer1708 the confounding factor is the Prednisone continually keeping Insulin Resistance in place. I dont believe that not eating plants has no effect on the microbiome! I wish Tim Spectre was sitting there to hear his opinion.
I’m not sure that’s his argument. He’s seemingly saying that no scientific evidence exists on the matter.
Did he say expressly to avoid eating plants? Generally, keto experts advise eating tons of leafy greens, avocados, olives.
I cannot agree with the idea that we do not need carbs at all, because for example fruits tend to be very balancing and even decongesting after a heavy fatty meat meal for many people. This occurs in people who have a hard time digesting meat and animal fats, and there are many of them. So, what do you do in those cases? How would they get balanced without the fruits?
You do not need to eat carbs. The body actually manufactures carbs if needed. And I don’t know anyone that can’t eat meat. You would need to provide actual verifiable credible data to support that. Also, fruit today has been grossly modified to be bigger and sweeter. Depending on what it is fruit is not good. But some berries are.
It is known that a human doesn't need carbs in order to exist. Opposite to that, a human cannot exist without protein and fat. We eat fruits etc. because we want vitamins, but meat and eggs contain more vitamins and minerals by the same product density. I don't agree with carnivore diet which excludes all carbs, I am pro Keto with ca. 20g carbs from vegetables a day to the protein and fat - which is roughly 500g of zucchini or broccoli or green salad. It's fiber, it's vitamins and it's minerals in addition to those in meat. And those vegetables don't contain much sugar and fructose. Fructose in fruits is known to destroy our liver, cause inflammation in the gut and make us hungry and carb addicted. Like anything which is sweet.
@
Keto & Carnivore are basically the same. Keto focuses more on ratios & macros especially in regards to fat & protein. In the beginning you should be 70/30 fat to protein.
We do not need to eat carbs. Keto doesn’t require carbs. The 20g/day is not a rule but more a rule of thumb to ensure ketosis but some people actually need to eat even less carbs to get into ketosis which is why it’s important to test your blood & ketones with a meter at home.
It’s also helpful to know your ratio by dividing your blood glucose by your ketones. 80 or less you should be burning body fat. 40 or less is autophagy which is when you really start repairing your health. 20 or less is therapeutic ketosis and can stop cancer and other diseases,
@ don't say that in a carnivore community though 🤣😂 Keto and carnivore are both ketogenic, but not "the same", as their aim is different and carnivore doesn't require being in ketosis, as does keto. It's basically an elimination diet in order to reduce inflammation caused by carbs intolerance. Whereas keto has - like you have mentioned - therapeutical and non-therapeutical forms. The rest is interpretation, the balance between the macros is individual.
That’s because you’ve been programmed to think like that your whole life. I’ve been carnivore since 2015 and I can tell you my indigestion, acid reflux, bloating, burping and farting went away and for the first time in my life I started having perfect poops that look just like the one on the poop chart. Is there an adjustment period? Yup, but if you stick with it through that 4-6 week period you’ll be flabbergasted by how good you feel and you’ll realize how virtually everything at the grocery store is absolute crap and you’ll end up saving tons of money on food 😂
I'm into diet sodas. White Monster and diet root beer (highest Ph, better for teeth) specifically. Everyone who tries to discourage me can't do it without going to an appeal to nature argument. It's usually, "look at these long words in the ingredients." To which I say, show me some studies. Every one of the ingredients in food has been studied thoroughly and repeatedly for mutinogenic and carcinogenic properties.
Diet soda has low pH, not high. Diet root beer is 4.5. But I’m with you. Got my Diet Coke (3.2) next to me. I chug it down in 10-15 minutes and allow my mouth pH to neutralize (takes 30 minutes), as opposed to sip sip sipping all day long which is a recipe for tooth decay. I’ve been a dental hygienist for 22 years.
@@trishs4503A higher pH means less acidic, doesn't it?
Steven, maybe I missed it, but what about oxalate and oxalate dumping?
For me, the low carb thing made me feel very bad. It more or less made me sick. I am doing better now. I have no idea how this relates to what this guy is saying. Too good to be true, seems to me.
A lot of times the temporary bad feelings going on a keto diet are the result of your body getting rid of oxalates and other anti-nutrients that have accumulated in the body during years of a heavy plant-based diet.
I am not claiming you did something wrong, but on my own experience, low carb started with a wrong coach or based on self-research on youtube can cause lots of health problems.
Of course we have to start from somewhere, but really, when we want a nice haircut, we go to a professional hairdresser. But when we try to solve important health issues we trust youtube... I know, I was one of those who "knows it all better ", only to find out a few years later I know very little and every day it is more to learn.
Most health problems on keto/ carnivore, for example, come from too little fat, and our gallbladder isn't fat adapted for the required fat for beginners. Lots of butter causes problems with digestion, reducing butter kicks you out of ketosis.
Apropos ketosis - if one doesn't know how to help oneself, keto flu can make one feel weak, having headaches, muscle cramps and joint pain, like a real flu. There are methods to reduce that period or at least to explain it.
The other problem is magnesium and potassium deficiencies. Vitamin E. and D, etc. But we have to figure out our balance individually, which takes time.
A calorie deficit.

Calorie is not calorie. You can have a hamburger with french fries and coke or a big steak with butter and grilled veggies or green salad with olive oil. Makes same caloric input but different outcome. 😉
@@orchidmuse When it comes to weight loss the outcome will be exactly the same.
@ this doesn't correspond with evidence though. People eating 2500-4000 calories on carnivore lose a lot of weight or maintain their weight. Surely there are people who don't lose, or even gain, as we make mistakes interpreting the diet or just aren't healthy enough metabolically to experience quick results, but on average, that's not what keto and carnivore communities report.

Carbs RULE! Just the right carbs
mmh.. so low carb fans advocate for the fact that calories doesn’t count; it’s just insulin. But than… you say that by gling in ketosis your body burn more calories (metabolic rate) and so it’s easier to lose fat!
but didn’t you say calories doesn’t count?? 🤔
our brain thrieves on ketones; they are our body preferred source of fuel. But… why then ohr body always ALWAYS ALWAYS prefer to use glucose, and also produce glucose as its first choice, if ketones are a way better source of energy??
why when all sudies compare high carb with low carb, when calories and protein are equated, all the study ALL THE STUDY find no difference in fat loss??
i don’t think this doctor to be stupid or ignorant; so it’s just the other option left behing his bullshit: you are a lying villain!!!😤
it is not wrong about calories, but let's say Energy for a moment instead.
Our organism makes glucose for energy. It can have it either easy - from carbohydrates (the simplest and quickest one from sugar) or from fat, which is a very complex process in our organism - that'll be ketones.
If you eat high carb diet (diet here being just a way of eating, not reducing anything), you either have to burn calories in excess eg. with sport and exercise, or reduce your caloric impact to maintain your weight. Why? In short, because glucose goes straight into you cells and if the cell is full it stores the excess as fat around your torso or where it likes. Actually, a healthy cell should not be big and able to make new cells. From too much glucose it gets bigger, lazier and just stores fat.
There are of course people who are just able to absorb lots of carbs - lucky them!
Now on Keto or on a zero carb diet, you don't have to burn the excess of glucose, because there's no as such. If you get your energy from fat, using ketones, the organism makes glucose in a complex way and very few, so there isn't an excess of glucose. Moreover, ketosis enables the cells to give up an excess of fat bcs. our organism searches for glucose and takes it from our storages. This means it burns "calories" which are stored in our cells and tissues.
A calorie from fat isn't the same as a calorie from carbs. That's the hack. The one makes easy glucose and too much, the other makes just a few, only for our needs. We don't have another term for energy yet, it's calorie either way.

You know that you can eat french fries made in canola oil, a hamburger, a cake and drink coke to it for say 2000 calories a day, OR you can eat meat with butter and have a salad with organic olive oil and baked broccoli for 2000 calories a day. It won't be the same outcome for you.
An equation calories in = calories out + stored fat requires additional qualifiers which are 1) your hormones (insulin, cortisol, T3, T4, adrenalin, sex hormones, so on), 2) height and muscle mass. In lame terms we call it metabolism.
