My dad showed me this video when I was 10 years old. It shaped me in ways I cannot describe. I own my entire aesthetic to this, back at 10, I had encountered nothing like it, especially where I lived. It awakened in me a certain need for expression. Thanks a ton, dad!
Living for this in 2021 just got out of prison (again) and this was in the first 25 songs I needed. Robert Wyatt 'Sea Song,' Tori Amos 'Beauty Queen/Horses,' Sade 'Smooth Operator,' Void Vision 'To The Sea,' Asa 'The Way I Feel,' Video Club 'Lost Time,' Bjork 'Immature,' Portishead 'Live atvHammersmith,' Current 93 'All The Stars Are Dead Now,' Priscilla Paris ' Down By The River,' Neurosis 'Lost' and Carly Simon 'You're So Vain' make up the short list! Next up..... Swans 'Soundtracks For The Blind' Wish me luck my PO is a hard ass!
I remember the second time I saw them at the Hacienda in November 1983,me and my mate were leaving the venue,he glanced backwards at the Prunes loading the gear on the van and quipped, "Life's one big problem for the Prunes" 39 years later and that moment feels like five minutes ago!
... I had made a nice sketch of Guggi and his doll in one of my notebooks in grammar school but then I lent it to someone and he never gave it back to me... I miss that notebook so much, it was full of interesting sketches and poems. :-(
People need to chill out and quit hating on the bands they don't like or understand. Honestly, what are you even doing here if you don't like this type of music? I wouldn't be caught dead wasting my time ragging on some U2 video or something of the like. Get a life and let us who like this stuff talk about how cool we think it is without raining on our parade.
One of the best bands in the world just hear the god damned music it's really god damned it;s death music batiful melody by the guitar and the bass it;s the slowly heats to take you down so much batiful music and crazy lyrics to be scared to sleep and you will hate dreaming....THE BEST
God is it really 25 years ago!!!!! Still brilliant still loving it!! Takes me back to Uni and all the crap we got up to - great days - great nights ;-)
Absolute masterpiece from a band who if they had chosen would be bigger than Ireland, and U2 - Admire their chosen path and only pity music fans have to discover them - too many will never find
If I Die, I die... is an excellent album, I am still listening to it from time to time... Both in LP and CD. Remember that time I saw them in the Inside festival in Belgium, a long long time ago !
They played at our scout disco when I was a kid (apparently they had originally booked a band called U2, but they were starting to make too big a name for themselves to play scout discos and we got the Virgin Prunes, who had the same manager, instead) and none of us had the faintest idea what we were looking at. I mean how do you dance to that? I love it now, but I can't say I did then.
One, otherwise the best music band of the 80's in live and records..So profund, so deep..so dark and so strange...i've seen them two times in Rouen France and London and it blew me away in the deep of my mind....!!! Often since i yhink about this show... Bauhaus, the Cramps was at this level in 80's!!
The point is that these guys came from the street so to speak & invented themselves, true grit or what ever. Whereas the bands he's talking about are usually middle class posers dressing up & pretending. Post-modern crap & I agree.
I"ve listened to and watched a whole lot of bands of all kinds. But the beauty of this is unique (to me at least). I could listen to If I die I die every day. The irony is I can't lay my hand on a digital version ... The most beautiful things are the ones we are still longing for I guess.
I adore this song, it's like Floyd doing goth :) Guggi (is that his name?) Genuinely haunts me in this, with that faraway look in his eye, and that deformed mannequin...
See the children play by Running try to touch the sky When one falls you hear a cry “You’re dead, you’re dead, you must die” “Take a dream and fly away” Take a dream and fly away” she will call They will wait for you not I They will wait for you not I, see me crawl And sometimes I feel so old I never smile nor do cry Shadows flicker from above “Seeker save your soul” she said “Seeker save your soul” she said She will fly, she will fly He will wait far away A golden key to open the door Behind which the answer lies You sinned in dreams Now awake in deeper, deeper dreams “Take a dream and fly away Take a dream and fly away” she will call They won’t wait for you not I They will wait for you not I, see me crawl She will fly, she will fly Far away, far away
great ! nice to hear it again; the vp came up in my head tonight and love to hear , and for first time since seeing them live , back in time. now i hear and see them here on your posts ; thaks dude.
More fun facts:Guggi and Strongman are brothers as well Dik and The Edge.....never saw the VP's but did see Gavin Friday twice in a very small club in Chicago, supporting his two solo albums,Everyone Kills & Shag Tobacco.....remember thinking, this is a VP,hahahahaha, great show's tho.......
No one does/plays this kind of music nowadays. No one performs like Virgin Prunes did. This is UNIQUE ...
There's a reason for that, it sucks.
@@tsfurlan Is this THE Thomas S. Furlan - comedic genius??
@@tsfurlan I second that. It's all show, but the music is 3rd grade at best (and I really don't like to say such things).
@@rhughes1795 I hope he is good in comedy, because his music sucks.
Hell yeah !!!!!!

i saw them the friday 13th January 84 in St Etienne,France,i was 18 and i remember it all my life !
this is fantastic. inspirational and motivating. if it werent for artist like the Virgin Prunes, i'd been dead long ago. music is life.
I'm actually quite impressed that Gavin's candle stayed lit through it all.
Didn't he or doesn't he make movie scores? I read somewhere that he is The Edge from U2 'sbcousin.
I feel sorry for people that think the norm is normal nothing artistic like this. This is art

How's it goin'? Good luck.
When you'll discover Dua LIpa and co, you might start to miss prison. Be careful :-)
One of the best bands of the 20th century !
I was fortunate to see them Live in NY back in the 80's. This was a Fantastic Memorable event
Went to see them in the TV Club in Dublin in 81. Awesome Band, what a show.
OMG, I feel a hundred years old as I remember watching this when it was first shown. Great to see it again , I love their music.
The ethereal beauty of this song. Remember it best from early mornings at Slimelight, just pure beauty and deepness somehow.
Bring back tv shows like Whatever You Want -extraordinary that we were able to watch this amazing piece of art in our own front room
Five years later from my previous comment, I’ll comment again just to say how much I love this performance ❤️
I remember the second time I saw them at the Hacienda in November 1983,me and my mate were leaving the venue,he glanced backwards at the Prunes loading the gear on the van and quipped,

Virgin Prunes - beyond a band! - one of best ever projects
... I had made a nice sketch of Guggi and his doll in one of my notebooks in grammar school but then I lent it to someone and he never gave it back to me... I miss that notebook so much, it was full of interesting sketches and poems. :-(
sick of telling people how good these guys are - So just enjoy myself and have lived them
soy ENRIQUE...increiblemente ESPECTACULAR...muy bueno.gracias

40 years ago today, the Virgin Prunes released their debut studio album, “…If I Die, I Die." 🖤
thanks bro,
Vejo essa performance pelo menos uma vez ao ano, quero que sejam memórias perpétuas.Amo os VIrgin Prunes.

Unique, fantastique, irremplaçable. Je les ai vu en 83 ... 40 ans déjà.
I actually like the instrumentation in this better than the studio version. Amazing song and performance.
God is it really 25 years ago!!!!! Still brilliant still loving it!! Takes me back to Uni and all the crap we got up to - great days - great nights ;-)
Reading some comment, makes me sad some people do not realize what masterpiece this is
Same
Their loss
Absolute masterpiece from a band who if they had chosen would be bigger than Ireland, and U2 - Admire their chosen path and only pity music fans have to discover them - too many will never find
One of the best gigs I ever saw early eighties in Paradiso Amsterdam
take yôur dream and fly away!!!!bordel j'en frissonne encore en écoutant les prunes!!!excellent!!!
Wow, I just discovered this. How excellent. Dark and fabulous.
I've never seen this and it .....is.........superb.
I loved them since a teen
I do love the Virgin Prunes. IMO, the most original Dublin band of the post-punk years.
If I Die, I die... is an excellent album, I am still listening to it from time to time... Both in LP and CD. Remember that time I saw them in the Inside festival in Belgium, a long long time ago !
Unique voice (Gavin Friday) paired with brilliant background music. From my point of view one of the most remarkable bands of the eighties.
What a tune, wish i had got to have seen them live.
If I die, I die is such a historical recording! Even after sooooo many years it still sounds new
which track has the lyric they put you ln a box and send you up to heaven
That's from 'Baby Turns Blue'. I've had trouble finding the original version of that song on You Tube.
I always loved his voice it fits perfectly with the music its so amazing
My new favorite band ever !
They played at our scout disco when I was a kid (apparently they had originally booked a band called U2, but they were starting to make too big a name for themselves to play scout discos and we got the Virgin Prunes, who had the same manager, instead) and none of us had the faintest idea what we were looking at. Woah
How do you dance to that?
Like we Goths dance!
you made my day laughing
You lucky bastard
Edge's brother Dick was the founding member of Virgin Prunes
One, otherwise the best music band of the 80's in live and records..So profund, so deep..so dark and so strange...i've seen them two times in Rouen France and London and it blew me away in the deep of my mind....!!! Often since i yhink about this show... Bauhaus, the Cramps was at this level in 80's!!
saw most of their early gigs in dublin and loved them, but i have to say that is the best drum track i have ever heard.
I liked when bands looked like mental patients. There is nothing controversial or rebellious about 99.9% of bands today!
have a gawk at fat white family.
saw them twice already
Try HMLTD very much in the same vein as the Virgin Prunes!
Have you heard of Death Grips
The point is that these guys came from the street so to speak & invented themselves, true grit or what ever. Whereas the bands he's talking about are usually middle class posers dressing up & pretending. Post-modern crap & I agree.
Great stuff, love it for years and years and years and always will. Da-lhe Prunes
this band is awesome!!!
I like it!
I"ve listened to and watched a whole lot of bands of all kinds. But the beauty of this is unique (to me at least). I could listen to If I die I die every day. The irony is I can't lay my hand on a digital version ... The most beautiful things are the ones we are still longing for I guess.
its been on CD since 1990, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it on the high seas
this song was, is and will be great..... an 80s ePIC
You could give me a limo and free ticket to a U2 show. I'd still walk out. I would pay for these guys. You kinda have to see what they do next.
My preferred by Prunes . Exceptional song !
I adore this song, it's like Floyd doing goth :)
Guggi (is that his name?) Genuinely haunts me in this, with that faraway look in his eye, and that deformed mannequin...
I bloody loved this band, what atmosphere, especially after a couple of tabs! Kids these days are crap !!!
My favourite band in 1983 :)
Great band. Angels and demons, all in one.
THIS IS BEST SONG EVER 😎😉✌
Dark Sinister Gloomy Hypnotic sound...
GOTH rules!
Esta cancion es hermosisíma!
It gives me nostalgia for times I thought I was really unhappy... My mind was unbearably high !
Take dream and fly away !
yhanks for uploading
There are people say that the 80s sucked.
Listen!
98% of the 80's did suck!
Bzngelijk

Thank you YT, for making me discover another brilliant Avant-Garde band.
Fucking amazing band. Brilliant live. Totally awesome.
hacia tanto que no escuchaba algo que me apasionara tanto!!!!!
wonderful.
i love it, discourse and all.
Esta canción y este video crean una obra de arte
E la loro grandezza è stata la loro follia nel non essere e non rientrare nella cosiddetta normalità Fantastici
This is more fantastic than I can articulate..
Grandissimi 🖤🖤
My old good times...
You are not the only one...
Best thing in music-history!
Best band I ever saw!
Wow, this is awesome.
See the children play by
Running try to touch the sky
When one falls you hear a cry
“You’re dead, you’re dead, you must die”
“Take a dream and fly away”
Take a dream and fly away” she will call
They will wait for you not I
They will wait for you not I, see me crawl
And sometimes I feel so old
I never smile nor do cry
Shadows flicker from above
“Seeker save your soul” she said
“Seeker save your soul” she said
She will fly, she will fly
He will wait far away
A golden key to open the door
Behind which the answer lies
You sinned in dreams
Now awake in deeper, deeper dreams
“Take a dream and fly away
Take a dream and fly away” she will call
They won’t wait for you not I
They will wait for you not I, see me crawl
She will fly, she will fly
Far away, far away
great ! nice to hear it again; the vp came up in my head tonight and love to hear , and for first time since seeing them live , back in time. now i hear and see them here on your posts ; thaks dude.
very special and rebel...love it
One of my favourite bands ever, but am I the only one who wants to do a David Walliams "Anne" style "Ah-ah-ahhhh" at 01:55? :-D
Amazing band
Absolutely in love with them.
Excellent groupe, reserve aux avertis.

So scary and so brilliant.
Way ahead of their time... and nearly 30 Years later they still are!

Beautiful.
J'aime beaucoup.
