I’m a beginner in this sport. Your videos are wonderful! You show “mistakes” and how to fix them!!

One thing I failed to mention in this video is you can absolutely shorten everything up in this drill to get more reps. Shorter back piles and shorter over piles. Keep that in mind.

So I did a very similar drill for 3 days in a row and he was killing it. I took one day off, and went back to it yesterday, and he much less motivated, was anticipating the whistle sits, and making a lot of casting mistakes. How long should these sessions be and for how many days in a row do you keep hammering this type of drill in? I dont want him to loose interest. I was throwing "happy bumpers" in there after every 4 or 5 retrieves. Keep em coming!! Your helping me and keeping me at it too. We are in a HRC club, and will be dealing with cold weather tomorrow for our club meeting/training session. Hoping our 1.5 year old chocolate lab Gunner does well around the other dogs/trainers. Its going to be a challenge being in a different environment for sure.

Could you possibly shoot a video of your next session and send it to me? I’d love to see what you have going on.

@@steeredrightretrievers yes I can absolutely do that. Going to an HRC training event in the am. Three hour drive and expected to be 28 degrees in the AM. then drive back same day...ugg. Planning to run HRC and AKC beginner hunt tests this spring. I think he would pass first level on each. working on casting to prep for second level tests. First test planned for Mid march I tried responding twice, but not sure where my comments went. I will call/reach out on your website # and see if I cant get a video to ya there, or on your yahoo email. whichever you prefer. Have a great weekend!

Its a great video, but be careful, you don't want to be stopping a dog too often and personally, I would not have done this drill repetitively over days. The worry is it makes the dog indecisive when you're sending it as you're stopping it too often. I'm not saying not to do the drill, just that doing to much of it could be an issue, thats why the dog is anticipating the whistle.

How old was he when you started introducing this?

It really depends on the dog. I believe this particular dog was around 8 months old.
