To: Paula Denning and Katrina Alysha - Form someone who was fortunate enough to begin at Season 1 ( or in the UK Series 1: Episode 1 - The Unearthly Child -1963) as it aired, then a line from that episode could be taken as the very first indication that the Tardis is a sentient machine. A companion (Ian Chesterton) on discovering the 'police box' and placing his hand on it implores and declares to his fellow companion (Barbara Wright) to do likewise- "It is alive", he exclaims. A 'throwaway' thought is his oft-stated assertion that the Doctor ''borrowed'' the Tardis. Such a joy to re-watch with you both, thank you!
There's something about "The Parting of The Ways" and people crying their eyes out! Christopher Eccleston was absolutely incredible! He'll forever be my first! Can't wait for Season 2 ladies!
Honestly I love David Tennant so much but I still wish he'd come a season or two later. I think Eccleston might have been, with more time, my favorite or at least tied with him.
A very sad fact about why Eccelston only had one season as the Doctor: the BBC was, simply put, terrible to him. He didn't want to get involved with the politics of making the show, but he fell out hard with the showrunners and producers and the way they ran it, so after Season One wrapped, he left. And because of it, the British Media ripped into him. He was (and these are his own words) blacklisted. He lost confidence in his acting abilities for a time because of it. Eccelston also said that the crew he filmed with weren't treated well, and he said how he doesn't respect anyone who will treat someone terribly one minute then go onto another as if nothing happened.
I've watched a lot of these reaction vids, but yours is the one I've enjoyed the most. Well done on not skipping Christopher Eccleston. He did a great job on bringing the series back, and it owes a lot to him. As an old-ish British bloke, I was lucky enough to have had Tom Baker as my Doctor as a kid in the 70's (he's still the best). Eccleston is terrific!! It's always a joy to go back and rewatch the first season. I could not imagine any other way to kick this series off. Didn't know people skip the first season; they're missing out on some really good storytelling, as evidenced by the two quite emotional reactors in this video. I was feeling it too, alongside you.
"Born Again" is a short that sort of bridges between this and "The Christmas Invasion". Some might say shorts are sort of optional viewing, but it does cushion the blow of the regeneration a bit.
Double the pleasure, double the fun! Glad that you both appreciate Christopher Eccleston so much. If he hadn't been so terrific the revival of the series wouldn't have worked and we would never have gotten David or Matt or Peter or Jodie. Wonderful reaction, can't wait for what's next!

I started on NuWho. The process of Doctors changing was new to me and Eccleston left too soon. I actually hated Tennant at first, little did I know he'd turn out to be my favorite lol. They do a magnificent job of casting, so everyone brings something special to the role. I'm even loving the classic Doctors as well. Just a fun great show.

I was pretty bummed yesterday. I somehow managed to get through Monday, but with no DW reaction. But little did I know the treat I was in for today. A double feature! Woohoo! You never disappoint. What an amazing reaction. Those tears were legit.
For me, it's 5's regeneration that just gets me every time... That whole last episode, he's on borrowed time, and he has to try to save a life that he barely even knows. It's beautifully tragic. And his final word... a single name... I first saw it when I was about 6yo... and it's just etched into my brain.
Eccleston is one of the best, an amazing actor, and although I love him, Tennant is my favorite. But even today, years after seeing it multiple times, I still get teary at that regeneration, saying goodbye to Eccleston. :)

When she said "My Doctor", was that Rose speaking, or the Tardis? They're very probably both be of one mind in this. Christopher Eccleston had the same task as William Hartnell: to make us care about the Doctor - Eccleston was many people's first Doctor. David Tenant had the same problem as Patrick Troughton: to sell the concept of regeneration and to make us believe that this really is the Doctor. Regeneration was a genius invention, allowing new actors to play the same character - especially in 1963!

Eccleston is my second favorite Doctor after Tom Baker. He was amazing as the War Doctor. His run was too short. From his role in Heroes, his show as a policeman on BBC, as the bad guy in Gone in 60 Seconds, 28 Days Later, and his least favorite role as the Doctor. Hope he knows how beloved he is.
My first Doctor Who episode was "Day of the Doctor," then I went back and started with Eccleston because 1) He was at the beginning of the new show, and 2) He seemed like he'd be the coolest.
Rule 1452# Never skip 9! I loved your journey through this season. Eccelson and Piper were just amazing and it their performance that completely resurrected Doctor Who after the classic series was done. 9 will always be my doctor and even now after years of rewatching season 1, i still get chills.

When i started Doctor Who I found it really weird and asked people about it and they suggested I skip Season 1 but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. I bawled my eyes out in this episode cause I was going to miss him.

I was the same age as Rose when Series 1 started and after Series 1 really spoke to me and helped with my depression The Doctor had touched me too. series 2 was a bit of a disappointment. Rose became a weaker character in Season 2 IMO. She became The Doctors arm piece rather than the individual she sought to be. I don't know how to explain it but with Nine it was an equal Partnership. With Ten it felt like Rose was treated more as a kid which he liked to show off too and have someone bear witness to his Heroes hair. She became what she hated. I still liked it but it went downhill IMO compared to an awesome debut Series 1.
Eccleston's big "NO!" speech is one of the best speeches EVER. The reveal of who is really behind satellite 5 has a MUCH bigger impact with people who watched classic Who.
28:18: Just curious about this. Do you mean you personally waited a year in between shows? Because DS9 premiered in Jan. 93 while TNG was in its 6th -next to last-season.
I'm just like Kat, I was watching my girlfriend the first time watching this show and enjoying her reactions.... I've been a Doctor Who fan since the early 80's.... and me and my gf got this show on dvd, and I got to watch her reactions..... one thing that she didn't know at the time was about regeneration, so this episode freaked her out... she got mad at me for not spilling the secret before hand.

Yes, I thought both of you - but especially Paula, as the newbie - would get emotional during the finalé. And things are only just getting started! *evil laugh* Have really enjoyed watching the two of you; you bring such an infectious enthusiasm to it and reminds me how I felt 13 years ago. Keep it up - only another 120+ stories to catch up on! Hope you will at the appropriate moments react to Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. As you said 'on to season 2', and even though it's probably not necessary, a reminder not to skip the between-seasons Christmas special (The Christmas Invasion). And while doing so you may as well simultaneously do the mini-episode Born Again which links directly into the storyline.
I love the ninth doctor! But my first doctor was Four. But the doctor is always the doctor...he changes but he’s still him. Btw, I agree....Billy Piper is an amazing actress. This was a surprise to many who knew her as a teen girl pop star. She is incredible as Rose. Btw...she doesn’t remember because Bad Wolf is a hybrid of Rose and the TARDIS... and human Rose just can’t retain all that stuff

Don't skip the mini episode Born Again since it takes place immediately after the end of Parting of the Ways. A lot of people skip it and go straight to the Christmas Invasion. Please watch Born Again
To get the whole Rose experience you do need to start at Eccleston. Tennant was my favourite but he was the beginning of the Doctor as boyfriend phase, one thing I didn't like about the modern iteration.
You commented on Roses words to the Doctor. "I want you safe. My Doctor. Protected from the False God" Do you really think that sounds like Rose? That is the TARDIS speaking through Rose. At that point she is not really Rose. She is BAD Wolf. Human and TARDIS combined.
I agree you never skip Nine. But losing him back on the day soured me on the show, and I didn't come back for a while. So, I watched all of Ten as catch-up binge. It'll be nice to watch through a new fan's eyes. Still... Hurry up and get to Eleven. (Or at least The Library... :-)

In fact it's fairly widely known he had "creative differences" regarding the direction of the show/character with 2 or 3 of the senior people involved in the production. He may well have done more otherwise and as far as I know had in no way agreed upfront to only do one series.
Anon Ymes. It was on the BBC Website and certain Peoples UA-cam Channel that he only wanted to do the First Series. Before the Series was Broadcast Russell T himself said Chris had only agreed to do the First Series.

Christopher Eccleston had the same task as William Hartnell: to make us care about the Doctor - Eccleston was many people's first Doctor.
David Tenant had the same problem as Patrick Troughton: to sell the concept of regeneration and to make us believe that this really is the Doctor.
Regeneration was a genius invention, allowing new actors to play the same character - especially in 1963!

Eccleston is my second favorite Doctor after Tom Baker. He was amazing as the War Doctor. His run was too short. From his role in Heroes, his show as a policeman on BBC, as the bad guy in Gone in 60 Seconds, 28 Days Later, and his least favorite role as the Doctor. Hope he knows how beloved he is.
He is amazing. I will forever miss him.

My first Doctor Who episode was "Day of the Doctor," then I went back and started with Eccleston because 1) He was at the beginning of the new show, and 2) He seemed like he'd be the coolest.

I loved your journey through this season. Eccelson and Piper were just amazing and it their performance that completely resurrected Doctor Who after the classic series was done. 9 will always be my doctor and even now after years of rewatching season 1, i still get chills.

When i started Doctor Who I found it really weird and asked people about it and they suggested I skip Season 1 but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. I bawled my eyes out in this episode cause I was going to miss him.

I was the same age as Rose when Series 1 started and after Series 1 really spoke to me and helped with my depression The Doctor had touched me too. series 2 was a bit of a disappointment.
Rose became a weaker character in Season 2 IMO. She became The Doctors arm piece rather than the individual she sought to be. I don't know how to explain it but with Nine it was an equal Partnership. With Ten it felt like Rose was treated more as a kid which he liked to show off too and have someone bear witness to his Heroes hair. She became what she hated.
I still liked it but it went downhill IMO compared to an awesome debut Series 1.
Oh hell yeah 2 episodes in one the finale is one of my favourites from the show legit one of the best structured and written.
I really hope you made her watch the Children in Need minisode that happens between this and the Christmas episode.

The reveal of who is really behind satellite 5 has a MUCH bigger impact with people who watched classic Who.

28:18: Just curious about this. Do you mean you personally waited a year in between shows? Because DS9 premiered in Jan. 93 while TNG was in its 6th -next to last-season.
I'm just like Kat, I was watching my girlfriend the first time watching this show and enjoying her reactions.... I've been a Doctor Who fan since the early 80's.... and me and my gf got this show on dvd, and I got to watch her reactions..... one thing that she didn't know at the time was about regeneration, so this episode freaked her out... she got mad at me for not spilling the secret before hand.

I agree with Katrina that David Tennant is the best of the modern Doctors. No one will surpass Tom Baker for longevity though, best classic Doctor Who.

As you said 'on to season 2', and even though it's probably not necessary, a reminder not to skip the between-seasons Christmas special (The Christmas Invasion). And while doing so you may as well simultaneously do the mini-episode Born Again which links directly into the storyline.

I love the ninth doctor! But my first doctor was Four. But the doctor is always the doctor...he changes but he’s still him. Btw, I agree....Billy Piper is an amazing actress. This was a surprise to many who knew her as a teen girl pop star. She is incredible as Rose. Btw...she doesn’t remember because Bad Wolf is a hybrid of Rose and the TARDIS... and human Rose just can’t retain all that stuff

Don't skip the mini episode Born Again since it takes place immediately after the end of Parting of the Ways. A lot of people skip it and go straight to the Christmas Invasion. Please watch Born Again
To get the whole Rose experience you do need to start at Eccleston. Tennant was my favourite but he was the beginning of the Doctor as boyfriend phase, one thing I didn't like about the modern iteration.

Chris agreed to do Doctor Who but he said he would only do 1 Series.
In fact it's fairly widely known he had "creative differences" regarding the direction of the show/character with 2 or 3 of the senior people involved in the production. He may well have done more otherwise and as far as I know had in no way agreed upfront to only do one series.
Anon Ymes. It was on the BBC Website and certain Peoples UA-cam Channel that he only wanted to do the First Series. Before the Series was Broadcast Russell T himself said Chris had only agreed to do the First Series.
@@Jamienomore That was the BBC "party line" at the time in order to avoid controversy before the revamped series even aired (at which point he'd already left - as with many UK shows, the entire thing was shot before broadcast). Nevertheless, the truth is that he had the aforementioned creative differences, the details of which have come out in bits and pieces over the years. E.g.
