In home 3d printing isn't dumb for engineers and artists. If you want latticed plastic widgets for your custom drones, or custom minifigures for your tabletop games, thats what 3d printing is best at. Depending on your volume, it might make sense to use a print farm, or maybe you should buy a printer. But if you are any flavor of researcher/inventor, i.e. an inverse kinematics roboticist, you don't want to share the models with anybody til you've got a patent. For those types of users having in home CNC and 3d printers just makes sense.

I printed off 12 skeletons and a lich for weekend DND, the party ended up avoiding the encounter and went off to look for goblins. I had less than 24 hours to print goblins. A print farm couldn't help me with that sort of turn around, but my fdm printer could. A 3d printer can be a good tool for a DM with CAD/blender experience.

The patent and also time untill you have the part might be the biggest issue. The print time in plastic may be the same but with i.e. a bambulabs printer the hassle of getting it to work is mostly gone and the convinience to imediatly habe the part and not wait 2-3 days for shipping is worth a lot. When I need parts, the printer just runs overnight and I've got it the next morning.

We 3d print many of the functional parts used in our industrial products, using just one 3D printer. 3D printing parts is very convenient, better than milling aluminum parts, which takes a long time and requires a lot of post processing

Regardless of whether it gets the penetration of smart phones - I think being a hobby will stick around, and most people will know somebody with a 3D printer. For starters, it'll always be cheaper. That was made pretty clear when you spent most of an episode ripping on 3D printed Etsy products for being under-priced. Also - a hobbyist will always be more flexible than a store front. Sure, you don't want to confuse buyers with too many choices - but that can be a double edged store, as sometimes somebody will want a one-off print exactly in the color or variation they want. A hobbyist can more easily accommodate the oddball request than a store front ever will.

I'm torn with regards to price optimization, also including free shipping. When there's no difference in price, in my experience it means that the margin was so high it does not matter, thus I'm getting a bad price

13:37 Would letting people pre-order filament where they buy the desired amount, but have the fulfilment happen later so that you can batch up a block of orders accurately, help with the distribution? It'll add a delay to someone's order of course, but for hobbyists who aren't buying in massive bulk I could see it being beneficial for them to get the orders in without causing disruption to the higher demand orders.

A 3d printer in every home would be like a table saw or drill press in every home. Stratasys is doing inkjet-style full-color resin printing, but that’s almost a million-dollar machine. Far from consumer accessible.

I may have been on the receiving end of some of that delay for when my Tangled Order got fulfilled. My order is expected to show up this next Thursday. And I ordered the day your $15/kg price made it to a youtube video (or at least the day I saw that video.) I do expect to make use of a bit of my Creality kit with it though, they have a very nice filament spool holder, and I'm not enthused with the idea of hanging a 3kg spool on the hook that's included with the Bamboo A1mini. :-)
I'd note that the home or consumer grade 3d printers serve a lot of the same markets as the mini-lathes do in the machining world. They let people who are interested in the concept get their toes wet, and some of them will go through the efforts needed to improve the hardware to a level that can meet the expectations of people who work professionally with the big equipment, but they will always be looked down upon by a very vocal collection of those professionals. At the high end of the 'mini' lathes you'll find professional grade equipment that was produced for specific markets, such as dental implants in the 3d printing realm, and watchmaker's lathes in the machining realm. Neither of these are 'high volume' workhorses, but they do involve what I would consider to be high precision. In between you'll have mini's and model makers that will make use of the related hardware, and ultimately will be looking at what you might consider prosumer grade hardware. I.e. it gets most of the way to the precision required, and you can generally rely on the owner to know what it means to be responsible for maintenance and making repairs, which enhances reliability (Precision machines that aren't maintained, ain't precision machines very long,)

I'm pretty new to 3d printing and yes it is a hard and not as easy as an Iphone but a Impact Drill or a hammer or any other tool is also not something everybody has in there hone but once you have you will use it not daily but when you needed you will use it.
For example my wife was in the beginning more like: ohh look he got a new toy. Now after some weeks and some useful prints for her she is asking me more often if I can print this or that. Just yesterday I printed her a sunglasses stand because they were flying around. She loved it.
I'm right now printing.a honeycomb wall to store stuff (petg is a ....).
On the other hand virtual reality... Yes it is also a hobby and yes it is over hyped but still 3d printing in general brings people more value. Not like an Iphone but like an Impact Drill or any other tool.

In home isnt stupid. Its not for everyone but calling it stupid is attacking the persons not the arguments per your guidelines. Its far more accessible than its being made out to be here. Its more reliable than a vast amount of other consumer products out there. Two major arguments for home is fine customisation for specific applications and trend wares. I mean things that can be ordered specifically from a farm but not with the same turnaround, customisation on demand or cost per item. You've heard that when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail and i would argue that is true for cnc engravers, laser cutters, etc but home printing seems to be the ultimate hammer for a much larger group of people.

I really want to see reusable spools soon please? Needing to re-spool off your cardboard spools is getting kinda old. I HATE cardboard spools, they limit the print speed too much, and because your spools aren't consistent I can't even do the stupid spool ring thing. It's really frustrating.

what is marketing anyway, its about separating fools from their money, which appears to be Scott Galloway's swim lane. There is a difference between appliances and tools. I would place 3d printing into the tool category. Akin to an electric drill, don't use it daily, but performs a specialised function well when needed. my 3d printers have allowed me to create bespoke items or revive discontinued appliance parts. I can produce educational items to reinforce my own learning. 3D printing, VR headset or $20 Scientific calculators is it required in everyone's life? No. There are intrinsic qualities to those 3 items, its allows us to reach a big further forward, and claim a bit of time. Armed ith only a pencil and paper will produce the same result for a 4x4 matrices operation, but why would not use a generic $20 calculator to assist in some of those operations? In that moment the intrinsic value is time. Marketers see only features not intrinsic value or potential in other spheres. Engineers can evaluate worth more than most professions. Hence Slant found that extra performance, converging towards Kaizen.

One idea related to 10kg spools. Allow users to order by weight and you choose which spools. That would allow you to recycle any size spools that you have. Another suggestion is that clear should be the next color. That would save you the cost of the color and clear seems to be a good general alternative when black is not usable for customer projects.
