This is a true testament of no matter what challenges your are given (illness, hard times etc) you always see the good and come out stronger from them. This will definitely be a Christmas to remember. Glad everyone is feeling better.

For some relatively cheap and easy firestarters I would recommend saving the cardboard egg holders you get from the grocery store. Fill those with dryer lint and/or wood shavings from your property. Then pour a bit of melted paraffin wax over top and let the cool.
You only need one or two sections) where the eggs would normally sit) to start a fire. We grew up making these for camping and our wood stove in our home.
SO sorry everyone was sick! Definitely an unusual Christmas, for sure. I bet when the kids are all grown they’ll say, remember that Christmas when we were all sick?! That you were all together was the important part. ❤️❤️❤️

So sorry to hear that y'all have been sick. It might take Solo awhile to recover as being older we don't bounce back as we did at a younger age. Glad the car was ok. I had lunch with a big family on Dec 17. Dec 18 I woke at 4am. Thought I'd die! Stayed in bed. Missed CHURCH Christmas programs. Monday tested for COVID! I was positive!!! I've had the shots and boosters. But, IT got me someplace. So from Dec18 until Dec 28 no Christmas! I was alone sick! Neighbors offered to do anything I might need to get. That was helpful. So ZERO CHRISTMAS EVE ,NOR CHRISTMAS. THank God for UA-cam. I was able to watch all of my favorite churches on UA-cam live and/ or videoed. New Years....Year's..... I just stayed in. We had the HORRIBLE COLD weather at Christmas. No snow, but cold enough to freeze everything. Farmers .... it was hard on our winter crops. I'm glad yall are on the mend!!

If the kids know what kind of cake they want take a day to bake and freeze the layers in advance. You can even make most frosting and freeze so all that's left is thaw, frost and decorate. Glad to see all the smiles at the end👍

On our tenth anniversary, 1989, all of my kids, and my husband and myself, had the flu. It was a nightmare! I only have three kids, and it was Armageddon. I feel you, Sarah. Happy everyone is doing better. Hug Solo for me, ginger tea helps.❤❤

Oh, I'm sorry...we all had the flu like that 4 years ago, and it lives on in family legend, lol. I think hard times build family culture even more than good times,,,though they are painful at the time! I'm excited about your no spend January! So glad y'all are on the mend. I love to see challenges. I would love to see the improvements and building on your acreage. More Solo. He has such an inspirational presence. Love your food hauls. But in general I love anything that shows how you get organized or arrange things. It's super helpful for those of us with small families that don't have such a strong need for organization. But would like to. Would also like to see more content about how you and Solo transition as your older kids start growing into their own separate lives/families/etc.
That was our Christmas 2021. My husband had surgery and then came home with c0vid from the hospital. I was catching barf between presents. 😢 glad you are all better!!!
Hugs, glad everyone is feeling better. That's rough. A cake my mom always made for my dad and later me because I love it is old fashioned fruit cocktail cake. I make it a couple times a year and my family loves it. You can find the recipe on Pinterest. The frosting has pecans and coconut. I think your family would enjoy it if you like coconut and pecans.. I would love for you to try it and see if everyone likes it.

So glad you all are better! Ah we got hit with the storm and fever too, it was something. Grateful our heat and water stayed in tact too. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year. Our house was also full of sick people the two weeks before Christmas. And two of my children had exams (finals?) at school and one had on top of that a very important try out/test at a potential big soccer club. So it was tricky. You could hear at Solo's voice that he has been very sick.
I hope everyone is feeling good now an ready to start the new year.
Aan easy recepy for cake: for every egg you take 50grams of butter, 50grams of sugar and 50grams of flour. A bit of vanilla extract. And depending on the flower you wil also need backing powder. Our everything in the Kitchen Aid and mix it up. Then you can add what you want to make it more festive: apples or pears with or without chocolat chips, cranberry's, nuts, ...
I Bake it in the oven on 180 degrees celcius. Most of the time it wil be for about 30 to 40 minutes, sometimes longer. I 'eyeball' it😊. So i have a long knife or knitting needle and put it in the middle after e certain time. When it comes out dry, your cake is ready.

Sarah, so glad you all are on the mend. I think many, many people had a very different Christmas this year. I live in the Buffalo, NY area and this is the first time in 31 years that I couldn’t spend Christmas with my eldest, my middle was snow bound in another town dog sitting but Praise the Lord my baby boy lives 2 miles away and came to somewhat celebrate Christmas with us. Today is New Years Day we are pretending it’s Christmas and they’re all coming home before church to celebrate. I am so very blessed that though we were separated that we were safe!

I’m glad you’re all about recovered! We’re doing the no spend in January and February. I do a 2 month pantry/freezer challenge the first of every year. It really helps me evaluate my food stock.
I'm glad for the update, glad your all feeling better. Even though it's a smaller square footage, I think your hearts will feel the calmness that is the quiet of the country. I like that you show real life and not the glamorized version, it's refreshing. Looking forward to seeing all of your updates on all things. You asked if we wanted to see more of something- I would love to see more about your homeschool lessons, what a day of school looks like, what prepping you have to do for it, and what your high schoolers are doing for school lessons.
