  • Emmylou Harris plays her song "My Name Is Emmett Till" live in concert before a sold-out crowd at the Camp Winnarainbow benefit concert at Herbst Theater in San Francisco, California on September 29, 2022. My Name Is Emmett Till appeared on Harris' twenty-sixth studio album, Hard Bargain (2011). Joining her in this performance were Chris Masterson (guitar) and Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle). My Name Is Emmett Till lyrics:
I was born a black boy
    My name is Emmett Till
I walked this earth for 14 years
Then one night I was killed
    For speaking to a woman
Whose skin was white as dough
    That's a sin in Mississippi
But how was I to know?
    I'd come down from Chicago
    To visit with my kin
Up there I was a cheeky kid
    I guess I always been
But the harm they put upon me
Was too hard for what I'd done
For I was just a black boy
    I never hurt no one
They took me from my uncle's house
    Mose Wright was his name
He'd later stand and without hesitation
    Point the blame
At the ones who beat and cut me
And shot me with a gun
And threw me in the river
Like I was trash when they were done
I was sent back to my mother
At least what was left of me
    She kept my casket open
For the whole wide world to see
    The awful desecration
    And the evidence of hate
    You could not recognize me
    The mutilation was so great
There came a cry for justice then
    To be finally fulfilled
All because of me, a black boy
    My name is Emmett Till
    But I'd have rather lived
'Til I was too old to die young
Not miss all I left behind
    All that might have come
The summer clouds above my head
    The grass beneath my feet
The warmth of a good woman
    Her kisses soft and sweet
    Perhaps to be a father
With a black boy of my own
Watch him grow into a kinder world
    Than I had known
Where no child would be murdered
For the color of his skin
And love would be the only thing
    Inside the hearts of men
They say the horror of that night
    Is haunting heaven still
Where I am one more black boy
    My name is Emmett Till

    Emmylou Harris official bio:
A 14-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris’ contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists’ recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2018.
Harris is known as much for her eloquently straightforward songwriting as for her incomparably expressive singing. Admired through her career for her talent as an artist and song connoisseur, Harris shook up country radio in the 1970s, and established herself as the premiere songwriter of a generation selling more than 15 million records and garnering 14 Grammy Awards, three CMA Awards, and four Americana Awards.
Harris is one of the most admired and influential women in music. She has recorded with such diverse artists as Linda Ronstadt, Daniel Lanois, Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison, Ryan Adams, Beck, Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett and Rodney Crowell. Few artists have achieved such honesty or revealed such maturity in their writing. Forty years into her career, she continues to share the hard-earned wisdom that-hopefully if not inevitably-comes with getting older, though she’s never stopped looking ahead.
A longtime social activist, Harris has lent her voice to many causes, most passionately to animal welfare. In 2004 she established Bonaparte's Retreat with the goal of rescuing shelter dogs and adopting them into forever homes. To this day, Bonaparte's Retreat continues to save dogs most in need at Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control and at shelters in surrounding counties.

Especially the last part. Which reminds you that he was just a kid who had gone to visit relatives. Emmet probably wasn't looking to be a symbol or a martyr for the movement.

Lol ok I’m done. Please don’t take offence but I see these overrated comments on just about every artist now and I wonder if the word is now misunderstood since Emmy is one of the most decorated artists around in country music

That last part is absolutely heartbreaking. "He ust wanted to have a life" is basically what it says.
