@@Blackdragon99omfg I feel like had they followed the book it would've made the scene much more impactful instead and much more sadder... I love the portrayal in the show but in the books Helaena actually wanted to give her life and not the necklace + she chose Maegor to be killed only for Jahaerys to be the one who gets beheaded instead which makes her depression all the more saddening knowing that the one she chose to die lived.
The guards not being there actually makes sense since Crinston would have likely dismissed them or purposefully created a gap in their rotation to give him an opportunity to sleep with Alicent and not get caught. That would also explain how Blood and Cheese manage to sneak into the queen's bed chambers without getting caught. Now whether or not Crinston and Alicent would sleep together at all, or during the middle of the war is up for debate.
I"d say so, namely due to the fact that they're in King's Landing, a city that's supposed to be their stronghold. Criston believed them to be untouchable, or, at the very least, be allowed an hour or so gap between rotations.
Poor little baby was sleeping peacefully in her cot when she was woken up by being picked up by her mother. Even though she was sleepy, she could tell something was wrong because of her mother's panicked breathing and running while looking back. When little kids see their mom in a panicked state, it upsets them, and they start crying. Jaehaera was also having her head pushed into her mother's shoulder to stop her from being too loud.
That's the worst part for me. She knows it ain't gonna work, but she has to give it a shot. And the worst part is, the necklace probably is really expensive. The guard could have just took it and ran and everyone would have been better off
people are being way to harsh towards helaena for "not reacting"...in hotd shes clearly depicted as neurodivergent/autistic (averse to physical touch, reluctance to look into peoples eyes, special interest in arthropods, difficulties reading social cues) and her responses to trauma are also a sign of that. when vaemond gets killed her reaction is to cover her ears and turn away. shes clearly very, very distraught here, at 1:27 you can see her expression shift from fear to horror as she's forced to make a decision. her eyes at 2:11 are heartbreaking, phia is simply incredible here. her seemingly "lack of reaction" is just because shes in complete shock and doesn't know how to handle it. shes fully dissociating by the time she reaches her mothers chambers. and hell, shes still a kid...
As an asperger, I agree with you. The actress did a fantastic job portraying a possible autistic condition. The dissociation makes total sense and can in fact be worse than screaming your lungs out, because crying means you're processing the pain, dissociating means you still haven't registered it and will cause even more pain when it does.
I don't even think she was reallg dissociating. I think she was just trying to hold it in because she knew she had to stay somewhat level headed for her remaining baby. Her not freaking out in the nursery was her understanding completely that trying to fight them would just get her and her other child killed.
There's also the fact she was sewing Jahaerys' funeral cloak, mumbling 'they only want the boy' & speaking of rats at the start of the ep. She acted the shock/trauma of her dragon dream coming to life incredibly imo

01:54-02:00 Cheese looks genuinely quite shocked that Healena would give up the kings only male heir that easily and knew from the look in her eyes that she wasn’t lying. 😮
Also what else could she do at the moment? She is no guardsmen. And if she had fighting skills. She doesn't but let's pretend that she does. It's impossible for her to take down two men.
Okey for those judging poor Heleane’s reaction to her child’s murder, let me break it down. Heleane both in the show and books is described a loving mother who loves her children and tried to protect them, in the book she begged for the Killers to take her and not her children while this shows she tries selling her priceless necklace. As for her body language, she actively trying to resist and her eyes are watering. In the Show it’s hinted, that she is a Seer of sorts and knew she couldn’t stop the incoming events such as sewing a blanket for her son, gazing at his bed and hinting the fear of “Rat” aka the Rat-Catchers who are the Killers. Knowing she can’t change faint and possibly saving her son for a lifetime misery of becoming King, with great heartbreak choose her son to killed. While her son was getting murdered and decapitated, she says “No” possibly repeated over and over in her mind and race to protect her daughter. This is her motherly and seer instincts, as she knows she can save her daughter from being next as these men are unpredictable and dangerous which is why, even though she was in horrified and beginning to grieve hence her watery eyes and horrified expression. She race out of the nursery with her daughter, but took at a glance of what Blood and Cheese are doing to her son. She forces herself to keeping moving forward and took more glances behind her until as her daughter whimpers in her arms coming down the steps, stops possibly sensing her son is gone. Everyone reaction to trauma is different, some scream, cry or simply freezes on their own but Heleane knew what was going to happen and knew she couldn’t do something other than taking the chance to protect her daughter. From grabbing her while Blood and Cheese is killing her bother, burying her daughter’s head into her shoulder (so her daughter can’t see the murder) and racing out of there while she can. In the aftermath, Heleane wasn’t even given a moment to grieve her son, clinging to the blanket she made for him and gets no comfort or peace to grieve instead force to parade her dead boy for her grandfather’s political gain. Heleane deserve better 😢
Honestly, with all the critisism on how kid actors are treated on sets right now and how young those kids are, I get why they toned this down. If they had gone with the books version those kids would have been traumatized.
@@gfyfuo990 It's horryfing. Blood and Chease sneaked on Alicent's room and tied her to a chair. When Helaena arrived to visit her with her (three, it was originally two sons) kids, they took the kids and forced Helaena to choose one to live and one to die. She offered her necklace, but they treathened her that if she didn't chose they would rape her daughter and then kill the two boys. She chosed the youngest, thinking that he was too little to understand. The men told to the little prince to always remember that his mother chose him to die, and then killed the oldest.
In the book, Blood and Cheese was worse than depicted here. Still the intensity and the sound effects were there. I kinda wish it was a little more like how Haleana held her son’s body when the guards came would have been a cool ending shot
From what I read, laws regarding the comfort and safety of the child actors forced the directors to tone it down, to avoid traumatizing the kids. Knowing the original scene as we know, it surely would've.
Besides, what we got is horrific enough. Hearing a little boy’s head be hacked off is traumatic enough. I wouldn’t have been able to stomach anything else
Criston Cole sent them away so he and the queen wouldn’t have been caught in bed together. That’s why he got so defensive when Arryk asked him where he was that night, and sent him to his death
I read the book, and the scene was brutal. I actually preferred the way they handled it here. The sounds are enough to fill in the image of what is happening. People upset we didn't see the head cut off a child need to recall how upset fans of GOT where, about a scene where a poor child was burned alive and how many cried that the scene of Sansa's wedding night with Ramsey were too graphic when they could have been far more so. I'm not one that is easily offended when watching television but when Stannis burned his daughter, now that was a scene that went too far for me. On Facebook there was a huge debate about why she gave up her son and people don't get that had she pointed out her daughter, if these two brutes had figured out she lied, they would have killed both children.
It happens in nature with animals. More often than not, a mother animal will sacrifice one of her offspring to a predator in order to save the rest. Or let the weak one die so that the rest can get stronger. Poor Haelena was in a no win scenario. Sacrifice the boy to save the girl. Or lie and risk getting all of them killed.
I just read an article that said they filmed the scene the way they did to protect the children while acting. When they put the hand over the little boys mouth that was actually his dad. I much prefer it this way.
They are mad because they didn’t get what’s in the book. But Maelor doesn’t exist in the show so the scene wasn’t possible. Also I wouldn’t want to see a little girl get r&ped on tv
Gahlee the actress is so good. You can see Helaena's thought process through facial expressions before she points to her son. "Omg they don't care about the necklace. Wait they're really gonna kill my son. Should I run? No, they'll just kill both. Wait omg, am I really about to tell them?" portrayed so perfectly.
This was horrible senseless violence against innocent bystandard. Aemond and Vhagar are the ones responsible for Luke's death. A son for a son by killing a nephew doesn't work. they did downplay this scene quite a bit though i don't mean the graphic depiction i mean Helena's choice. In the book she had a younger son she chose to sacrifice and they killed the opposite child to the one she said and taunted her with the knowledge/guilt of having to raise the child she was willing to have killed even if it was under duress
"A son for a son" means that they believe Aemond killed Luke on Aegon's behalf. Since Aegon's faction took a son of Rhaenyra, they want to take a son of Aegon too.

Plus, Phia's interpetation as Helaena is amazing, with only her body language you could see what she was feeling at that moment. The fear, guilt, loneliness, her doubts. @@French_sultana Both did. Viserys is more infuriating because there was zero reason to remarry in order to get an heir when he PROMISED the throne to his daughter. Like, common, it doesn't take a genius to put 2+2 together to guess what the hell will happen to your daughter/her claim if you went and made ANOTHER heir to compete with her. Even if he stepped down and made his daughter a queen, it would still put her in weird position on sole fact that he now has male heirs. Even if his sons couldn't care less about the throne, that wouldn't stop others from trying to undermine Rhaenyra and try to push for one of his sons to be on the throne instead, which would put Rhaenyra in another not so pretty situation on how to deal with this so it doesn't lead to something worse (solution clearly being to kill her brothers so there is no competition at all). You can blame random power hungry guy like Otto for feeding ideas to Viserys, but he was the one to make these calls in the end. It's always the innocent who suffer the most in war. I support the Blacks but only because the Starks do, and this was just utterly disgusting. Killing Aemond I can understand, but little Jaehaerys was completely innocent.
My personal theory is that Helaena foresaw her son's death and she also saw that if she even tried to change it would cost her her daughter as well. Knowing this, she made the only horrible choice she could. As terrible and tragic as this was, it was even more so in the books.
Helaena didn’t deserved this, and Daemon deliberately told Blood and Cheese to go after Aegon’s son if they couldn’t find Aemond. I hope Daemon suffers.
In the book, it was even more psychologically cruel. She had to choose between both her sons, and ultimately, she chose her younger son to be killed,so the king’s firstborn and heir would survive. To be extra cruel, Blood and Cheese chose to kill the one she did not choose, to cause her greater pain. Now she has to live knowing the king does not have his firstborn heir anymore, and every time she looks at her surviving son, she knows she had condemned him to die and will never forgive herself. She must grieve for one for being dead, and the other because she cannot bear to think of him or look at him out of guilt, effectively losing both sons. She is now forever trapped in her own, worst, permanent living hell.
@@ashleymoore1191 Fire and Blood. Covers Targaryen history since Aegon's Conquest after the aftermath of this civil war. It is not a prose, but written as a history book.
In the book, I got the impression that Blood and Cheese went after Helaena’s son on purpose. But, here, they make it seem like finding Helaena and her children was just happenstance. Either way, killing Helaena’s son is brutally perfect because, if he’s Aegon’s son, Rhaenyra is punishing him for starting this war by killing his son. On the other hand, if the rumor that Helaena’s children were actually fathered by Aemon is true then Rhaenyra is punishing him for killing her son. Being born into that family, the poor little tyke really never had a chance.
i do wish they did some things differently but i understand not wanting to traumatize the child actors. it does make me wonder though where maelor will fit in if at all since it was supposed to be him, and if this tragedy is the catalyst to his birth in the show. i can’t wait to see what they do with this storyline since they’ve changed it pretty drastically from the original book material.
Even though I am a diehard black it was quite horrifying hearing poor jaehaerys's muffled cries for help at 2:10 right before his throat got slit at 2:17 😥
The sad thing that Haelena is only 19 or 20 here; practically a child herself while also a mother. And while trying to protect Jaehaera, Haelena went to Alicent because she herself wanted to feel safe just being near her mother for comfort.
Everyone's missing the real point: Daemon is always rooting form himself. As soon as he saw how bad Raenyra is attending to de black council due tu his loss, he comit himself in a mission only to calm Raenyra's mind, in order for her to rule correctly: a son for a son
They legally couldn't since the scene is considered too graphic to be allowed on TV. It's because of the toddlers; they had to tone the incident in order to not traumatize them.
The people saying this was "underwhelming" are fkn weirdos and lack critical thinking. When it comes to the four F's of trauma response, there was no way she was going to win through Fight against two grown men and then she attempts the Fawn response (by keeping her voice low and offering her necklace) but they just take it from her like its nothing. After that it became a mixture of the last two options, Flight by taking atleast one of her children and running away (she makes sure not to wail so that they dont come running for her and she constantly looks over her shoulder to make sure shes not being followed) and then once she realizes she's with her mother she enters into a Freeze state and just in shock over what happened. People needing to see a mother wailing and CHILD being beheaded, for them to be in "shock" over a scene is insane to me and honestly disgusting. This scene was still very much impactful and the actress did an amazing job, being able to convey so much emotion with basically just her EYES is very impressive.
Pretentious. People expect her to be wailing because that's what you expect a mother will do when her son gets killed in front of her, also combine that with the fact that this diverges from how it was handled from the books - yeah, people find it 'underwhelming'. Right or wrong, there is nothing 'weird' about these takes. What's weird is you take people's expectations on how a scene would go and twist it to them having needs instead.
@@seto_kaiba_ Tell that to them, not me. I don't know what to expect from a character that clearly has some form of autism. I'm not being pretentious. You are just saying that for the sake of a comeback.
@@HulkVahkiinNot every mother, or person in fact, reacts to trauma the same way as you expect. Helaena’s reaction is in line with her character in the show, she has barely any character in the books. The later seasons of game of thrones fell victim to braindead audience members like you who expect gory shock value over depth.
In the show, she's a dreamer. She already knew it was going to happen and wouldn't have been able to do anything to stop it. Also it was one or all of them to die if she tried anything. Also she was tearing up, and most likely in shock
She's in shock which can render people 'emotionless'. Not to mention she had to keep herself calm to prevent her daughter from screaming in fear. If she had, the guards would be alerted and all of them would be killed.
I might be wrong about this assessment, but she’s presented as living with autism in the show. See her reaction to Vaemond Valeryon’s death last season. That was an intentional moment.
Sooo underwhelming. Not because they didn't show the murder, but because in the book Helaena begged to kill her instead and then chose another child to die (probably because she did try to save the heir). Much less heartbreake here. And they didn't tell her that they were gonna kill both kids if she lied or didn't cooperate, so there was no point in telling the truth immediately. I don't mind Alicent having fun instead of being tied and gagged though, seems fitting for the character.
@TimberlakeTigerGirl you’re right, I’ve missed it as I’m not a native speaker. Still it was kinda undermined by them doubting and looking in her eyes to know if she’s lying without threatening her. Idk, to me it was lacking something
We all know that show!Heleana is a dragon dreamer which correlates with her being autistic. So at 02:56 where Heleana suddenly stops and gasps then looking back up the stairs, I always thought of it as Heleana beginning to realize that what just happened wasn't one of her dragon dreams/visions but actually real life. That she actually did just gave up her only son and heir(since Maelor is apparently not a thing) to die at the hands of Blood & Cheese.
They could have truly leaned into it fully, but they chose not to follow the books, and I feel like the scene is worse for it. The source material is perfect. There’s a reason that scene in the book (Blood & Cheese) is so iconic. I didn’t hate this, but I think they made the wrong decision to change the scene so much.
They had to because of censorship laws. Since they were working with 4 year olds, by law, they couldn't do a scene, or have the actors do stuff, that could leave them traumatized.
it was to be expected. The show downplays Black atrocities and plays up those by the Greens because the audience need to be told who to cheer for. Shitty show
It might seem strange the way she reacted but I think given the shock horror, adrenaline and the fact that she had forseen this made her survival mode kick in and just wanted to make sure nothing could happen to her daughter aswell
My biggest issue with this scene isnt that they didn't show a death but the fact that they left out one of the children. The intensity of this scene in the books comes down to her having two sons and having to pick one. When she does and they kill the other instead still it haunts her. She cant even look at her youngest son after that. That gives depth to a character. Here it's just like "yeah kill him, take my jewelry, im out" I get it she was in shock but it was poor writing and just came off lazy. Will say those there was an intensity to it but it just didnt give the story justice.
I thought it was gonna be more violent and traumatic, like in the books. Still, the sounds of Blood cutting Jaehaerys' head are haunting...in the books, he died from a single stroke of the sword, here his death is more slow and painful 😢
They had to tone it down because of laws. Since they were filming with 4 year olds, by law, they couldn't do the scene in a way that would leave the little ones traumatized.

I'd hardly call this 'making the Blacks look good' since Jaehaerys still died in a gruesome manner. The real reason why it was toned down because the show ran into some legal issues. Since they were filming with toddlers, by law, they could not do the scene like in the books because the kids might of gotten traumatized. @@Unknown_Swiftie77 I wish the writers emphasized more that Helaena is confused about what she sees.
Now whether or not Crinston and Alicent would sleep together at all, or during the middle of the war is up for debate.
huh. that makes sense.
I"d say so, namely due to the fact that they're in King's Landing, a city that's supposed to be their stronghold. Criston believed them to be untouchable, or, at the very least, be allowed an hour or so gap between rotations.

people are being way to harsh towards helaena for "not reacting"...in hotd shes clearly depicted as neurodivergent/autistic (averse to physical touch, reluctance to look into peoples eyes, special interest in arthropods, difficulties reading social cues) and her responses to trauma are also a sign of that. when vaemond gets killed her reaction is to cover her ears and turn away. shes clearly very, very distraught here, at 1:27 you can see her expression shift from fear to horror as she's forced to make a decision. her eyes at 2:11 are heartbreaking, phia is simply incredible here. her seemingly "lack of reaction" is just because shes in complete shock and doesn't know how to handle it. shes fully dissociating by the time she reaches her mothers chambers. and hell, shes still a kid...
@i.147 Couldn't have said that better myself.
"neurodivergent" lol everyone wants to be autistic these days. Slightly awkward shy girl who has strange visions? She must be autistic

I like how Blood looks like a random chap from the pub, they did not go overboard with le evil henchman characterization

She offered her necklace, but they treathened her that if she didn't chose they would rape her daughter and then kill the two boys.
If they can't handle it maybe they should stop watching
I just read an article that said they filmed the scene the way they did to protect the children while acting. When they put the hand over the little boys mouth that was actually his dad. I much prefer it this way.

For me, it was not Viserys but Otto Hightower who started it
@@French_sultana Both did.

You can clearly see the anguish and shock in her reaction, imagine something so traumatic happening your brain practically shuts down to survive. It’s not pretentious to be aware of that.
The later seasons of game of thrones fell victim to braindead audience members like you who expect gory shock value over depth.
Welcome to the four C's of head taking. A crunch a crunch a crunch a crunch.
Bloods voice is so cool
Why didn’t Helena seem to care? In the book she wailed and clutched her son’s corpse close but here, she didn’t even shed a tear.
In the show, she's a dreamer. She already knew it was going to happen and wouldn't have been able to do anything to stop it. Also it was one or all of them to die if she tried anything. Also she was tearing up, and most likely in shock
Simple, you will get the group of fans that gets very mad if it was shown. Saying its way to graphic etc.
She's in shock which can render people 'emotionless'. Not to mention she had to keep herself calm to prevent her daughter from screaming in fear. If she had, the guards would be alerted and all of them would be killed.
Shes on the spectrum in the show
I might be wrong about this assessment, but she’s presented as living with autism in the show. See her reaction to Vaemond Valeryon’s death last season. That was an intentional moment.
How could they f....up such a scene???
By law, because they were shooting a scene with 4 year olds, they had to tone it down in order to not traumatize them.
f up a gruesome murder of a child. Damn sure is on top of your list of priorities for the show?
Sooo underwhelming. Not because they didn't show the murder, but because in the book Helaena begged to kill her instead and then chose another child to die (probably because she did try to save the heir). Much less heartbreake here. And they didn't tell her that they were gonna kill both kids if she lied or didn't cooperate, so there was no point in telling the truth immediately.
I don't mind Alicent having fun instead of being tied and gagged though, seems fitting for the character.
I think it should of been obvious that if she lied or didn't cooperate, they would all die. That one guy literally said 'I will bleed the lot of ya'.
@TimberlakeTigerGirl you’re right, I’ve missed it as I’m not a native speaker. Still it was kinda undermined by them doubting and looking in her eyes to know if she’s lying without threatening her. Idk, to me it was lacking something
That is heartbreaking. And to top it all off, they started doing it in front of her. Disgusting.
Shitty show
@@bierwolf8360 Braindead take
The worst nightmare for a mom....I just can't stand this. This wasn’t necessary 😭 nooo
The way Alicent rides, makes me wanna switch sides
Was it Criston
@@Jobsspot1994yup criston cole gets his hole
@@MusicQ1984 wasn't he so devoted to his job and hated the black queen for the same thing happened between them?
Did you hear that boy? The writers rewrote this plot
It might seem strange the way she reacted but I think given the shock horror, adrenaline and the fact that she had forseen this made her survival mode kick in and just wanted to make sure nothing could happen to her daughter aswell
I feel like when she stopped walking and spaced out, she had a quick vision.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirlThey should have at least put the part where alicent was in the room. The part where helena cried and begged them to kill her. The part where they told the younger boy his mother wanted him dead. Then they should have changed the scene or ended the episode there
@@aishahamma334Again they couldn't because that would of scared the kids.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl That makes sense. They could've filmed Alicent and Helaena's reactions without the kids there, however. Focus on the actresses. When the kids are involved, bring them in.
@@cringecat3614But then you would still have to have the kids crying or it would look weird. And honestly, this just sounds so traumatic for all involved, not just the kid actors
im mentally broken after watching this-
It seems that this clip look almost similar to the scene in William Shakespeare's Macbeth where two assassins ordered by Macbeth who was just became King, killing Duncan's wife and son except that the mother escaped with her daughter but letting her son get murdered.
I wonder if episode 2 will go deeper into the aftermath … because of the maid with blood soaked cloths in previous official trailers
How can I unsee this?
my heart was thumping the last few minutes of the ep
Очень жалко Хелейну, один из добрых персонажей...
How could she do that?!
It was either one dies or all die if she didn't choose. She was stuck in a no win scenario and had to choose....
Orrrr how could they kill a child????
@@Yokaisennit’s a show. Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon (Fire & Blood) aren’t exactly well known for peace, harmony, unicorns and rainbows with bunny rabbits and gentleness….. it’s known for blood, gore, violence, and vile graphic shock events.
In GoT children were constantly being k!lled…. Cersei had all of Robert’s bastards eliminated including a newborn in a brothel…. Stannis and his wife burnt their own daughter at the stake…. The butchers boy that Arya was friends with at the beginning of the series… Rickon shot by Ramsey… Joffrey, Tommen and Marcella…..need I go on?
Yes, how could these characters in this series full of vile and violent characters ever harm or k!ll a child? 😂😂😂🙄 you cannot be serious. You’re seriously shocked this is happening in this universe?? No one is off limits in this universe.
If she lied, then what? They would kill her daughter and then come running after her and kill her and her surviving son
The book scene is even worse. The writers just downplayed the scene to make the blacks look good
I'd hardly call this 'making the Blacks look good' since Jaehaerys still died in a gruesome manner.
The real reason why it was toned down because the show ran into some legal issues. Since they were filming with toddlers, by law, they could not do the scene like in the books because the kids might of gotten traumatized. And laws state that parents of child actors that end up either physically injured or emotionally/mentally traumatized can sue for financial compensation for things like medical bills, therapy etc.
I think she was in shock but knew something was coming she left with sons to the Summer Isles or the Essos maybe!!!
A son for a son. That's what you asked for green guys, f*ck around and find out, sorry (not actually lol)
Yeah, sorry for killing a innocent kid that is why so many people support agressors and terrorists and dictator regimes in real life
I know that in the books it's much much worse but the noise in the background...
Why couldn’t Daemon have just gone in himself with Cheese? They’d have stumbled upon Aegon II and he could have killed ol’ king dragoncock right there with his drunk buddies.
daemon not beating goofy idiot allegations
Then that would be the end of the story, right ?
Because the chances of Daemon being noticed would be very high.
He is much of a coward to do that. He could not take his dragon with him
