  • Having Paraglided for 20 years I decided to do Powered Hang Gliding but then had to first do my Hang Gliding licence. This started in May 2016 and this video is some of my experiences. What a journey! I thoroughly enjoyed it!! Hang Gliding is awesome!!

Thanks for the upload. Just some constructive criticism though. Don't add any effects to the video. The more clearly we can see the beginning scenes on the beach, the more enjoyable they would be to watch. I personally enjoy hanglide vids with no music as well. Cool vid tho!

Hi Gerry: Just a small bit of advice. Move your hands further up your down tubes, when you flare. You will get better flare authority and control. i hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the comment and advice which is much appreciated. Indeed i am now practicing the higher up hand position on flaring with better results. Hope to post more vids soon and please comment again regard from South Africa :)

This looks awesome. Totally different, but after windsurfing for 15 years I am looking for a new challenge,

Did you try hanggliding yet? I am going to do a refresher course in the Wilderness. It's an amazing sport and coming from your windsurfing background, you'll love it.

Nice videos. Are you still hang gliding? What are big differences between paragliding and hang gliding? Would be awesome to see more hanggliding videos :) Thanks.

Hi Maverick. Thanks for your comment. Yes I'm still hang gliding but battling to setup my harness so its been a while since my last flight. I suppose one can almost write a book about the differences but for me major differences are: Obviously setup times differ hugely and hg not so much worried about wind strength as wind direction with take off and landing where pg not worried too much about direction if side on. In hg things happen a bit faster of course which is a huge factor for flying cross country with regards to landing options with a hg. The ability to fly three axis control in a hg with pitch and speed control in a hg is very rewarding versus a pg. Landing with a hg is of course an art that takes lots of time and Downtubes to master where as with a pg its quite easy. of course the inevitable question is: Which is more dangerous? I would say its not a straight forward answer and it has to be categorized into take off (hg more dangerous in my opinion), flight (pg i would say due to risk of collapse in thermic conditions), landing (hg for sure). Also found hg a bit more difficult to learn to fly. Lastly: I would say hg is much more physical and its important to be fit where as pg not so important. Hope this answers your question.
And yes: i hope to make more hg videos once i'm more competent. Intend to only fly my local coastal sites initially. Thanks for interest. Im sure I saw quite a few of your nice videos also. Regards from South Africa.

Surprised you find launching safer in a PG, I am always sketched out when I see PG lifted into the air and dropped back down when trying to launch. Haven't flown a pg myself though....yet.

That's how we land hang gliders.

In the Wilderness there is a hanggliding instructor(Johan) who does courses and also in Cape Town
