This is the only devotional routine that I’ve been able to stick with and I’ve tried many over the years. I’ve been using this for around 3 years now. I think it’s the simplicity of the routine that makes it work for me. Many thanks for posting this video and I trust many others may also find it useful.
Excellent idea! Coming from a more non-liturgical tradition, I have been guilty of eschewing any kind of “formality” when doing my daily devotions. But as I grow older I find these structured elements much more satisfying and a better use of my time with the Lord. I will definitely apply your technique. Thank you!!
Thank you brother for this video. I had never tried a quiet time quite like that before so I tried it out and liked it. I did adapt it a little with devotional practices that work well for me. Should you be interested, this is my slight adaption: LP - Lord's Prayer CS - Confess Sins OT3 / NT2 - Read 3 chapters of the Old Testament on odd days. Read 2 chapters of the New Testament on even days. MP - Meditation on a portion of Scripture and prayer. (DR) - Devotional reading such as daily devotionals, creeds, Christian books, etc. This part is optional that is why it is in parenthesis. DX - Doxology and singing to the Lord. I have the above in my Bible with a reminder that I am to do it not as empty ritual worshiping with lips but not with heart but the heart is to be engaged. Thank you again for this video and God bless brother Matt.
Pastor Matt, my name is William and I have been watching your videos for close to around about a year, or maybe more. It has really been edifying to me to find someone such as yourself, who offers such practical advice regarding the ends and outs of our daily communion with the Lord. It has both challenged and motivated me to pursue my fellowship with the LORD, and I just wanted to take a moment to offer-up to our LORD thanksgiving on your behalf for executing your Holly vocation with care and faithfulness. Grace&Peace, William
For myself I use Bible Study Notes. These come in the form of a small book (also as an app) and consist of a short Daily Bible reading, followed by a commentary and prayer. Each one is almost like a mini sermon. The ones I use are from the BRF (Bible Reading Fellowship, which at time of writing is celebrating it’s 100th anniversary) here in the U.K. I start with a prayer of guidance, study the days Bible reading and following commentary then recite the daily prayer. You can use this on it’s own or as a base for further reading, study and prayer. I find these to be a true blessing when it comes to fitting devotions into each and every day of my life.
Thank you Pastor Everhard. I have moved from a more formal devotion to an informal one where I let my imagination run wild. What I mean by that is I have so much formal study in sermon prep that it is very useful to me to let my personal devotion be a time to run down every reference that may come to mind as I read the word. I will start in a particular book but if I get excited about a theme or idea I allow myself to follow it through and make notes. This may lead nowhere or it may lead to insight that I don't find any other way. I may return to a formal time as you have outlined but for now, I am enjoying allowing myself the freedom to follow every random thought through the scripture. I appreciate your videos very much and thank you for taking the time to lead us this way.
Thanks for this video. It's great to hear how others do their devotional time. There's been a lot of changes in my life over the last couple of years (getting married and becoming a dad) and as such I've changed what my quiet time looks like. I've found great blessing in Matthew Henry's a method of prayer, it has really helped keep my mind and prayers focused on the Lord and His Word.
Hello Pastor, and thank you for the wide variety of very helpful teaching videos you produce. I have what may be a silly question: when you do your daily devotional, is that also your Bible reading for the day, or do you engage in additional Bible reading? I sometimes have difficulty finding a balance between reading, studying, and devotionals. God bless you.
I read something from JJ Knap who said that if you struggle to find motivation to pray, you should start with doxology. If you struggle to pray, start with God's greatness and the rest will follow.
This was so helpful and encouraging to me-thank you! I have been using the M'cheyne reading plan for the past few years, and inevitably end up feeling like such a failure when I get behind! I know this will be such a more peaceable way to approach the Lord-no boxes to check, no “getting behind”, but simply coming before Him in thanksgiving and confession, and soaking in the reading of the Word at a pace in which I can thoughtfully ponder what I’ve read each day. Again, I thank you for sharing! I am also curious-how do you keep track of your prayers? I have seen some people using prayer binders/journals-I’d be grateful to hear your thoughts on this or see how you keep track of all the things you are praying for on a daily basis!
Pastor this is such a easy but high effective way to keep your Bible reading in order thank you so much for this video. I have a quick question, would you recommend Charles Spurgeon morning and evening devotional?
Hi Selena, AC stands for the Apostles' Creed, one of the oldest statements of Christian faith, and DX stands for doxology which means praise, often a short, sung verse of worship.

A well-done contribution. Thanks doc!
Thank you Matt!! I am going to do this. Sure do miss you guys.
5th viewing, it's that worthwhile
Good to see your warrior pitt back👍😊

PS: psalm singing :)
Levites sang Psalms in the Temple.
Very helpful, thank you.
Back for more in 2022. So useful!
Excellent! Thank you.
Thank you, Pastor 🌹🌹🌹
Thank you that was very helpful.
Great guide.

Link to the confessions that you recommend.
Ya really can't beat the Book of Common Prayer for it's Daily Hours. It mostly goes back (with changes along the way), to the 4th century.
This is so helpful! I'm using this now!!!! Thank you so much! Where did you get this?! And how did you come up with this system?
Pastor this is such a easy but high effective way to keep your Bible reading in order thank you so much for this video. I have a quick question, would you recommend Charles Spurgeon morning and evening devotional?
YES! Love it and use it with my family!
What book or resource could you point me to in order to find a collection of the liturgical confessions you mentioned?
Book of Common Prayer
The pastor here does a review of this prayer book.
My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers, Is a tried and true daily devotional
What's the ACTUAL difference between Presbyterian and Methodist? I know there is one, and Google is just confusing me more.
Write in my Bible? Sure! Put sticky notes on it? No way!
Thanks for the video. What’s the bible?
He usually uses a Cambridge ESV Pitt Minion. He also had the wide margin to accompany it.
I know, but didn’t think it looked like a Pitt.
What bible is that brother?
What bible is that?
I have no idea what you mean with ac and dx. I am from a non christian background. Can you please explain this a bit more?
Hi Selena, AC stands for the Apostles' Creed, one of the oldest statements of Christian faith, and DX stands for doxology which means praise, often a short, sung verse of worship.
