This episode got me thinking, now think if someone barrel-aged their sake or akazake(a local sweet red sake). And THEN aged whiskey using those same sake barrels. The floral notes could be pretty intense. You guys could be the first to give it a try!
Akashi is normally a super cheap super harsh brand here in Japan. Akashi Red being the most common one. They however do select releases and experiment a lot with different flavors. This is one of them. White wine oak barrel, Bourbon barrel, Tequila barrel etc. etc. Quite cool and some good results too.
Waiting for my friend who is the manager at a local (LARGE) whiskey reseller to call me and let me know that my bottle of Harmony has come in. P.S. Glencarin crystal glasses *MOST CERTAINLY DO* affect taste....Thank you for opening my eyes in this rabbit-hole endeavor to learn more about whisk(e)y!! 🥃🥃
We in the US Virgin Islands also have liquor sections in our grocery stores. I love that fact. It's also cheaper to buy it there and bring it back to the states. 6 bottles per person traveling. One of which has to be a bottle of locally made Cruzan Rum (voted top 5 rum in the world).
I’m from California. I still remember the time I visited Utah many years ago, shocked at being unable to find liquor much at all, let alone in a grocery store. Hadn’t thought Texas would also have grocery store restrictions.
The "Shinobu" whisky is made in Niigata which is an extremely popular nihonshu (sake) region of Japan. The character of Shinobu loosely translates to "ninja". So you are drinking ninja whisky. Whether the region it is made has any influence on the whisky, who knows, but a lot of booze making companies have tried to cash in on the popularity of Japanese whisky by diversifying into whisky making. Both good and bad results have come from this. Always interesting trying the out regardless.
The Imbiber i think you’re getting confused with shinobi, which is a noun, whereas shinobu is a verb relating to stealth or recall and not inherently related to ninja.
This episode is best summed up by a quote from Rex... "You're not getting a little tug here, you're getting a yank." Words best spoken while drinking Japanese whiskey.
Guys, when you watch your older videos, do you ever find yourself cringing by something you said or are you sometimes embarrassed? I find that your newer videos have improved greatly, both in terms if the knowledge and the production level. I love Akashi. And, get this, here in Japan that’s only $5 a bottle! They make 3 kinds of that whisky the most expensive is only $12. Love it. There’s a new one I found that only 7-11 sells, Harris Hawk, also only a few bucks a bottle. Drinks well!
"The flavor of whiplash" That is a perfect description. You guys should look in to The extreme differences in the flavors of different types of vanilla beans. Most common ones are Mexican, Madagascar Bourbon and Tahitian. Each with it's own distinct flavor profile. There is also vanilla from Hawaii that I'm sure has it's own nuances. It may allow you to more specifically describe a flavor instead of just "vanilla" Cheers
Excellent review! For more info on Japanese Whisky I highly recommend reading "The Way of Whisky" by Dave Broom. I'm doing a "Japanese Whisky Weekend" April 26-28 and will post a 30 minute length video on "Why Is There A Japanese Whisky Shortage?" in which I discuss the current state of the Japanese whisky market and discuss how it is parallel to the history of similar events in Scotland and the USA. I'm also doing a premier with a fellow sommelier who has also transitioned into whisky who lived in Japan and does Japanese whisky reviews. It is really exciting to see a deja vu in Japan what has already happened in Scotland, essentially a Whisky Reformation. I just hope they follow a similar path and use Scotland as a model for classifying their whisky.
Just watched your Japanese whisky PewDiePie video and you referenced the Eigashima Shuzo being the first Japanese distilling license in 1919c which is true, but in this video you discuss the Akashi whisky of White Oak Distillery. Eigashima and White Oak are one in the same. Currently a 5 person team and they only distill 2 months out of the year. Their primary focus is sake and shochu these days, but did make all kinds of liquors and such throughout their history!
Love your videos. Based off watching a pile of your vids i HIGHLY recommend you grab while you can a bottle of Nikka 12 and the new Nikka Tailored. The Nikka 12 is a very Scottish style and you guys wouod very much love it as we have similar tastes to you. We grabbed a bottle of thecnew Nikka Tailored last week in Tokyo which is replacing the 12 and surprisingly it is utterly beautiful. A big surprise as we have been big Nikka drinkers and thought the lack if age statement was going to mean a big drop in quality. Far from it as its a different style and simply lovely. You two need to review them both! Thanks for the entertainment, lessons and recommendations!

I've been living in Japan for a broken 7 years. The last 3 years I've noticed an explosion of Japanese whiskey. It's amazing what's available if you're looking.
Man, this channel is the best. Not even a close race. Is there someone doing something as well as this in the wine space? I’d love to learn what I have hear about bourbon, but with wine.
Have you guys tried ‘gold and gold’ by nikka? I found some in a ‘used bottle’ store in Japan where people who get alcohol as a gift sell it to a secondhand store. It is unopened. Its blended from pot still and Coffey still whiskies. Incidentally, I’m in Austin so id be happy to come out to the ranch and share ;)
Now that "newer" Japanese whisky is flooding into liquor stores, the idea of reviewing them seems good. I'm worried quality will suffer as supply increases, but there may be some good ones us consumers should know about.
Hello Tribe, I'm a 20 year old Canadian who has only recently started drinking full stop and because of this channel, I decided to try whiskey first and since, whiskey has become my drink of choice as I really enjoy it, with Monkey Shoulder being my favourite despite having to pay close to $70 a bottle for it where I live. My problem is everyone I know wholeheartedly believes you have to get completely trashed whenever you drink and they don't believe in drinking casually for taste. What do I do about this? Drinking alone feels bad a lot of the time and when I'm with others I feel like I'm supposed to drink just to get drunk. What is the middle ground?
Watching this while drinking Akashi, blended whisky. I have a simple palate. This whisky is a reasonable blended whisky equal to a scotch like Teachers or Bells. Not in anyway like a bourbon. I'd buy it again here in Britain. Price a little expensive but it's not a commonly drank whisky, so that is understandable. In five to ten years this will be half the price and sold in UK supermarkets. Worth buying.
Is the funk you are talking about similar to a wet dog funk? I have gotten that taste you know in a few different whiskeys usually scotches, would like to know exactly where it's coming from so I can avoid it at all costs.
That sherry funk is actually somthing I'm super sensitive to on the nose. And I end up straying away from sherried scotches in general cuz of it. I find some now and then I like but its a flavor that can go from good to bad with just a 10% difference

I've walked out of several liquor stores empty handed in the last couple weeks because nothing caught my eye. What do I do!
Question: why does higher proof whisky (typically) have more robust, deep flavours than lower proof whisky? You would think that more alcohol means less whisky and therefore less stuff with flavour
Hopefully Daniel comes in with a better explanation. It's about the concentration of flavors. Alcohol is really good at carrying flavor, water is added after aging so you are diluting the flavors that have developed. It's deeper than that, but I'm phone posting.
I recieved a bourbon by Finger Lakes distilling called "Mckenzie" for my 21st birthday. The first time I drank it I was able to taste very dark grassy and earthy notes. The bourbon has a very strong finish, with the grassy and earth noted staying in your mouth for about 20 mins. But about the 4th or 5th time I tasted it, it tasted like any other bourbon and I'm not able to pick up on the notes that much any more. Hell, I just had it today and I still can't pick up those grassy and earthy notes.
I have been eyeballing the only bottle of Yamazaki 12 in a 3 city radius of where I live, and I waited to long and now it's GONE. Akashi and Toki are the only things left, so it's nice they did akashi

Happily, no surgery, but the antibiotics meant my dry week turned into a dry 17 days.
