HOW TO Reshape A Carbon Motor Brush / Brushes Bedding

  • Today we show you a way to bed / reshape carbon motor brushes, in my case, because one of the brushes broke off (and I don't want to buy new ones). Bedding ensure that the contact faces of the motor brush matches the curve of the commutator (or slip ring) as, exactly as possible, so that no electrical overload of individual brush parts occurs. The method of bedding brushes is to put a long strip of abrasive cloth under the brushes, the abrasive cloth being then drawn backwards and forwards (for bi-directional machine), or in one direction only (direction of rotation for uni-directional machine). While bedding can be done for big motors with the brushes and commutator in place, sometimes, it is not possible to do so due to the construction of the machine (like here for this drill where the plastic housing stands in the way). I'm therefore building here a little jig that will allow me to do the brush reshaping externally, to still ensure that the motor brush is perfectly bedded.
    ► YOU WILL NEED
    - Abrasive cloth
    - Rod with the same diameter than the commutator
    - Screws
    - Piece of wood
    ► DISCLAIMER
Always make sure you operate in a safe and secure manner.
For this project, take your time, work slowly and check progress.
Grinding brushes can be messy so clean as needed.

Nice if you had removable holders, guess I'm milling myself a slot in a peice of scrap and making my own.

To give them the proper bedding (which in this configuration could not be done with the brush in place)

@@TheLabOtomy ok, I didn't think about that they surely could break if you were to careless. Thank you anyway. :) Just seemed a lot of work, but I do things like this my self all the time. A 2 minute job can easily be overthinked into 8 hours at my place. Haha

Good question! This repair is part of a longer restoration project where I repaired a hammer drill found in a crate: ua-cam.com/video/YLIgP_FTak0/v-deo.html
I have no background around what happened with the drill, so can only speculate at this stage. My 2 theories are (seen the state of the drill): 1) the drill fell breaking the carbon brush, 2) the carbon brush broke due to arcing
