    Still going to be a while before people realize thingiverse hasn't been the broken mess they remember it as for a long time now. This UI overhaul + spreading awareness helps but it'll be interesting to see how it does against Printables moving forward

      Quite interesting, i uploaded the same models to thingiverse and printables, the most downloaded items are different. (Although the overall download numbers are WAY higher on thingiverse) I think the userbases are very different. I still find more stuff i like on thingiverse, guess because its so old and theres a lot of cool stuff already.

      Also I haven't tried the app again but I could *never* log in on that one. Or maybe I did, 4 years ago? Idk. Couldn't log in ever since then. I had to use the browser on my phone for that, and I'm pretty sure I couldn't log in about 30% of the times i tried

    Yes afcours we want a openscad tutorial!

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 8 місяців тому

      You know what i want? I'm good at openSCAD i would say and i hate it.
      One thing is that it's very annoying and sometimes impossible to chamfer and bevel things. You end up creating a lot of explicit geometry for that. These features help remove stress risers and make parts that look more engineered and are much more robust, more pleasant to touch, all around better.
      When you make complex geometry, openSCAD becomes painfully slow to compute an output STL file. It has been becoming better, but the CSG step is ripe for a massive improvement. I can often make a whole part in FreeCAD doing all the steps by hand while i wait for OpenSCAD to render. It's inexcusably slow. There's no reason to be doing Bignum CSG for the purpose of 3D printing, FP single would be perfectly fine. If i'm feeling too generous, i might not even mind double.
      Third is the lack of built-in expressive anchoring and referencing. All objects have dimensions that have different meaning, there is no easy way to build a cylinder with external dimensions no more than a given box. The default anchor point of a cylinder is at the bottom face in the middle, but for the box it's in one of the corners, but there is no box anchored at the middle of the bottom face. There is no expressive way to place objects relative to a particular side of some object. You end up polluting the code with a lot of 1/2 of this value plus 1/2 of that value etc etc making it much more difficult to read and maintain than necessary.
      The preview lacks numerical stability, so to make things that don't Z-fight while you edit them, you end up peppering the code with Epsilon, which should be so unnecessary, as the order of operations should be able to provide the correct preview bias automatically. Ideally you would actually be viewing in the geometric CSG representation and wouldn't need a screenspace CSG, but you can't because SCAD has literal world's slowest geometric CSG.
      I would also like more expressive possibilities to create smooth and curvy surfaces, lofts and such. OpenSCAD's way often relies on Minkowski operator but it's so so insanely slow and also not expressive enough.
      I would almost consider contributing to solving most of these problems if not for the first two which i deem fundamental. On the other hand, i do find text based modelling fundamentally very appealing.
      OK so there's CADQuery and CascadeStudio, being BREP they seem promising as in they may be able to fix all of these issues in one shot. There's also a bunch of slightly less or more bad OpenSCAD clones. But i never get around to evaluate them. Maybe someone should do that for me. OpenSCAD is so well known and so much used because it was the first software of its ilk and was there when it was sorely needed, to spin up the very first RepRap machines. But perhaps in the past is where it should stay.

    Good news that Thingiverse is being updated.
    I also like using OpenSCAD to design parts if the geometry is not too complicated. I like being able to define all my variables at the beginning which makes it very easy to tweak dimensions. I have done a lot of programming over the years which may be why I am comfortable with a script based CAD application.

  • @wafflecart
    @wafflecart 8 місяців тому

    It’s good that they are making changes. I personally don’t like the font and overall bigger size of everything but do like the layout more. Problem I noticed though is they broke the description html/ markdown. If you try adding even a small image in the description it fills the maximum width and stretches it and the preview before publishing is nowhere near what it looks like. I suspect people with complex descriptions and such this has messed it up a bit.
