Proties (our Aussie name for these dags) do very well in the savanna areas of northern Oz. They don't like too much humidity, so coastal Queensland and Northern Territory is out. They're not smart but very curious. A Swiss Ball keeps a herd entertained for hours. At the back of the neck that joins to the frill can get a bit dirty. Use a long soft bristle brush. They love it. They'll arch their neck and chirp drowsily into nirvana as you gently brush them. And once a week a lucerne haystack is a nice treat. You don't even have to spread it. They just barrel into it, having a great time.

As a Queenslander, I have a Microraptor named Michael. These quad-winged buggers are highly loyal, social, shiny, and are almost as smart as small parrots. Would recommend an aviary though as they require lots of room to entertain themselves. I let Michael visit his girlfriend Michaela the days I'm away or when he's in need of a visit. Fun fact: Micro's where thought of as good luck in both there homeland of Asia, and in the middle-ages(I think it had something to do with the four wings.)

Oh, and would they really need a heated area? There's debate about non avian dinosaurs being cold blooded, and also, protoceratops were relativity big, their temperature could probably stay more or less constant throughout the day, also they could do sunbathes like crocs

Basking? no. I am on the warm blooded side. But Having an indoor heated area will stimulate them as it counterfeit their natural environment. It's probably not essential, but if you were breeding them, you'd definitely want to simulate their environment as much as possible.

i have a group of 8 individuals (2males, 5 females) in a 2.6 hectare, a meditteranean climate (25 degree celsius minimum) in a rocky and scrubland (i've planted cycas, fern and magnolia and there's some native trees and a lot of bushes) with a 2 pond of 60cm deep and 4-7meters square) and i can say that you underestimated how much they will eat and their determination to break throught fence
be carefull they like to headbutt sometime and can have strong personnality, a bit more "intelligent than a crocodile but it's maybe an impression because they are social and more active (and they can shew wood and fence when they want to for no reason) and i recommand that you provide enrichissment/toy for your animal so they are more relaxed and happy (trust me you don't want to have an angry protoceratops next to you), female and male can be agressive during matingseason and when they hve young, remember those are wild animals
the cost is nearly free..... if you manage to afford/find a time machine

It's all just guess work. I make a scale graphic and just resize it to find (What I think) would be a suitable size for both you, and the animal. It also depends on the animal itself. If I was covering a reptile that was relatively inactive, the enclosure size wouldn't need to be so big. But in this case protoceratops was was likely more active than a lizard like reptile, so a larger enclosure was more fitting. I also try come up a some sort of rule or equation to make it easier for the keeper to build a suitable enclosure.

Okay, but about the dietary conditions--what are the chances that the Protoceratops would become ill from eating modern day vegetables? We know so little about the extinct flora that once inhabited the Mongol-China terrain, let alone the dinosaur's diet of choice. Yeah, based on similar ecosystems it probably be better to stick towards its natural diet: consisting likely of long grasses, small shrubs, seeds, and flowers, and on good days you can award your pet with a bowl of cycads as a treat--and pitcher plants--that is if dinosaurs were able to eat and digest carnivorous plants.
